  • This paper is concerned with the simulator to estimate deformation due to welding of panel blocks. An efficient computer program system has been developed which can be applied both to estimation of weld-induced deformation under the given welding conditions and to reflection of effect when methods for deformation control are applied. This paper briefly describes the background of the present simulator and sows some results applying the simulator to estimation of weld-induced deformation. In addition results when methods for deformation control are applied are also included.

  • To evaluate highway safety countermeasures or identify high risk sites, the expected crashes for a site (or segment) have been estimated using the panel crash data. Past studies show that two different methods can be employed to estimate the expected crashes: observed crash based method and empirical Bayes (EB) method. This study conducts a simulation study to analyze how the estimation errors of the two estimates are affected by the different structures of the panel crash data and the presence of the change in safety over time. The results disclose that the estimation errors of the observed crash based estimates (i.e. the mean observed crash and comparative parallel estimate) are always greater than those of the EB estimates regardless of the structure of the panel crash data and the presence of the change in safety over time. Thus, it is highly recommended that the EB method be used in the study of traffic safety to obtain more reliable estimates for the expected crashes. In addition, this study corroborates that the estimation errors of the two estimates decrease as the analysis periods increase if safety does not change over time. Hence, it is also recommended that the 1-year analysis period used for identifying high risk sites in Korea be extended to produce more efficient estimates of the time-constant expected crashes.

  • Sample attrition according to a long-term tracking reduces the representativeness of the sample data in a panel study. Most panel surveys in South Korea and other countries have prepared response adjustment weights in order to solve problems regarding representativeness due to sample attrition. In this paper, we divided the panel data into continuous response group and non-continuous response group according to response patterns and considered a weighting adjustment method to reduce the bias of the non-continuous response group. A simulation indicated that the proposed composite estimation type weighting method, which reflected the characteristics of non-continuous response groups, could be more efficient than other weighting methods in terms of reducing non-response bias. As a case study, the proposed methods are applied to the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA) data of the Korea Employment Information Service.

  • This paper estimates the union effect on the wages using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study by using fixed-effect estimation. While the cross-sectional estimates show the size of 4.6% increase in the wages of workers in the union compared 10 the observationally identical workers in the non-union jobs, the union wage effect is estimated as 2.1% increase in the panel study. This shows that there exits an substantial upward-bias in the cross-sectional estimation of union wage effect.

  • It was recognized by some researchers that the disturbance variance in a censored regression model is frequently underestimated by the maximum likelihood method. This underestimation has implications for the estimation of marginal effects and asymptotic standard errors. For instance, the actual coverage probability of the confidence interval based on a maximum likelihood estimate can be significantly smaller than the nominal confidence level; consequently, a Bayesian estimation is considered to overcome this difficulty. The behaviors of the maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimators of disturbance variance are examined in a fixed effects panel regression model with a limited dependent variable, which is known to have the incidental parameter problem. Behavior under random effect assumption is also investigated.

  • This paper investigates the relationship between financial markets and output growth for a panel of 27 Asian countries over 1960-2009. It utilizes the recently-developed panel cointegration techniques to test and estimate the long-run equilibrium relationship between real GDP and financial development proxies. Real GDP and financial development variables are found to have unit roots and to be cointegrated, based on various panel unit root tests and panel cointegration tests. We find that there is a statistically significant positive bi-directional cointegrating relationship between financial development and output growth by three distinct methods of panel cointegration estimation. Empirical findings suggest that financial market development promotes output growth and in turn output growth stimulates further financial development.

  • The curved panel is widely used for display of TVs and smart phones. This paper proposes a new auto-focusing method for curved panel inspection system. Since the distance between the camera and the panel varies with the curve position, the camera should change its focus at every inspection time. In order to reduce the focusing time, we propose an effective focusing method that considers the mathematical model of panel curve. The Lagrange polynomial equation is applied to modeling the panel curve. The foci of initial three points are used to get the curve equation, and the other foci are calculated automatically from the curve equation. The experiment result shows that the proposed method can reduce the focusing time.

  • Purpose - Considering that the governments' official statistics on the optimum scale of the domestic service industry will be crucial in future, this study's results will be used as an important benchmark to develop and verify the parameters in the government's official statistics. Research design, data, and methodology - To identify the appropriate scale of Korea's service industry and its adequacy, I have determined them through estimation using a regression method involving panel data analysis on the panel data of 30 OECD countries. Results - The regression coefficient provided indications of being non-linear. This means that a U-shaped curve relationship exists-that is, the level of the economic growth leverage decreases along with the service industry's growth up to the level of 70.9% in terms of the Korean service industry's adequacy; it increases along with the service industry's growth at a level higher than 70.9%. Conclusions - While the current proportion of the size of the service industry among all industries in Korea stands at 50.7%, its proper proportion estimated by a regression analysis was 70.9%.
