Parallel LDPC Decoding on a Heterogeneous Platform using OpenCL

  • Modern mobile devices are equipped with various accelerated processing units to handle computationally intensive applications; therefore, Open Computing Language (OpenCL) has been proposed to fully take advantage of the computational power in heterogeneous systems. This article introduces a parallel software decoder of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes on an embedded heterogeneous platform using an OpenCL framework. The LDPC code is one of the most popular and strongest error correcting codes for mobile communication systems. Each step of LDPC decoding has different parallelization characteristics. In the proposed LDPC decoder, steps suitable for task-level parallelization are executed on the multi-core central processing unit (CPU), and steps suitable for data-level parallelization are processed by the graphics processing unit (GPU). To improve the performance of OpenCL kernels for LDPC decoding operations, explicit thread scheduling, vectorization, and effective data transfer techniques are applied. The proposed LDPC decoder achieves high performance and high power efficiency by using heterogeneous multi-core processors on a unified computing framework.

경사진 평행평판 내 고 점성유체의 혼합대류 열전달 특성 및 가시화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Visualization and Characteristics of Mixed Convection between Inclined Parallel Plates Filled with High Viscous Fluid)

  • Experiment and numerical calculation have been peformed to investigate mixed convection heat transfer between inclined parallel plates. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualizing and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. The governing equations are discretized using the finite volume method. The results are presented for the Reynolds number ranges from 0.004 to 0.062, the angle of inclination, ${\Theta}$, from 0 to 45 degree and Prandtl number of the high viscosity fluid is 909. The results show velocity, temperature and mean Nusselt numbers distributions. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection between inclined parallel plates is shown at $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\Theta}<30^{\circ}$, Re<0.062, and the flow pattern can be classified into three patterns which depend on Reynolds number and the angle of inclination. The minimum Nusselt numbers occur at Re=0.05 regardless of the angle of inclination.

A Resonant Characteristics Analysis and Suppression Strategy for Multiple Parallel Grid-connected Inverters with LCL Filter

  • Multiple parallel inverters have multiple resonant frequencies that are influenced by many factors. This often results in stability and power quality problems. This paper develops a multiple input multiple output model of grid-connected inverter systems using a closed-loop transfer function. The influence factors of the resonant characteristics are analyzed with the developed model. The analysis results show that the resonant frequency is closely related to the number, type and composition ratio of the parallel inverters. To suppress resonance, a scheme based on virtual impedance is presented, where the virtual impedance is emulated in the vicinity of the resonance frequency. The proposed scheme needs one inverter with virtual impedance control, which reduces the design complexity of the other inverter controllers. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out on two single phase converter-based setups. The results validate the correctness of the model, the analytical results and the resonant suppressing scheme.

삼중효용 LiBr/물 흡수식 냉방기의 사이클 시뮬레이션 (Cycle simulation of a triple effect LiBr/water absorption chiller)

  • Basic design of a 50USRT(175㎾) triple effect absorption chiller driven by hot gas has been carried out for both parallel and series flow cycles. Parallel flow cycle showed higher COP, however, the temperature in the generator was also higher than that in series flow cycle. Dynamic operation behavior of a parallel flow system at off-design conditions, such as the change in heat transfer medium temperature or the construction change of the system components, has been investigated in detail. It was found that the cooling capacity was seriously decreased by reducing hot gas flow rate and UA-value in the high temperature generator. However, the system COP was improved, because thermal load in the system components was reduced. The COP and the cooling capacity was found to be improved as cooling water temperature decreased or chilled water temperature increased. The optimum ratio of solution distribution could be suggested by considering the COP, the cooling capacity and the highest temperature in the system, which is critical for corrosion.

  • Recently, Open Computing Language (OpenCL) has been proposed to provide a framework that supports heterogeneous computing platforms. By using an OpenCL framework, digital communication systems can support various protocols in a unified computing environment to achieve both high portability and high performance.   • It was investigated thermal performances on two array types of a serial circulation and a two-way parallel circulation for six water-cooled cold plates covered with non-metallic material (polycarbonate, PC) to reduce weight of the cooling devices for humanoid robot cooling. Six cold plates attached on $10{\times}10\;mm^2$ copper base : $0.5{\times}0.5\;mm^2$ pin-finned surfaces of 1.5 mm high with 0.5 mm array spacing, was mounted on six copper heating blocks with isothermal conditions of $50{\sim}90^{\circ}C$, respectively. In order to compare thermal characteristics according to two circulation types, the surface temperatures of heating blocks and the cooling water temperatures at inlets and outlets of cold plates were measured. From the results, it was found that a two-way parallel circulation was better performance than a serial circulation in terms of total thermal resistance, total heat transfer rate, and surface temperature rises from $1^{st}$ heating block to last one for six multiple cold plates.

  • 본 논문은 고속의 병렬 패킷 여과를 위한 다중프로세서 시스템이 가지는 단일 버퍼에서 단일 버퍼의 판독을 위한 다중프로세서 간의 경합을 중재하기 위한 효율적인 단일 버퍼 관리 방안을 제안하고 이를 실제의 다중 프로세서 시스템에 적용하여 실험함으로써 제안한 방안이 납득할 만한 성능을 제공함을 증명하였다. 병렬 패킷 여과시스템으로는 처리의 고속화를 위하여 패킷 여과규칙을 다중의 프로세서에 걸쳐 분산 처리하는 경우를 모델로 정하였다. 실제의 실험은 다중 프로세서를 가지는 네트워크 프로세서에서 이루어졌으며 100Mbps 의 통신망을 배경으로 하였다. 제안한 방안의 성능을 고찰하기 위하여 프로세서 수의 변화 및 여과 규칙의 처리 시간의 변화 등에 따르는 실제 패킷 전송률을 측정하였다.

Numerical Analysis of the Effect of a Three-Dimensional Baffle Structure with Variable Cross-Section on the Parallel Flow Field Performance of PEMFC

  • In this study, a 3D model of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell is established, and a new 3D baffle structure is designed, which is combined with the parallel flow field and then optimized by numerical simulation methods. The number of baffles and the cross-sectional trapezoidal base angle are taken as the main variables, and their impacts on the performance indexes of the cathode side are analyzed. The results show that the 3D baffle can facilitate the convection and diffusion mass transfer of reactants, improve the uniformity of oxygen distribution, enhance the drainage capacity, and make the cell performance superior; however, too small angle will lead to excessive local convective mass flux, resulting in the decrease of the overall uniformity of oxygen distribution and lowering the cell performance. Among them, the optimal number of baffles and angle are 9 and 58°, respectively, which improves the net output power density by 10.8% than conventional flow field.

  • Inductively coupled plasma having the high-density is often used for high productivity in the plasma processing. In large area processing, the plasma can be generated by using the multi-pole connected in parallel. However, in case of this, the power cannot transfer to plasma uniformly. To address the problem, we studied the mechanism of inductively coupled plasma connected in parallel by using transformer model. We also studied about the change of the plasma parameters over the time through the power balance equation and particle balance equation.

Improved mevinolic acid (MA) production by the immobilized cells, and the establishment of on-line measurement system for fermentation parameters using vent gas analyzer

  • Mevinolic acid (MA), a secondary metabolite produced by a filamentous fungus Aspergillus terreus, is acidic form of lovastatin which has been identified as a powerful cholesterol-lowering agent in humans. When immobilized cell culture was performed, MA production was about 5.3-fold higher than the parallel suspended cell culture. Although the immobilized cells proliferated slowly during exponential in comparison with the suspended cells, oxygen uptake rate and oxygen mass transfer coefficient of the immobilized cell culture were about 1.3- and 2.5- fold higher respectively than those of the parallel suspended cell culture. From these results, it was concluded that MA biosynthesis was closely dependent on the cell growth rate, morphology and oxygen availability.
