  • The multiple length scale analysis of previously designed Fe-Mn-Al-C based low-density model alloys reveals the difference in ordered ${\kappa}-carbide$, $(Fe,Mn)_3AlC_x$, between Fe-25Mn-16Al-5.2C (at%) alloy and Fe-3Mn-10Al-1.2C (at%) alloy. For the former alloy composition consisting of fully austenite grains, ${\kappa}-carbide$ showed majorly cuboidal and minorly pancake morphology and its chemical composition was not changed through aging for 24 h and 168 h at $600^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, for the isothermally annealed ferritic alloy system for 1 hr at 500 and $600^{\circ}C$, the dramatic change in the chemical composition of needle-shape ${\kappa}-carbide$, $(Fe,Mn)_3(Fe,Al)C_x$, was found. Here we address that the compositional fluctuations in the vicinity of the carbides are significantly controlled by abutting phase, either austenite or ferrite. Namely, the cooperative ordering of carbon and Al is an important factor contributing to carbide formation in the high-Mn and high-Al alloyed austenitic steel, while the carbon and Mn for the low-Mn and high Al alloyed ferritic steel.

  • Due to large in-field current carrying capacity and strong mechanical strength, a REBCO wire has been regarded as a viable high temperature superconductor (HTS) option for high field MRI and > 1 GHz (>23.5 T) NMR magnets. However, a REBCO magnet is well known to have an inherent problem of field inhomogeneity, so-called 'Screening Current induced magnetic Field (SCF)'. Recently, 'field shaking' and 'current overshoot operation' techniques have been successfully demonstrated to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity by experiments. To investigate the effectiveness of current overshooting operation technique, a numerical simulation is conducted for a test REBCO magnet composed of a stack of double pancake coils using '2D edge-element magnetic field formulation' combined with 'domain homogenization' scheme. The simulation result demonstrates that an appropriate amount of current overshoot can negate the SCF. To verify the simulation results, current overshoot experiments are conducted for the REBCO magnet in liquid nitrogen. Experimental results also demonstrate the possible application of current overshoot technique to mitigate the SCF and enhance the field homogeneity.

  • Accurate and consistent characterization of defects in steam generator tubes (SGT) in nuclear power plants is one of the key issues in the field of nondestructive testing since the large number of signals to be analyzed in a time-limited in-service inspection causes a serious problem in practice. This paper presents an effective approach to this difficult task of automated classification of motorized rotating pancake coil (MRPC) eddy current flaw acquired from tube specimens with deliberated defects using deep neural networks (DNN). This approach consists of five steps, namely, the data acquisition using the MRPC probe in the tube, the signal preprocessing to make data more suitable for training DNN, the data augmentation for boosting a training performance, the training of DNN, and finally demonstration of the trained DNN for discriminating the axial and circumferential defects. The high performance obtained in this study shows that DNN is useful for classification of defects in tubes from the MRPC eddy current signals even though the number of signals is very large.

  • A rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) superconducting magnet was designed using no-insulation (NI) and multi-width (MW) winding techniques. The proposed magnet is comprised of 58 REBCO-wound single pancake coils with a bore size of 240 mm. When the magnet is operated at 20 K, the center magnetic flux density is designed to reach 3 T with an operational current of 169.55 A, 70 % of its critical current. The critical current was evaluated using experimental data of a short REBCO conductor sample. The designed magnet was then simulated using FEM software with uniform current density model. Magnetic field and mechanical properties of the magnet are evaluated using the simulated data. This magnet was designed as one of the base designs for the project "Tesla-Level Magnets with Large Bore Sizes for Industrial Applications" which was initiated in 2019, and will be wound using REBCO wires with the defect-irrelevant-winding (DIW) technique incorporated to reduce the overall manufacturing cost.

  • According to the recent design of an HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) power transformer whose capacity is hundreds MVA, the rated current values of the low voltage side are generally over thousands amps. Considering the performance of the recent HTS wires, it is inevitable to use several HTS wires in parallel for large rated current. Lots of stacked HTS wires were fabricated and tested so far, and the results have showed that we have to transpose each wire in order to reduce the AC losses as well as to increase the current capacity. But many development programs about HTS transformers reveal that the transposition of the several wires during the winding process is quite difficult not only in case of the layer windings but also in case of the pancake type ones. So, we need transposed multiple HTS wire which we can handle like single wire or cable for the HTS windings of large capacity power transformer. We fabricated several kinds of samples of multiple HTS wire with transposition to apply it to the HTS windings of power transformer. The electrical characteristics such as critical currents or AC losses are analyzed by experiments in case by case. Finally we present the best design of a multiple HTS wire for power transformer.

  • Many superconductor applications such as MRI and SMES must be operated in persistent current mode to eliminate the electrical ohmic loss. This paper presents the characteristic analysis of the high temperature superconducting (HTS) power supply made of YBCO coated conductor (CC). In this research, we have manufactured the HTS power supply to charge the 0.73 mH HTS double-pancake magnet made of YBCO CC. Among the all design parameters, the heater triggerring time and magnet applying time were the most important factors for the best performance of the HTS power supply. In this paper, three-dimensional simulation through finite element method (FEM) was used to study the heat transfer in YBCO CC and the magnetic field of the magnetic circuit. Based upon these results, the final operational sequence could be determined to generate the pumping current. In the experiment, the maximum pumping current reached about 16 A.

  • To reduce the power loss in normal state, non-inductively wound high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils are used for fault current limiter (FCL) application. Non-inductively wound coils can be classified into two types: solenoid type and pancake type. These two types have different electrical and thermal and mechanical characteristics due to their winding structure difference. This paper deals with the current limiting characteristics, magnetic field analysis of the two coils. Simulation using finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the magnetic field distribution and inductance of the coils. Short circuit test using stabilizer-free coated conductor (CC) was also carried out. We can compare the characteristics of the two types of coil by using the data obtained from simulation and short circuit test. We confirmed the feasibility of FCL application by the analysis about the characteristics of non-inductively wound coil using CC.

  • A magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding which has circular section was developed. At first, the equation for magnetic field by single filament coil was extended using numerical integration to estimate the entire interesting region of solenoid, especially winding region itself. And then, the magnetic field by toroidal arrangement of solenoids was computed with a coordinate transformation of vector fields. The superconducting magnet with toroidal arrangement can be made up of several tens of solenoid type double pancake windings for some applications such as superconducting magnetic energy storage system(SMES). In this system, the field calculation on the high-Tc superconducting(HTS) tape itself is very important because the entire system can be reached to a fault by magnetic stress of conductor or the critical current of superconducting tape can be dramatically reduced under its self field condition. To make matters worse, 3-dimensional analysis is indispensable for this type of magnet and the most of commercial programs with finite element method can be taken too much time for analysis and design. In this paper, a magnetic field calculation method for toroidal type winding with circular section was induced.

  • This paper deals with charging and persistent-current mode operating characteristics of BSCCO magnet load using high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power supply. The HTS power supply consists of two heater-triggered switches, an iron-core transformer with the primary copper winding and the secondary BSCCO solenoid, and a BSCCO magnet load. The magnet load was fabricated by double pancake winding and its inductance is about 21 mH. A hall sensor was installed at the middle of the magnet load to measure the current in the load. In order to investigate the efficient pumping characteristics, operating tests of heater-triggered switch with respect to dc heater current were carried out, and the electromagnet current was determined by considering saturation characteristics of its iron core. The saturation characteristics of charged current in the magnet load were observed with respect to various pumping periods: 12 s, 14 s, 24 s and 32 s. After charging the magnet load, the persistent current was measured. The operating characteristics of the persistent current mode were mainly determined by joint resistance and magnet load.
