Pulp and paper industry is a typical plant industry which usually consume lots of water and energy. Recently, environmental issues have become more important due to climate changes around the world, and reinforcement in the regulatory content in transfer and management of chemical material and that in environmental regulations for waste water and air. Paper industry is a source material recycle industry which recycle or reuse waste paper, recyclable wood, planned plantation or lumber from thinning and waste wood. Hence it can be said that paper industry is the representative industry for earth environment and of 21th century.

The objective of this article is to review the impact of emerging information technology on printing and paper industry. Todays developing information technology affects every corner of ones daily life and will bring dramatic changes in printing and paper industry, which should be regarded as definite trend that every participant in the industry must follow in any manner. Reviewing relevant technologies and quoting recent survey conducted by Boston Consulting Group will hopefully lead to a basic understanding of the impact of the transition of information distributing methods on printing and paper industry.

This study was carried out to understand the present status of the quality evaluation capability of domestic fine paper industry. Six light weight coated papers and one wood containing printing and writing paper with similar basis weights were produced by seven paper companies and their properties were evaluated at four different testing laboratories of domestic fine paper mills. Paper properties including basis weight , thickness , tensile, tear , brightness , opacity, etc were examined , and the repeat ability and reproducibility of the test results were analyzed. Results showed that repeatability of the measurements within the laboratory was satisfactory . Reproducibility of the measurements between laboratories, however, was not satisfactory. This showed that strict implementation of the standard testing methods and periodic calibration of testing equipments should be made to improve quality evaluation capability of domestic fine paper industry.

The paper industry has experienced locational shifts in the continuous innovations in raw materials and process technology. Due to the different conditions of production according to various nations and regions, the structure and location of the paper industry has evolved. Therefore, case studies of individual nations and regions are significant in understanding the various developments in the paper industry. The present study focuses on the locational shift in the development process of the paper industry in Korea, and explains the conditions in the factors of production, market and government policies. Firstly, the study examines the changes in the structure of the Korean pulp and paper industry from the early twentieth century until today, the conditions for factors of production, the change in the raw materials, the Korean paper industry staring as a pulp manufacturing process-focused then into a paper manufacturing process-focused. Secondly, the study determines how the current paper industry considers raw materials and market in the location selection process. Finally, the study explains how the locational shifts in the paper industry progressed with the implementation of location regulations in the metropolitan area since the late 1970s.

Carbon dioxide emission trading market would play very important role in the global effort to cope with climate change. In KOREA, the energy consumption and geen house gas emission of various industry would be controlled by the low carbon-green growth law which was established at 2009. The paper industry as one of major industries in terms of energy consumption has been greatly required to prepare action plan for addressing this regulation and reduction of carbon dioxide emission. In this study, the current states of carbon dioxide emission trading market were analyzed in terms of practical responses of the paper industry. And the various action plans including CDM projects for paper industry were suggested.

The history of the paper industry has shown a strong technological evolution which has been an essential factor in achieving low cost, high quality paper products and in sustaining the strength of the industry. In the last decades paper machine development has been rapid. This has helped to establish paper as a "low cost" material. In future, the pressure from the competing media will only accelerate the technological efforts to improve cost and functional'||'&'||'not;ity of paper. In addition, in the future, technological advances will be combined with innovation in busi'||'&'||'not;ness concepts. Certain production methods are likely to be developed which will distribute current process stages outside the paper mill. Papermakers can begin to reduce their invest'||'&'||'not;ment risk by subcontracting large-scale base paper production but taking responsibility for the higher value finishing process stages. Finishing will be more closely integrated with the final use. The role of technology supplier to the paper industry will naturally evolve to reflect all these changes. Metso is already actively collaborating downstream in the different paper-related business chains. This collaboration will be crucial for implementation of new business and technology innovations in P'||'&'||'P industry and Metso will certainly benefit from its catalyst role in this transition.
