  • CGI is gaining popularity in applications that require either greater strength, or lower weight than cast iron. Recently, compacted graphite iron has been used for diesel engine blocks, turbo housings and exhaust manifolds. This paper were assessed acoustic emission characteristics according to the mechanical properties change of degraded CGI340 during 1-24 hours at 873~1173 K. In results of pencil lead fracture test, the dominant frequency and the velocity of base metal were 97 kHz and 5490 m/sec, respectively. The base metal in a tensile test was obtained relatively high dominant frequency. However, the heat treated materials, the longer the heat treatment time, the higher the heat treatment temperature, were obtained in the area of lower frequencies. This phenomenon appears by long-term use.

  • The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how number sense performance of sixth graders was and what every character of five components of number sense possessed by sixth graders was. For the this purpose, Two kinds of studies were conducted : a descriptive study by pencil-and-paper tests(Basic Test, Number Sense Test) and a clinical study by interviews. The conclusions drawn from the results obtained in the this study were as follows : First, students were highly scored in Basic Test but not highly scored equally in Number Sense Test. Second, students hardly used the benchmarks and lacked consideration of the reasonableness about computation results. Interview results were that students' notion about the meaning, and the greater - than and less - than relations for fractions was weak and students tended to not use number sense but apply standard algorithm and compute numbers in the question without thinking.

  • Two primary objectives of this study were to determine important personal factors in performing cognitive distance mapping, and to understand how human's cognitive distance mapping capabilities were influenced by reference and subjects' locations using Global Positioning System (GPS). Undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Kansas, USA were interviewed and surveyed throughout the campus area giving them a paper-and-pencil test. Study results showed that females had more accurate cognitive mapping capability than males regardless of ethnic background and academic levels. Generally, subjects with longer affiliation with the university, higher ages and academic levels had less variability in their mapping accuracy. Subjects tended to more accurately map the target locations closer to the reference points than those located farther away, and subjects who were closer to a reference point performed their distance mapping better than those farther away. A correlation analysis reported that male subjects used reference-to-target and subject-to-reference distances more sensitively than females to estimate the locations of the targets. This result indicates that males might have used the reference point-based map scale more strenuously than females.

  • Almost every children are naturally non competitive, so they have test anxiety. Because grading in paper-pencil tests is related to competition with their friends. Intense competition should not be a part of the classroom environment. This study intends to reflect current standardized tests(summative evaluations) in an elementary school mathematics(2008) and reconstructed it's problem. Teachers should provide students with rich situational problem-solving opportunities. Therefore we conclude "summative evaluation are consisted of some large problem type which contain some subproblems, or from easy(simple) problem with relation to difficult problem)".

  • Recently, by the popularization of computers and the development of many kinds of information transmission software, the living pattern in business offices and in home-life have changed rapidly. Because of the great progression of today's science technology, the influence of social education on the children is larger than that of the traditional school.. By a rapid change in the social atmosphere, there are some people who insist the traditional school education system is of no use any more. There have been many calls for reform of traditional schooling and in particular there has been major rethinking of school mathematics. The initial demand for change in elementary school mathematics is because of the poor achievement of students. There are even more compelling reasons for change. For example today's science technology society requires a different mathematical literacy for its citizens than that of the past. The importance of problem-solving based on interest and progress is more important than just paper-pencil computation in elementary schools. And also the increasing information wave of today's society demands that the school accept the long-distance education which could not be imagined in the past. Taking account of this variety, school education in the future should willingly introduce and apply the open education system to keep pace with today's society. To accept society demands actively, today's schools are going to accept and apply the idea of the open education. In this viewpoint, the purpose of the paper is to analyze the causes of under-achievement in mathematics teaming, the directions of school mathematics education, the system of textbooks and the problems of teaching-learning programs and paper-pencil test.

  • The objective of this research is to develop real-time failure detection techniques for damage assessment of composite materials using optical fiber sensors. Signals from matrix cracking or fiber fracture in composite laminates are treated by signal processing unit in real-time. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) to determine the time of occurrence of failure. In order to verify the performance of the optical fiber sensor for stress wave detection, we performed pencil break test with EFPI sensor and compared it with that of PZT. The EFPI sensor was embedded in composite beam to sense the failure signals and a tensile test was performed. The signals of the fiber optic sensor when damage occurred were characterized using STFT and wavelet transform. Failure detection system detected the moment of failure accurately and showed good sensitivity with the infinitesimal failure signal.

  • The paper-and-pencil multiplce choise test has been widely used to identify gifted and talented student in Korea. Such test have several drawbacks; such~a s not being able to assess creative problem solving abilities and high level thinking abilities which are important characteristics of gifted students. The Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) developed a performance assessment which challenged traditional methods of identification. The 5-day summer camp was held to select gifted students for the Korean Minjok Leadership Academy. 211 students were evaluated in the aspects of creative problem solving abilities, high level thinking abilities, task commitments, and cooperativeness with various performance tasks, such as essay tests, conversations, oral examinations, computer simulations, puzzles, experiments, group discussions, debates, research reports, and games. As a result, it was found that there were several limitations of the performance assessment in terms of low reliability, requiring high costs and many professionals, and taking long times and large spaces. Expanding and continuing research should follow in order for a performance assessment to use widely as an identification methods because it assesses 'true' abilities of each individual student. follow in order for a performance assessment to use widely as an identification methods because it assesses 'true' abilities of each individual student.

  • The pilot aptitude test so far has been conducted with a dichotomous concept of cognitive factor and non-cognitive factor, so it was not easy to explain concrete factors about pilot aptitude. Therefore, an integrated approach is needed to construct pilot aptitude test including all factors that can predict pilot aptitude. In previous study, we developed questionnaire items for the Pilot Aptitude Personality Test(PAPT) which can predict the flight training achievement through personality and personal characteristics. And those items were categorized as personality, cognition, and motivation factors. The flight training grades were correlated with all the test factors of the items, and the cognitive factors were high. As a result of the regression analysis, the total score of the three factors together accounted for 16% of the flight training grades. The results of the ANOVA showed that the cognition factors and motivation factors had significant effects on the completion of the flight training. The factors of PAPT predicted not only the completion of the flight training but also the flight performance. This is because the existing paper-pencil pilot aptitude test can only discriminate the flight training completion status. This is also a result of the fact that the introductory flight training consists of various factors including not only basic cognition but also personality and motivation.

  • In this study, students' multiplication expression method according to visual model was analyzed through paper test and eye tracking test. As a result of the paper-pencil test, students were presented with multiplication formula. In the group model (number of individual pieces in a group) ${\times}$ (number of group) in the array model (column) ${\times}$ (row), but in the array model, the proportion of students who answered the multiplication formula in the (row) ${\times}$ (column). From these results, we derived the appropriate model presentation method for multiplication instruction and the multiplication expression method for visual model.

  • This study's aim was to confirm that pseudoneglect affects visual attention through car laterality, using a driving simulator with either bisection or quadrisection strategies being applied to road usage. On the pencil and paper tests, the left quadrisection and bisection marks deviated significantly to the left. While driving, the car was significantly lateralized to the right of the lane regardless of conditions. However, in terms of relative laterality, the biggest left laterality occurred on roads 1(bisection), while the smallest left laterality occurred on roads 2 (right quadrisection). Thus, the effect of pseudoneglect was demonstrated in both the pencil and paper tests and the driving simulation task. Also, roads 2 and 4, which were driven on the right side of the lane, showed a tendency for drivers to avoid the centerline, as this was the expected cause of right laterality. This study demonstrated that the pseudoneglect phenomenon can occur in a routine driving task.
