Compared to metal-to-metal tribology, polymer tribology presents further complexity as it is more prone to be influenced by operating conditions. Over the past two decades, progress in the field of wear of polymers has led to the establishment of more refined wear mechanisms. The current paper establishes the link between different load parameters and the wear rate of polymers, based on experimental investigations. A pin-on-plate reciprocating tribometer was used to examine the wear behaviour of polyamide sliding against a steel counterface, under constant and fluctuating loads, in dry conditions. In addition, the influence of controlled imperfections in the polymer surface upon its wear rate were examined, under cyclic and steady loading, in order to better understand surface fatigue wear of polymers. The imposed imperfections consisted of vertical artificial deep crack (slit) perpendicular or parallel to the direction of sliding. The study concludes with the followings findings; in general, wear of polymers shows a significant tendency to the type of applied load. Under cyclic loads, polymers show an increase in wear rate compared to those tested under static loads. Such increase was found to increase with the increase in cyclic load frequency. It is also demonstrated that surface cracks results in higher wear rates, particularly under cyclic loads.
Civil infrastructure, in both its construction and maintenance, represents the largest societal investment in this country, outside of the health care industry. Despite being the lifeline of US commerce, civil infrastructure has scarcely benefited from the latest sensor technological advances. Our future should focus on harnessing these technologies to enhance the robustness, longevity and economic viability of this vast, societal investment, in light of inherent uncertainties and their exposure to service and even extreme loadings. One of the principal means of insuring the robustness and longevity of infrastructure is to strategically deploy smart sensors in them. Therefore, the objective is to develop novel, durable, smart sensors that are especially applicable to major infrastructure and the facilities to validate their reliability and long-term functionality. In some cases, this implies the development of new sensing elements themselves, while in other cases involves innovative packaging and use of existing sensor technologies. In either case, a parallel focus will be the integration and networking of these smart sensing elements for reliable data acquisition, transmission, and fusion, within a decision-making framework targeting efficient management and maintenance of infrastructure systems. In this paper, prudent and viable sensor and health monitoring technologies have been developed and used in several large structural systems. Discussion will also include several practical bridge health monitoring applications including their design, construction, and operation of the systems.
Most of roadway tunnels have been constructed in the form of parallel twin tunnel in Korea. If parallel twin tunnel does not have a sufficient separation distance between tunnels, the problem of tunnel stability can occur. Generally, it is reported that tunnels are not influenced by each other when a center distance between tunnels is two times longer than tunnel diameter under the complete elastic ground and five times under the soft ground. In this study, the scaled model tests of closely-spaced parallel twin tunnel using homogeneous material are performed and induced displacements are measured around the tunnel openings during excavation. The influence of separation distance between tunnels on the behavior of closely-spaced tunnel is investigated. The experimental results are expressed by the induced displacement vector and progress of crack during construction and at failure. The results show that based on the analysis of induced displacement at the crown during construction, the additional displacement of the preceding tunnel induced by the excavation of following tunnel decreases as the separation distance between twin tunnel increases until the center to center distance is two times of tunnel diameter. Beyond this point, however, the additional displacement has become stabilized.

Rock bridge in rock masses can be considered as one of several types of opening-mode fractures, and also it has been known to have a great influence on the stability of structures in rock mats. In the beginning of researching a rock bridge it used to be studied only in characteristics of its behavior, as considering resistance of material itself. However the distribution pattern of rock bridges, which can affect the stability of rock structures, is currently researched with a fracture mechanical approach in numerical studies. For investigating the effect of rock bridges on the development pattern of hydraulic fractures, the author analyzed numerically the stress state transition in rock bridges and their phenomena with a different pattern of the rock bridge distributons. From the numerical studies, a two-crack configuration could be defined to be representative of the most critical conditions for rock bridges, only when cracks are systematic and same in their length and angle. Moreover, coalescence stresses and onset of propagation stresses could be known to increase with decreasing s/L ratio or increasing d/L ratio. The effect of pre-existing crack on hydraulic fracturing was studied also in numerical models. Different to the simple hydraulic fracturing modeling in which the fractures propagated exactly parallel to the maximum remote stress, the hydraulic fractures with pre-existing cracks dial not propagate parallel to the maximum remote stress direction. These are representative of the tendency to change the hydraulic fractures direction because of the existence of pre-existing crack. Therefore s/L, d/L ratios will be identical as a function effective on hydraulic fractures propagation, that is, the $K_{I}$ vague increase with decreasing s/L ratio or increasing d/L ratio and its magnification from onset to propagation increases with decreasing s/L ratio. The scanline is a commonly used method to estimate the fracture distribution on outcrops. The data obtained from the scanline method can be applied to the evaluation of stress field in rock mass.s.

A study has been made to investigate the acoustic emission(AE) behavior during the tensile and fracture tests of an Al-Li 8090 alloy, and to correlate it with the deformation mechanisms as a function of microstructure and plate orientation. Mechanical tests and AE measurements were conducted on the specimens with different microstructures (the ${\delta}'$ phase dominant microstructure and the $S'+{\delta}'$ microstructure) and with different orientations (L and ST). In the ${\delta}'$ structure, continuous emissions were produced in both the L and ST oriented specimens, while only the burst emissions were observed to occur in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. It was inferred from the above results that continuous type emissions were mainly attributed to the shearing of coherent ${\delta}'$ precipitates in the ${\delta}'$ structure, while the burst type emissions were produced due to the shearing or microcracking of incoherent S' phase in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. As to the effect of plate orientation, the ST oriented specimens showed more burst emissions than the LT oriented ones. A large number of burst emissions produced in the ST specimen were presumably due to the rapid crack propagation along the intergranular boundary located parallel to the crack propagation direction.
As the intensity of urban underground space development increases, more and more tunnels are planned and constructed, and sometimes it is inevitable to encounter situations where tunnels have to underpass the river embankments. Most previous studies involved tunnels passing river embankments perpendicularly or with large intersection angle. In this study, a project case where two EPB shield tunnels with 8.82 m diameter run parallelly underneath a river embankment was reported. The parallel length is 380 m and tunnel were mainly buried in the moderate / slightly weathered clastic rock layer. The field monitoring result was presented and discussed. Three-dimensional back-analysis were then carried out to gain a better understanding the interaction mechanisms between shield tunnel and embankment and further to predict the ultimate settlement of embankment due to twin-tunnel excavation. Parametrical studies considering effect of tunnel face pressure, tail grouting pressure and volume loss were also conducted. The measured embankment settlement after the single tunnel excavation was 4.53 mm ~ 7.43 mm. Neither new crack on the pavement or cavity under the roadbed was observed. It is found that the more degree of weathering of the rock around the tunnel, the greater the embankment settlement and wider the settlement trough. Besides, the latter tunnel excavation might cause larger deformation than the former tunnel excavation if the mobilized plastic zone overlapped. With given geometry and stratigraphic condition in this study, the safety or serviceability of the river embankment would hardly be affected since the ultimate settlement of the embankment after the twin-tunnel excavation is within the allowable limit. Reasonable tunnel face pressure and tail grouting pressure can to some extent suppress the settlement of the embankment. The recommended tunnel face pressure and tail grouting pressure are 300 kPa and 550 kPa in this study, respectively. However, the volume loss plays the crucial role in the tunnel-embankment interaction. Controlling and compensating the tunneling induced volume loss is the most effective measure for river embankment protection. Additionally, reinforcing the embankment with cement mixing pile in advance is an alternative option in case the predicted settlement exceeds allowable limit.

To investigate the effect of implant types and bone resorption on the fracture characteristics. 4 types of Osstem$^{(R)}$Implant were chosen and classified into external parallel, internal parallel, external taper, internal taper groups. Finite elements analysis was conducted with ANSYS Multi Physics software. Fatigue fracture test was performed by connecting the mold to the dynamic load fatigue testing machine with maximum load of 600N and minimum load of 60N. The entire fatigue test was performed with frequency of 14Hz and fractured specimens were observed with Hitachi S-3000 H scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In the fatigue test of 2 mm exposed implants group, Tapered type and external connected type had higher fatigue life. 2. In the fatigue test of 4 mm exposed implants group, Parallel type and external connected types had higher fatigue life. 3. The fracture patterns of all 4 mm exposed implant system appeared transversely near the dead space of the fixture. With a exposing level of 2 mm, all internally connected implant systems were fractured transversely at the platform of fixture facing the abutment. but externally connected ones were fractured at the fillet of abutment body and hexa of fixture or near the dead space of the fixture. 4. Many fatigue striations were observed near the crack initiation and propagation sites. The cleavage with facet or dimple fractures appeared at the final fracture sites. 5. Effective stress of buccal site with compressive stress is higher than that of lingual site with tensile stress, and effective stress acting on the fixture is higher than that of the abutment screw. Also, maximum effective stress acting on the parallel type fixtures is higher. It is careful to use the internal type implant system in posterior area.
A recently developed three dimensional concrete law is used for the analysis of concrete specimens and reinforced concrete columns subjected to different load patterns. The hypoelastic, orthotropic concrete constitutive model includes coupling between the deviatoric and volumetric stresses, works with both proportional and non-proportional loads and is implemented as a strain driven module. The FE implementation is based on the smeared crack approach with rotating cracks parallel to the principal strain directions. The concrete model is validated through correlated studies with: (a) experimental tests on confined concrete cylinders; (b) experimental results on three reinforced concrete columns tested at the University of California, San Diego. The correlations are overall very good, and the FE responses capture all the main phenomena observed in the experimental tests.

Developed is a nonlinear fracture theory which can model the complex fracture behavior of concrete. This theory is based on the nonlinear behavior due to progressive microcracking and strain-softening in the fracture process zone of concrete cracks. The simplified realistic fracture model which preserves the same fracture energy for the different fracture process zone widths is also derived. By modeling fracture through stress-strain behavior, the effect of compressive stresses parallel to the crack plane can be easily taken into account. The comparisons of the present theory with valuable fracture test data available in the literature show good agreements, and the existing linear theory exhibits in many cases large deviations from the actual test results. A simple approximate formula for the fracture energy of concrete which should, be necessary for the fracture analysis of concrete structures is derived. Finally, the application of fracture theory to reinforced concrete and the necessity of further research are discussed.
