  • This study aims to determine the impact of the news coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic on the composite stocks' movement (IHSG) in Indonesia. This study used secondary data of daily time series with an observation range of March 2020-June 2020. This study used three main variables, namely, COVID-19 news, the daily price of a composite stock market index (IHSG), and interest rate. This study clarifies pandemic news into two forms to facilitate quantitative analysis, namely, good news and bad news. Both pandemic news conditions, which have been clarified, are then processed into the index and reprocessed along with two other variables using vector autoregressive (VAR). The results showed that the good news have a dominant effect on developing the composite stock price index (IHSG) in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the good news dominates the composite stock price index (IHSG) movement in Indonesia, the bad news must also be anticipated. By implementing a series of macroeconomic policies that follow the conditions of the composite stock price index (IHSG) movements on the stock exchange floor, the bad news response can decrease the potential for a decline in investor confidence, so that the financial system's macroeconomic stability is maintained.

These findings Not only provide crucial insights into understanding the dynamics of news consumption behavior but also offer valuable reference points for the news industry to better fulfill its role and value during crises in the future.

Fake news is spread by people mostly for political reasons and intention to cause panic. • Are intentions important in deciding the outcome of an action such as sharing misinformation among social media users during the pandemic? What is their role and how far they are important for the very act of fake sharing news? The social media users' actions on the social platform are determined by what they plan to do themselves; however, their motivation has an immense role to play in the dissemination of fake news on social media. The study proposes a conceptual model for understanding how select factors affect fake news sharing motivation and intentions of social media users. The study scrutinizes the relationship between content and context, fear of missing out (FoMO), news verification and news sharing gratification on the motivation and intention of social media users of networked Asian society. Empirical Data were drawn from social media users (N = 243) from India, using an online questionnaire based on prior studies and structural equation modeling (SEM) approach was used to analyze the data collected. Results indicate that news content, news verification, and news sharing gratification have a direct and positive relationship with sharing motivation. On the other hand, news context and content, FoMO and news sharing gratification have a positive significant relationship with sharing intention. Likewise, it was discovered that news verification will decrease sharing intention of the social media users. However, news context, that is the pandemic in the case of the present study and FoMO were not identified as determinant variables for sharing motivation among social media users. The research limitations and further scope were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the reporting practices and news production of the reporters working with Korean media over the past one year. To this end, this study has conducted in-depth interviews with reporters working with daily newspapers, news agencies, and broadcasting companies. The analysis of the interviews resulted in the following generalizations. The reporters are working at home, which was never experienced before the Covid-19 pandemic, and they have difficulties in covering their reporting beats because they have little or no access to contact points. The reporters rely heavily on indirect coverage and online briefings via phones or SNS because they have difficulties in meeting news sources in person. As a result, the diversity of news contents and the media's on-site monitoring functions has been severely weakened. In addition, the reporters have no chances to both exchange ideas with fellow reporters and to transfer the know-how of collecting news items to their juniors. This paper has also discussed the disruption of practices that the ongoing Covid-19 has brought to the media ecosystem from a variety of perspectives.

  • This study aims to explore the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) between ten Asian stock indexes, the US stock index, and Bitcoin by using the dynamic conditional correlation model. The time span of the daily data is between January 2015 to May 2021, the total observation is 1,116. DCC(1,1)-EGARCH(1,1) with multivariate t and normal distributions for the DCC and EGARCH models, respectively, outperforms other models by the goodness of fit values. Except for Bitcoin, we discovered that the majority of the securities' volatilities have a very high volatility persistence. Furthermore, the negative shocks/news have more impact on the volatilities than positive shocks/news in most of the cases, except the stock index of China and Bitcoin. Most of the correlation pairs exhibit higher correlation during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-COVID-19, except Hong Kong-The US and Malaysia-Indonesia. Moreover, the correlation between Asian stock indexes during the COVID-19 pandemic is statistically higher than the pre-COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are a few instances where the Hong Kong stock index and a few countries are identical. The result of correlation size shows the connectedness between Asian stock markets, which are well-connected within the region, especially with South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

  • This study aims to investigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets of sixteen countries. Pooled OLS regression, conventional t-test and Mann-Whitney test are used to estimate the results of the study. We construct a weekly panel data of COVID-19 new cases and stock returns. Pooled OLS estimation result shows that the growth rate of weekly new cases of COVID-19 negatively predicts the return in stock market. Next, the returns on leading stock indices of these countries during the COVID-19 outbreak period are compared with returns during the non-COVID period. We use a t-test and Mann-Whitney test to compare the returns. The results reveal that investors in these countries do not react to the media news of COVID-19 at the early stage of the pandemic. However, once the human-to-human transmissibility had been confirmed, all of the stock market indices negatively reacted to the news in the short- and long-event window. Interestingly, we noticed that the Shanghai Composite Index, which was severely affected during the short-event window, bounced back during the long-event window. This indicates that the Chinese government's drastic measures to contain the spread of the pandemic regained the confidence of investors in the Shanghai Stock Market.
