Magnetic anisotropy of a total of 213 independently oriented Tertiary rock samples from Pohang-Ulsan area has been studied. The sampled strata comprise basalts, tuffs and black shale, and range in age from Eocene to Miocene. The previous palaeomagnetic studies indicate that their magnetic carrier minerals are titanomagnetites. Among 23 sampled sites, 11 sites were found to preserve magnetic load foliation parallel to the bedding plane caused by the Iithostatic load of the overlying strata. Other 4 sites showed magnetic lineation indicating the flow direction of lava and tuffs. The remaining 8 sites revealed the magnetic tectonic foliation nearly vertical to the bedding plane. This magnetic foliation is interpreted to be generated by tectonic compression which acted nearly horizontally during the solidification stage of the strata. The compression directions deduced from the tectonic foliation of the 8 sites can be grouped into internally very consistent two group: a N-S trending one and the other WNW-ESE trending one. It is interpreted that the former N-S compression was associated with the N-S spreading of the East Sea(Sea of Japan) and the dextral strike-slip movement of the Yangsan-Ulsan fault system. The latter WNW-ESE compression is interpreted to represent the folding and reverse faulting activity in the Korean and Tsushima straits during middle/late Miocene times.
The origin for the charge disproportionation (CD) transition in polycrystalline $La_{1/3}Sr_{2/3}FeO_{2.96}$ was examined using X-ray diffraction and the external field $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ssbauer spectroscopy. In order to see how the external magnetic field affects the CD state above its transition temperature, an external magnetic field of up to 6 T was applied either parallel or perpendicular to the $\gamma-ray$ direction with the sample temperature fixed at 225 K, which was above the CD transition temperature. Without an external magnetic field, a completely paramagnetic singlet was obtained in the temperature range of the averaged valence state above the transition temperature, which was interpreted as coming from the average valence $Fe^{3.6+}$. In the longitudinal geometry, a magnetic Zeeman with its intensity ratio 3:0:1:1:0:3 is superimposed to the central singlet. In the transverse geometry, however, the central singlet disappears and only a magnetic component with its intensity ratio 3:4:1:1:4:3 emerges. The existence of a singlet is understood as an evidence of the fast electron-transfer among Fe ions. Since the singlet still exists under the magnetic field, the application of an external field has little effect on the conduction mechanism of hopping electrons.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is one of the field-responsive fluids that is of interest to many researchers due to its high yield stress value, which depends on the magnetic field strength. Similar to electrorheological (ER) fluid, the combination of working modes is one of the techniques to increase the performance of the fluids with limited focus on MR fluids. In this paper, a novel MR testing cell incorporated with valve, shear and squeeze operational modes is designed and constructed in order to investigate the behaviour of MR fluid in combined mode. The magnetic field distribution in the design concept was analyzed using finite element method in order to verify the effective areas of each mode have the acceptable range of flux density. The annular gap of valve and shear were fixed at 1 mm, while the squeeze gap between the parallel circular surfaces was varied up to 20 mm. Three different coil configurations, which were made up from 23 SWG copper wires were set up in the MR cell. The simulation results indicated that the magnetic field distributed in the squeeze gap was the highest among the other gaps with all coils were subjected to a constant applied current of 1 A. Moreover, the magnetic flux densities in all gaps were in a good range of magnitude based on the simulations that validated the proposed design concept. Hence, the 3D model of the MR testing cell was designed using Solidworks for manufacturing processes.
The plasmon behaviors in a superlattice of $GaAs/Al_xGa_{1-x}As$ multiple quantum wells with a half-parabolic confining potential due to different dielectric interfaces are studied under magnetic and electric fields perpendicular and parallel to the superlattice axis by using a previously published theoretical framework. From the density-density correlation functions by considering the intrasubband and the inter-subband transitions under the random phase approximation, we calculate the dispersion energies of the surface and the bulk states as functions of the composition of the multiple quantum well structure and of the magnetic field strength and the average electric field strength over the quantum well. The Raman intensities for various magnetic field strengths and average electric field strengths over the quantum well are also obtained as a function of the energy of the incoming light for these states.
This paper presents a two-paralleled 4 quadrant DC chopper type PWM power conversion circuit in order to generate a gradient magnetic field in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system. This power amplifier is connected in parallel with the conventional 4-quadrant DC chopper using IGBTs at their inputs/outputs to realize further high-power density, high speed current tracking control, and to get a low switching ripple amplitude in a controlled current in the Gradient Coils (GCs). Moreover, the power conversion circuit has to realize quick rise/fall response characteristics in proportion to various target currents in GCs. It is proposed in this paper that a unique control scheme can achieve the above objective. DSP-based control systems realize a high control facility and accuracy. It is proved that the new control system will greatly enlarge the diagnostic target and improve the image quality of MRI.

In this paper, we implemented and analyzed a wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a CSPR topology. CSPR refers to constant current source, series resonance circuit topology of a transmitting coil, parallel resonance circuit topology of a receiving coil, and pure resistive loading. The transmitting coil is coupled by a magnetic field to the receiving coil without wire. Although the electromotive force (emf) is small (about 4.5V), the voltage on load resistor is 148V, because a parallel resonance scheme was adopted for the receiving coil. The implemented WPT system is designed to be able to transfer up to 1 kW power and can operate a LED TV. Before the implementation, the EMF reduction mechanism based on the use of ferrite and a metal shield box was confirmed by an EM simulation and we found that the EMF can be suppressed dramatically by using this shield. The operating frequency of the implemented WPT system is 30.7kHz and the air gap between two coils is 150mm. The power transferred to the load resistor is 147W and the real power transfer efficiency is 66.4 %.
We report a small-scale EUV bright loop associated with the evolution of the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere. Our analysis was carried out by using the high spatial resolution data taken with InfraRed Imaging Magnetograph (IRIM) and the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS). As a result, an extremely narrow dark lane of the intense horizontal magnetic field (width ~ 300 km) is detected parallel to the boundary of the magnetic pore, which is one of the footpoints of the small-scale bright coronal loop. We find that the variation of the net linear polarization inside the dark lane is closely related to the intensity variations of the coronal loop. Based on our results, we suggest that small-scale atmospheric heating such as bright coronal loop seen above the complex pore group may be strongly affected by the evolution of the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere. This is a nice example of solar atmospheric heatings associated with the fine-scale magnetic discontinuity in the photosphere.

We report on the fabrication and measurement results of the electrical transport properties of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) weak links, made of PbIn superconductor and Au metal. The maximum supercurrent reaches up to ${\sim}6{\mu}A$ at T = 2.3 K and the supercurrent persists even at T = 4.7 K. Magnetic field dependence of the critical current is consistent with a theoretical fit using the narrow junction model. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) was also fabricated using two PbIn-Au-PbIn junctions connected in parallel. Under perpendicular magnetic field, we clearly observed periodic oscillations of dV/dI with a period of magnetic flux quantum threading into the supercurrent loop of the SQUID. Our fabrication methods would provide an easy and simple way to explore the superconducting proximity effects without ultra-low-temperature cryostats.
Acquisition of thermoremanent magnetization follows a Boltzman statistics, as such long reaction time in a slowly cooled environment allows more chance to align individual magnetic particles parallel to the external magnetic field. Hence it has been proposed that the slowly cooled rocks often acquire stronger magnetization than the rapidly cooled ones. Such a proposition has been experimentally validated to be true for the fine-grained magnetite- or titanomagnetite bearing basaltic rocks collected from the mid-ocean ridges. However, the effect of cooling-rate on the remanence intensity appears to be insignificant for nominal grain ranges.

Particle-in-cell method which blends Eulerian grids and Lagrangian particle is utilized to solve simplified hall-effect thruster. Since this study individually tracks not only neutrons and ions but also electrons, message passing interface(mpi) scheme is adopted for parallel computer cluster. Helical movement of an electron cloud in constant magnetic field is validated comparing with an exact solution. A plasma in radial magnetic field and axial electric field in a reaction cylinder is established. Electrons do double helix movement and are well anchored in a cylinder. Ionization of neutrons by impact with high-speed electrons generates ion particles. They are accelerated by axial electric field, which forms a plume of a plasma-effect thruster.
