  • Zeigler's DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification) formalism supports formal specification of discrete event systems in a hierarchical , modular manner. Associated are hierarchical, distributed simulation algorithms, called abstract simulators, which interpret dynamics of DEVS models. This paper deals with performance evaluation of P-DEVSIM ++, a parallel simulation environment which implements the DEVS formalism and associated simulation algorithms in a parallel environment. Performance simulator has been developed and used to experiment models of parallel simulation executions in different conditions. The experimental result shows that simulation time depends on both the number of processors in the parallel system and the communication overheads among such processors.

  • Software simulations have been widely used for the design and application development of a wireless sensor network that is an infrastructure of ubiquitous computing. In this study, we develop a sensor network simulator that can verify the behavior of sensor network applications, estimate execution time and power consumption, and simulate a large-scale sensor network. To implement the simulator, we use an instruction-level parallel discrete-event simulation method. Instruction-level simulation uses executable images loaded into a real sensor board as workload, such that it results in the high degree of details. Parallel simulation makes simulation of a large-scale sensor network possible by distributing workload into multiple computers. The simulator can predict the amount of power consumption based on operating time of modules in a sensor node and counting the number of executed instructions by kind. Also it can simulate ubiquitous applications with various scenarios and debug programs. Instruction traces used as workload for simulations are executable images produced by the cross-compiler for ATmega128L microcontroller.

  • For a sophisticated humanoid that explores and learns its environment and interacts with humans, anthropomorphic physical behavior is much desired. The human vision system orients each eye with three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) in the directions of horizontal, vertical and torsional axes. Thus, in order to accurately replicate human vision system, it is imperative to have a simulator with 3-DOF end-effector. We present a 3-DOF anthropomorphic oculomotor system that reproduces realistic human eye movements for human-sized humanoid applications. The parallel link architecture of the oculomotor system is sized and designed to match the performance capabilities of the human vision. In this paper, a biologically-inspired mechanical design and the structural kinematics of the prototype are described in detail. The motility of the prototype in each axis of rotation was replicated through computer simulation, while performance tests comparable to human eye movements were recorded.

Developing a Simulator of the Capture Process in Towed Fishing Gears by Chaotic Fish Behavior Model and Parallel Computing

  • A fishing simulator for towed fishing gear was investigated in order to mimic the fish behavior in capture process and investigate fishing selectivity. A fish behavior model using a psycho-hydraulic wheel activated by stimuli is established to introduce Lorenz chaos equations and a neural network system and to generate the components of realistic fish capture processes. The fish positions within the specified gear geometry are calculated from normalized intensities of the stimuli of the fishing gear components or neighboring fish and then these are related to the sensitivities and the abilities of the fish. This study is applied to four different towed gears i.e. a bottom trawl, a midwater trawl, a two-boat seine, and an anchovy boat seine and for 17 fish species as mainly caught. The Alpha cluster computer system and Fortran MPI (Message-Passing Interface) parallel programming were used for rapid calculation and mass data processing in this chaotic behavior model. The results of the simulation can be represented as animation of fish movements in relation to fishing gear using Open-GL and C graphic programming and catch data as well as selectivity analysis. The results of this simulator mimicked closely the field studies of the same gears and can therefore be used in further study of fishing gear design, predicting selectivity and indoor training systems.

  • We designed a DSP core simulator with C language, that is able to simulate 5-stage pipelined DSP core, named YS-DSP. It can emulate all 5 stage pipelines in the DSP core. It can also emulate memory access, exception processing, and DSP parallel processing. Each pipeline stage is implemented by combination of one or more functions to process parts of each stage. After modeling and validating the simulator, we can use it to verify and to complement the DSP core HDL model and to enhance its performance.

  • As the life cycle of the vehicle become shorter, the method that reduce the development time of new model become more important. In this reason, the development of the simulator that provides similar environment with the actual vehicle road characteristics is increasing. In this paper, the multi-axis simulator is designed and analyzed by kinematic method. The simulator has a function simulating the 3 load elements; vertical, longitudinal, and lateral force respectively and simultaneously. The result of this paper can be used for developing the multi-axis simulator linkage.

Performance Analysis of Hierarchical Routing Protocols for Sensor Network (센서 네트워크를 위한 계층적 라우팅 프로토콜의 성능 분석)

  • In this study, we use a parallel simulator PASENS(Parallel SEnsor Network Simulator) to predict power consumption and data reception rate of the hierarchical routing protocols for sensor network - LEACH (Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy), TL-LEACH (Two Level Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy), M-LEACH (Multi hop Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) and LEACH-C (LEACH-Centralized). According to simulation results, M-LEACH routing protocol shows the highest data reception rate for the wider area, since more sensor nodes are involved in the data transmission. And LEACH-C routing protocol, where the sink node considers the entire node's residual energy and location to determine the cluster head, results in the most efficient energy consumption and in the narrow area needed long life of sensor network.

Development of High Performance Massively Parallel Processing Simulator for Semiconductor Etching Process (건식 식각 공정을 위한 초고속 병렬 연산 시뮬레이터 개발)

  • This paper report the implementation results of Monte Carlo numerical calculation for ion distributions in plasma dry etching chamber and of the surface evolution simulator using cell removal method for topographical evolution of the surface exposed to etching ion. The energy and angular distributions of ion across the plasma sheath were calculated by MC(Monte Carlo) algorithm. High performance MPP(Massively Parallel Processing) algorithm developed in this paper enables efficient parallel and distributed simulation with an efficiency of more than 95% and speedup of 16 with 16 processors. Parallelization of surface evolution simulator based on cell removal method reduces simulation time dramatically to 15 minutes and increases capability of simulation required enormous memory size of 600Mb.

  • A vehicle driving simulator is a virtual reality device which a human being feels as if the one drives a vehicle actually. Driving Operation System acts as an interface between a driver and a driving simulator. This paper suggests the driving operation system for a driving simulator. This system consists of a controller, DC geared motor, MR brake, rotary encoders, steeping motor and bevel gear box. Reaction force and torque on the steering system were made by DC_Motor and MR_Brake. Reaction force and torque on the steering system were compare between real car and a driving simulator. The controller based on the 80C196KC micro processor that manage and transfer signal.
