This paper deals with general equations of motion for free vibration analysis response of thick three-layer doubly curved sandwich panels (DCSP) under simply supported boundary conditions (BCs) using higher order shear deformation theory. In this model, the face sheets are orthotropic laminated composite that follow the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) based on Rissners-Mindlin (RM) kinematics field. The core is made of orthotropic material and its in-plane transverse displacements are modeled using the third order of the Taylor's series extension. It provides the potentiality for considering both compressible and incompressible cores. To find these equations and boundary conditions, Hamilton's principle is used. Also, the effect of trapezoidal shape factor for cross-section of curved panel element ($1{\pm}z/R$) is considered. The natural frequency parameters of DCSP are obtained using Galerkin Method. Convergence studies are performed with the appropriate formulas in general form for three-layer sandwich plate, cylindrical and spherical shells (both deep and shallow). The influences of core stiffness, ratio of core to face sheets thickness and radii of curvatures are investigated. Finally, for the first time, an optimum range for the core to face sheet stiffness ratio by considering the existence of in-plane stress which significantly affects the natural frequencies of DCSP are presented.
Masonry is not a simple material, the influence of mortar joints as a plane of weakness is a significant feature and this makes the numerical modelling of masonry very difficult especially when dynamic (seismic) analysis is involved. In order to develop a simple numerical model for masonry under earthquake load, an analytical model based on Distinct Element Method (DEM) is being developed. At the first stage, the model is applied to simulate the in-plane shear behaviour of an unreinforced masonry wall with and without opening where the testing results are available for comparison. In DEM, a solid is represented as an assembly of discrete blocks. Joints are modelled as interface between distinct bodies. It is a dynamic process and specially designed to model the behaviour of discontinuities. The numerical solutions obtained from the distinct element analysis are validated by comparing the results with those obtained from existing experiments and finite element modelling.
This paper presents an efficient membrane finite element for the cyclic inelastic response analysis of RC structures under complex plane stress states including shear. The model strikes a balance between accuracy and numerical efficiency to meet the challenge of shear wall simulations in earthquake engineering practice. The concrete material model at the integration points of the finite element is based on damage plasticity with two damage parameters. All reinforcing bars with the same orientation are represented by an embedded orthotropic steel layer based on uniaxial stress-strain relation, so that the dowel and bond-slip effect of the reinforcing steel are presently neglected in the interest of computational efficiency. The model is validated with significant experimental results of the cyclic response of RC panels with uniform stress states.

This paper presents the details of studies conducted on hollow concrete block masonry (HCBM) units and wall panels. This study includes, compressive strength of unit block, ungrouted and grouted HCB prisms, flexural strength evaluation, testing of HCBM panels with and without opening. Non-linear finite element (FE) analysis of HCBM panels with and without opening has been carried out by simulating the actual test conditions. Constant vertical load is applied on the top of the wall panel and then lateral load is applied in incremental manner. The in-plane deformation is recorded under each incremental lateral load. Displacement ductility factors and response reduction factors have been evaluated based on experimental results. From the study, it is observed that fully grouted and partially reinforced HCBM panel without opening performed well compared to other types of wall panels in lateral load resistance and displacement ductility. In all the wall panels, shear cracks originated at loading point and moved towards the compression toe of the wall. The force reduction factor of a wall panel with opening is much less when compared with fully reinforced wall panel with no opening. The displacement values obtained by non-linear FE analysis are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. The influence of mortar joint has been included in the stress-strain behaviour as a monolith with HCBM and not considered separately. The derived response reduction factors will be useful for the design of reinforced HCBM wall panels subjected to lateral forces generated due to earthquakes.

When the perforated panels are under in-plane shear loads, shear buckling analysis is also necessary because of the presence of stress concentration around holes. To constrain it, we need some reinforcement. The methods of reinforcement are attaching doubler around hole and stiffeners in the arbitary directions. In this paper, two kinds of methods mentioned above are investigated, it is also clarified that which of the two is the more effective reinforcement. For the sake of convenience those arbitary directions were selected parallel ($90^{\circ}$) and oblique ($135^{\circ}$) to the edge. From the results of the above investigation, following conclusion was obtained. In case of parallel stiffeners, doubler reinforcement gives higher buckling strength than stiffener, however, in case of oblique stiffeners, doubler reinforcement gives higher buckling strength than doubler when the external load direction is known.
This study deals with dynamic model of composite sandwich panels with functionally graded flexible cores under low velocity impacts of multiple large or small masses using a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory (IHSAPT). In-plane stresses were considered for the functionally graded core and face sheets. The formulation was based on the first order shear deformation theory for the composite face sheets and polynomial description of the displacement fields in the core that was based on the second Frostig's model. Fully dynamic effects of the functionally graded core and face-sheets were considered in this study. Impacts were assumed to occur simultaneously and normally over the top and/or bottom of the face-sheets with arbitrary different masses and initial velocities. The contact forces between the panel and impactors were treated as internal forces of the system. Nonlinear contact stiffness was linearized with a newly presented improved analytical method in this paper. The results were validated by comparing the analytical, numerical and experimental results published in the latest literature.
Corrugated steel plate shear wall (CSPSW) as an innovative lateral load resisting system provides various advantages in comparison with the flat steel plate shear wall, including remarkable in-plane and out-of-plane stiffnesses and stability, greater elastic shear buckling stress, increasing the amount of cumulative dissipated energy and maintaining efficiency even in large story drifts. Employment of low yield point (LYP) steel web plate in steel shear walls can dramatically improve their structural performance and prevent early stage instability of the panels. This paper presents a comprehensive structural performance assessment of corrugated low yield point steel plate shear walls having circular openings located in different positions. Accordingly, following experimental verification of CSPSW finite element models, several trapezoidally horizontal CSPSW (H-CSPSW) models having LYP steel web plates as well as circular openings (for ducts) perforated in various locations have been developed to explore their hysteresis behavior, cumulative dissipated energy, lateral stiffness, and ultimate strength under cyclic loading. Obtained results reveal that the rehabilitation of damaged steel shear walls using corrugated LYP steel web plate can enhance their structural performance. Furthermore, choosing a suitable location for the circular opening regarding the design purpose paves the way for the achievement of the shear wall's optimal performance.

Sandwich structures with the superior mechanical properties such as high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio, good thermal insulation, and high energy absorption capacity are used today in aerospace, automotive, marine, and civil engineering industries. These structures are composed of moderately stiff, thin face sheets that withstand the majority of transverse and in-plane loads, separated by a thick, lightweight core that resists shear forces. In this research, the finite element technique is used to simulate a sandwich panel with a truss core under axial compressive stress using ABAQUS software. A review of past experimental studies shows that the bondline between the core and face sheets plays a vital role in the critical failure load. Therefore, this modeling analyzes the damage initiation modes and debonding between face sheet and core by cohesive surface contact with traction-separation model. According to the results obtained from the modeling, it can be observed that the adhesive stiffness has a significant influence on the critical failure load of the specimens. To achieve the full strength of the structure as a continuum, a lower limit is obtained for the adhesive stiffness. By providing this limit stiffness between the core and the panel face sheets, sudden failure of the structure can be prevented.
This paper presents the semi-analytical development of the dynamic instability behavior and the dynamic response of functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shallow shell panel subjected to different type of periodic axial compression. First, in prebuckling analysis, the stresses distribution within the panels are determined for respective loading type and these stresses are used to study the dynamic instability behavior and the dynamic response. The prebuckling stresses within the shell panel are the same as applied in-plane edge loading for the case of uniform and linearly varying loadings. However, this is not true for the case of parabolic loadings. The parabolic edge loading produces all the stresses (${\sigma}_{xx}$, ${\sigma}_{yy}$ and ${\tau}_{xy}$) within the FG cylindrical panel. These stresses are evaluated by minimizing the membrane energy via Ritz method. Using these stresses the partial differential equations of FG cylindrical panel are formulated by applying Hamilton's principal assuming higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) and von-$K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ non-linearity. The non-linear governing partial differential equations are converted into a set of Mathieu-Hill equations via Galerkin's method. Bolotin method is adopted to trace the boundaries of instability regions. The linear and non-linear dynamic responses in stable and unstable region are plotted to know the characteristics of instability regions of FG cylindrical panel. Moreover, the non-linear frequency-amplitude responses are obtained using Incremental Harmonic Balance (IHB) method.

Recently, nine $1397{\times}1397{\times}178mm$ RC panels were tested under in-plane pure-shear monotonic loading condition using the Panel Element Tester by Hsu (1997, ACI). By combining the equilibrium, compatibility, and the softened stress-strain relationship of concrete in biaxial state, Modern Truss Model (MCFT, RA-STM) are capable of producing the nonlinear analysis of RC membrane panel through the complicated trial-and-error method with double loop. In this paper, an efficient algorithm with one loop is proposed for the refined Mohr compatibility Method based on the strut-tie failure criteria. This algorithm can be speedy calculated to analyze the shear history of RC membrane element using the results of Hsu test. The results indicate that the response of shear deformation energy at Big Bang of shear strain significantly influenced by the principal compressive stress-strain (crushing failure).
