Actually, about 45% of total costs for wastewater treatment in a papermaking mill is spent for sludge disposal and the cost of chemicals used to improve the dewaterability of sludge takes much part of it. In order to reduce sludge disposal cost and to improve the efficiency of sludge treatment, it is necessary to minimize the amount of water contained within the sludge and hence to improve the dewaterability of the sludge. The objective of this study was to elucidate the way of improving the dewaterability of sludge. Three types of wastewater from a tissue paper mill, a printing paper mill and a newsprint mill were used and two types of high molecular weight flocculants (anionic PAM and cationic PAM) were used to treat the wastewater. Dewaterability of sludge was evaluated by measuring floc strength.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the treatment efficiency of paper-mill wastewater using pure oxygen activated sludge process. Effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading on process performance and kinetics were investigated. The raw paper-mill wastewater(BOD concentration ${\leq}500mg/L$) and the effluent from dissolved air flotation(DAF) treatment(BOD concentration ${\geq}500mg/L$) were used as influent for pure oxygen activated sludge process. Average BOD removal efficiencies were above 89.3% under 6hours or longer of HRT, while under 3hours of HRT they decreased to about 82%. With the effluent from DAF process, the half saturation constants($K_S$) and the maximum specific substrate removal rate($K_{max}$) were 85 mg/L and 2.25 L/day, respectively. However, with the raw paper-mill wastewater, both $K_S$ and $K_{max}$ increased to 156 mg/L and 3.84 L/day, respectively. The microbial yield coefficient(Y) and the decay coefficient($K_d$) were 0.46 gVSS/gBOD and 0.03 L/day, respectively, with effluent from DAF process. While, Y and $K_d$ were 0.24 gVSS/gBOD and 0.035 L/day, respectively, with the raw paper-mill wastewater.
To apply paper mill sludges to soil as fertilizer, paper mill sludges were investigated to predict suitability and maleficence for soil. Newspaper and Printed Paper sludge were analyzed by IC (Ion Chromatography) and ICP-OES (Induced Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer). As a results, harmful materials in two types of sludges were below standard by notified Ministy of Environment (ME). Also ionic substances causing the water pollution in sludges were less than the standard value by notified ME. Thus sludges from newspaper and printed paper is presumed that there are no water pollution and soil contamination.
To find the latent effect of paper mill sludges (PMS) with and without alum, and alum paper mill sludge compost(PMSC) on aluminum toxicity of crops, the pH buffer capacity and the acidification resistance index (ARI) for PMSs and PMSC were investigated, comparing to upland soil. Buffer capacities of PMS with and without alum, and PMSC were significantly higher than $2.5cmol^+kg^{-1}$ of check soil as 137, 250, and $147cmol^+kg^{-1}$, respectively. Owing to such high buffer capacity of PMS and PMSC, they showed to be well-resisted to acidification.
Modeling and simulation for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process in bioconversion of paper mill sludge to lactic acid was carried out. The SSF process combined the enzymatic hydrolysis of paper mill sludge into glucose and the fermentation of glucose into lactic acid in one reactor. A mathematical modeling for cellulose hydrolysis was developed, based on the proposed mechanism of cellulase adsorption deactivation. Another model for simple lactic acid fermentation was also made. A whole mathematical model for SSF was developed by combining the above two models for cellulose hydrolysis and lactic acid fermentation. The characteristics of the SSF process were investigated using the mathematical model.
This paper is studied on the effect of TiAlN coated ball end mill on cutting characteristic of high hardness steels in dry cutting condition without coolant. KP4 steels[HRC32] and STD11[HRC60] heat treated steels wert: used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill and single and multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill were utilized. Results showed that TiAlN coated ball end mill were increased the cutting length than WC-Co ball end mill in the cutting speed$[245\~320m/min]$ about $2\~5$ times for KP4 steels and about $2.7\~4.3$ times for STD11 heat treated steels. The multi layer TiAlN coated ball end mill is good about $1.2\~1.7$ times for KP4 steels and STD11 steels than single layer coated.
Tool wear monitoring is an important technique in the flexible manufacturing system. This paper studies the end mill wear detection using CCD camera and pattern recognition method. When the end mill working in the machining center, the bottom edge of the end mill geometry change, this information is used. The CCD camera grab the new and worn tool geometry and the area of the tool geometry was compared. In this result, when the values of the subtract worn tool from new tool end in 200 pixels, it decides the tool life. This paper proposed the new method of the end mill wear detection.
This paper describes a rotation-type field mill to measure the electric field intensity caused by thunderclouds on the ground level. The field mill developed is consisted of two isolated electrode vanes, a grounded stator and a rotor. To develop a high sensitive field mill, the principles and design rules of a rotation-type field mill are studied. Also, two types of calibration system, such as a cylindrical guard electrodes and a parallel-plate electrodes, are proposed to determine the sensitivity and frequency bandwidth of the field mill. From the calibration experiment, the frequency bandwidth and the sensitivity of the field mill arc DC ∼ 200 [MHz] and 0.267 [mV/Vm], respectively. Therefore, it can measure the electric field intensity from 73[V/m] to 18.7[kV/m].
A diagnosis system that provides early warnings regarding machine malfunction is very important for rolling mill so as to avoid great losses resulting from unexpected shutdown of the production line. But it is very difficult to provide early warnings in rolling mill. Because dynamics of rolling mill is non-linear. This paper proposes a new method for diagnosis of rolling mill using wavelet to solve this problem. Proposed method that measures the vibration signals of rolling mill on-line and analyze it using wavelet to acquire pattern datas. And we design a nero-fuzzy model that diagnose a rolling mill using this data. Validity of the new method is asserted by numerical simulation.
