Optical payloads for earth-observation satellites become bigger as the required resolution becomes finer. For example, the diameter of the primary mirror of IKONOS, which has ground sampling distances of 1m/4m in panchromatic/multi spectral bands, is about 700mm. As the size of optical payload becomes bigger, the light-weighting of the mirrors becomes more significant. This paper presents the FEM results of the following four mirror types of 300 m diameter under gravity release and temperature changes: flat back mirror, single arch mirror, double arch mirror, and honeycomb sandwich mirror. Furthermore, this paper extends the FEM results to larger mirrors up to the diameter of 1m based on a general scaling law and Valenete\`s equation.
In order to evaluate the Capability of ETM+ remotely- sensed data to provide 'Forest-shrub land-Rangeland' cover type map in areas near the timberline of northern forests of Iran, the data were analyzed in a portion of nearly 790 ha located in Neka-Zalemroud region. First, ortho-rectification process was used to correct the geometric errors of the image, yielding 0/68 and 0/69 pixels of RMS. error in X and Y axis, respectively. The original and panchromatic bands were fused using PANSHARP Statistical module. The ground truth map was made using 1 ha field plots in a systematic-random sampling grid, and vegetative form of trees, shrubs and rangelands was recorded as a criteria to name the plots. A set of channels including original bands, NDVI and IR/R indices and first components of PCI from visible and infrared bands, was used for classification procedure. Pair-wise divergence through CHNSEL command was used, In order to evaluate the separability of classes and selection of optimal channels. Classification was performed using ML classifier, on both original and fused data sets. Showing the best results of $67\%$ of overall accuracy, and 0/43 of Kappa coefficient in original data set. Due to the results represented above, it's concluded that ETM+ data has an intermediate capability to fulfill the spectral variations of three form- based classes over the study area.
Satellite cameras are calibrated before launch in detail and in general, but it cannot be guaranteed that the geometry is not changing during launch and caused by thermal influence of the sun in the orbit. Modem satellite imaging systems are based on CCD-line sensors. Because of the required high sampling rate the length of used CCD-lines is limited. For reaching a sufficient swath width, some CCD-lines are combined to a longer virtual CCD-line. The images generated by the individual CCD-lines do overlap slightly and so they can be shifted in x- and y-direction in relation to a chosen reference image just based on tie points. For the alignment and difference in scale, control points are required. The resulting virtual image has only negligible errors in areas with very large difference in height caused by the difference in the location of the projection centers. Color images can be related to the joint panchromatic scenes just based on tie points. Pan-sharpened images may show only small color shifts in very mountainous areas and for moving objects. The direct sensor orientation has to be calibrated based on control points. Discrepancies in horizontal shift can only be separated from attitude discrepancies with a good three-dimensional control point distribution. For such a calibration a program based on geometric reconstruction of the sensor orientation is required. The approximations by 3D-affine transformation or direct linear transformation (DL n cannot be used. These methods do have also disadvantages for standard sensor orientation. The image orientation by geometric reconstruction can be improved by self calibration with additional parameters for the analysis and compensation of remaining systematic effects for example caused by a not linear CCD-line. The determined sensor geometry can be used for the generation? of rational polynomial coefficients, describing the sensor geometry by relations of polynomials of the ground coordinates X, Y and Z.
Since PAN(panchromatic) and MS(multispectral) imagery of pushbroom scanner have the offset between PAN and MS CCD(charge coupled device) in the focal plane, PAN and MS images are acquired at different time and angle. Since clouds are fast moving objects, they should lead mis-registration problem with wrong matching points on clouds. The registration of cloudy imagery to recognize and remove the contamination of clouds can be categorized into three classes: (1) cloud is considered as nose and removed (2) employing multi-spectral imagery (3) using multi-temporal imagery. In this paper, method (1) and (3) are implemented and analysed with cloudy pushbroom scanner images.
The objective of this study is to propose efficient data fusion techniques feasible to the KOMPSAT-2 satellite images. The most widely used image fusion techniques, which are the high-pass filter (HPF), the intensity-hue-saturation-based (modified IHS), the pan-sharpened, and the wavelet-based methods, was applied to four KOMPSAT - 2 satellite images having different regional and seasonal characteristics. Each fusion result was compared and analyzed in spatial and spectral features, respectively. Quality evaluation of image fusion techniques was performed in both quantitative and visual analysis. The quantitative analysis methods used for this study were the relative global dimensional error (spatial and spectral ERGAS), the spectral angle mapper index (SAM), and the image quality index (Q4). The results of quantitative and visual analysis indicate that the pan-sharpened method among the fusion methods used for this study relatively has the suitable balance between spectral and spatial information. In the case of the modified IHS method, the spatial information is well preserved, while the spectral information is distorted. And also the HPF and wavelet methods do not preserve the spectral information but the spatial information.

High resolution Pan-sharpening technique is becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis as an essential image processing to improve the spatial resolution of original multispectral image. The general scheme of pan-sharpening technique consists of upsampling process of multispectral image and high-pass detail injection process using the panchromatic image. The upsampling process, however, brings about image blurring, and this lead to spectral distortion in the pan-sharpening process. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents a new method that adopts image restoration techniques based on optimization theory in the pan-sharpening process, and evaluates its efficiency and application possibility. In order to evaluate the effect of image restoration techniques on the pansharpening process, the result obtained using the existing method that used bicubic interpolation were compared visually and quantitatively with the results obtained using image restoration techniques. The quantitative comparison was done using some spectral distortion measures for use to evaluate the quality of pan-sharpened image.
Public education is undoubtedly a very important aspect for a country to develop space program. People have the rights to understand how the tax they paid is being used. This paper addresses the effectiveness of FORMOSAT-2 on public education in Taiwan. As the first remote sensing satellite of the National Space Organization (NSPO) of Taiwan, FORMOSAT-2 is a small satellite of 746 kg mass for two remote sensing missions: Earth and upward lightning observations. The mission orbit is sun-synchronous of 888 km altitude for exactly 14 revolutions per day. For earth observation, the payload is an advanced high resolution remote sensing instrument (RSI) with ground sampling distance (GSD) 2 m in panchromatic (PAN) band and 8 m in four multi-spectral (MS) bands. For upward lightning observation, the payload is an imager of sprites and upper atmospheric lightning (ISUAL). After more than two years of Earth observation started in June 2004, the effectiveness of FORMOSAT-2 images on public education in Taiwan is very promised. Five domestic universities and one private company in Taiwan have signed contracts respectively with NSPO to take the roles of satellite image investigator and distributor. A private company has signed contract with NSPO to generate and provide URMAP (= your map) in its website for general public applications by using FORMOSAT-2 images. The Newtonkids Book Company used FORMOSAT-2 images to publish a kind of calendar for children education purpose. Besides, a science team in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is doing the research work on the 3820 (up to 30 June 2006) transient luminous events (TLEs) observed by FORMOSAT-2.
This study compared effects of spatial resolution ratio in image fusion by Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite 2 (KOMPSAT II), also known as Arirang-2. Image fusion techniques, also called pansharpening, are required to obtain color imagery with high spatial resolution imagery using panchromatic and multi-spectral images. The higher quality satellite images generated by an image fusion technique enable interpreters to produce better application results. Thus, image fusions categorized in 3 domains were applied to find out significantly improved fused images using KOMPSAT 2. In addition, all fused images were evaluated to satisfy both spectral and spatial quality to investigate an optimum fused image. Additionally, this research compared Pixel-Based Image Analysis (PBIA) with the GEOgraphic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) to make better classification results. Specifically, a roof top of building was extracted by both image analysis approaches and was finally evaluated to obtain the best accurate result. This research, therefore, provides the effective use for very high resolution satellite imagery with image interpreter to be used for many applications such as coastal area, urban and regional planning.
This paper represents methods to calculate heights of buildings by estimating their shadow lengths in a single and panchromatic image of the KVR-1000 camera system Shadows are identified Com brightness intensity of each pixel, and their lengths are measured. Two methods are implemented to estimate heights from shadows. One method is to use a ratio of shadow s lengths with respect to heights of reference buildings measured on site. The other method uses sun elevation angles calculated from various camera s parameters at the exposure time. The estimated heights of 20 buildings are compared with heights measured on site, and the RMS errors for each method are 1.70m and 1.75m, respectively. When a resampling method to enhance identification of shadows is used and their lengths are accordingly re-calculated, the estimated errors for each method are significantly reduced to 1.17m and 1.16m, respectively. Meanwhile, effects of land slope on shadows can be hardly obtained unless detailed DTM(digital terrain model) are available, and they introduce additional errors up to 25m.
The importance of satellite data for numerous applications is stressed by the fact that many countries have given the development of space technologies very high priority. Among these, Korea has established a medium-term space development strategy to promote space development both on a scientific as well as commercial level. As part of this strategy, the first operational earth-observation, multi-purpose satellite(KOMPSAT-1) was launched successfully in December, 1999. The Electro-Optical Camera (EOC) on board of KOMPSAT-1 supplies panchromatic images with a spatial resolution of 6.6m Until April, 2004, it collected over 150.000 images of the Korean Peninsula and the rest of the world. This paper examines the use of remote sensing data to analyze urban growth in the city of Daejeon from 1960 to 2003. By using visual interpretation, land use maps are created.
