Combustion performance of an internally cycloned circulating fluidized bed for paper sludge was discussed through a series of batch type experiments. Operation parameters such as water content, feeding mass of sludge and secondary air injection rate were varied to find out the effect on the combustion performance, which was examined with carbon conversion rate and pollutant emission such as CO and NOx. A conventional solid fuel reaction was observed in the experiments of varying water content and feeding mass of the sludge, which is characterized with kinetic limited reaction zone, diffusion limited reaction zone and transition zone. Secondary air injection with swirl enhances the mixing of the gas phase as well as the solid phase, and improves combustion efficiency accompanied with higher carbon conversion rate and lower pollutant emission rate.
Solubilization of sewage sludge creates favorable conditions for anaerobic microorganisms to produce biogas. In this paper, we quantify the effect of heating pretreatment on the degree of solubilization of sewage sludge. The pretreatment process was carried out using a lab-scale industrial microwave unit (2450 MHz frequency). Response surface analysis was applied to determine the combination of temperature-increase rate (ramp rate) (2.9 to 17.1 ${^{\circ}C}$/min) and terminal temperature (52 to 108${^{\circ}C}$). Both ramp rate and temperature significantly affected the solubilization degree of sludge. Within the design boundaries, the conditions predicted to maximize the solubilization degree of 15.8% were determined to be 2.9 ${^{\circ}C}$/min and 104${^{\circ}C}$.
The aim of this paper was to study the effect of five different waste combinations (C/N 15, C/N 20, C/N 25, C/N 30, and control) of sewage sludge coupled with sawdust and cattle manure in a pilot scale rotary drum reactor, during 20 days of the composting process. Our results showed that C/N 30 possesses a higher temperature regime with higher % reduction in moisture content, total organic carbon, soluble biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand; and higher % gain in total nitrogen and phosphorus at the end of the composting period implying the total amount of biodegradable organic material is stabilized. In addition, $CO_2$ evolution and oxygen uptake rate decreased during the process, reflecting the stable behavior of the final compost. A Solvita maturity index of 8 indicated that the compost was stable and ready for usage as a soil conditioner. The results indicated that composting can be an alternate technology for the management of sewage sludge disposal.
The purpose of this study is to predict the performance of a cyclone drying machine and air ejector used in drying applications. This paper deals with optimization of the geometry of the ejector for sludge drying using computational fluid dynamics. To facilitate the design of a jet ejector for air drying machines, a numerical model of simultaneous mass and heat transfers between the liquid(sludge) and gas(air) phases in the jet ejector was developed. The steady-state model was based on unidimensional balance equations of mass, energy and momentum for the liquid and gas phases. It was shown that the optimum condition to minimize pressure and momentum loss of air in the ejector was d=220mm. It was found that sludge particles inside the cyclone was smoothly discharged by the conical wedge installed on the bottom of the cyclone.
As the meaning of dictionary terminology, scum refers to a layer of impurities that accumulates at the surface of a liquid. In papermaking process, scum indicates the floated solid waste generated by a flotation process during the primary wastewater treatment. In this study, different kinds of stocks and scums collected from newspaper, liner, tissue and fine paper were analysed in details. The purpose of this study was firstly to demonstrate the composition characteristics of different sources of scum, secondly the analysis of environmental hazardous materials, and thirdly the evaluation of reutilization ability of fibrous materials from collected scum. As mentioned the meaning of solid waste, scum was actually differ from the waste sludge in sources, compositions and recycling abilities. In the same manner of waste paper, the sludge which is generated within onsite of papermaking processes would be reused as a raw material. The general compositions of scum from waste water were mainly inorganic ash materials, fine fibre fractions, recycled fibre debries, and ink particles. If the scum is able to reuse as fibrous additives in papermaking process, it could contribute to the savings of running costs in both the subsidiaries of fibrous material and the solid waste treatment with even small quantity.
An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the treatment efficiency of paper-mill wastewater using pure oxygen activated sludge process. Effects of hydraulic retention time (HRT) and organic loading on process performance and kinetics were investigated. The raw paper-mill wastewater(BOD concentration ${\leq}500mg/L$) and the effluent from dissolved air flotation(DAF) treatment(BOD concentration ${\geq}500mg/L$) were used as influent for pure oxygen activated sludge process. Average BOD removal efficiencies were above 89.3% under 6hours or longer of HRT, while under 3hours of HRT they decreased to about 82%. With the effluent from DAF process, the half saturation constants($K_S$) and the maximum specific substrate removal rate($K_{max}$) were 85 mg/L and 2.25 L/day, respectively. However, with the raw paper-mill wastewater, both $K_S$ and $K_{max}$ increased to 156 mg/L and 3.84 L/day, respectively. The microbial yield coefficient(Y) and the decay coefficient($K_d$) were 0.46 gVSS/gBOD and 0.03 L/day, respectively, with effluent from DAF process. While, Y and $K_d$ were 0.24 gVSS/gBOD and 0.035 L/day, respectively, with the raw paper-mill wastewater.
