  • We examined the state of Korean pomfret(Pampus echinogaster) in Korean waters and considered the management strategy of the stock based on the theory yield Per recruit. It is not facile to discriminate Korean pomfret distributed in Korean waters from silver pomfret (p. argenteus) due to the similarities in their external morphologies. For this rea- son, Korean pomfret has been treated in silver pomfret in fisheries statistics of Korea. In this study, we asserted Korean pomfret from pomfrets caught commercially by the morphology, from which we recognized that Korean pomfret took $60\~70\%$ in catch(in weight) and that the smaller the body length, the higher the proportion of Korean pomfret. Parameters estimated for Korean pomfret were as follows: natural mortality(M) = 0.6, fishing mortality(F) =0.924(mean value for $1986\~1988$), age at recruit to fishery($t_r$) =0.19 yrs, age at first capture($t_c$) : 0.49 yrs, and the rate of recruit of age-0 fish to fishery(Q) = 0.29. The results obtained from the theory of yield per recruit indicated that the present state of stock was below the optimum level of exploitation and that the control of fishing intensity rarely had an effect on the increasing of yield. Accordingly, we conclude that proper management can be made by increasing the current age of 0.49 yrs at first capture to 1.5 yrs.

  • This study assessed dominant fish species, and the characteristics and spatio-temporal distribution of fish schools using acoustic and catch data in the marine ranching area (MRA) of Yeosu in July and August 2013. Acoustic data were collected using a 200-kHz dual beam transducer, and catch data were analyzed through auction data generated by a set net installed in the MRA. More fish schools were detected by acoustic methods in July than in August. The temporal distribution of fish schools differed between July and August, but, many schools demonstrated a high mean volume scattering strength (SV) around artificial reefs. Additionally, the characteristics of fish schools detected by echograms and the species caught by set nets differed between July and August. The dominant fish species were Engraulis japonicus, Pampus argenteus, Scomberomorus niphonius, and Pampus echinogaster in July, and approximately 85% of the catch in August consisted of Scomberomorus niphonius. Therefore, hydro-acoustic tools are useful for estimating fish school characteristics in large areas over a short period. To determine species, it is important to conduct net sampling surveys during the acoustic surveys. However, if a database of fish school characteristics organized by species is constructed through continuous study, it could be possible to identify fish species through acoustic methods alone.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fishes was determined using monthly samples collected by a fyke net in coastal waters off Namhae Island in 2006. The sampling gear, both-side fyke net, is a widely used commercial fishing gear in shallow waters of the region. A total of 89 fish species was collected, the dominant species were Konosirus punctatus, Mugil cephalus, Lateolabrax japonicus, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Sebastes inermis, Nibea mitsukurii, Clupeapallasii, Pampus echinogaster, Sebastes schlegeli and Limanda yokohamae. They accounted for 61.1% of the total number of individuals and 80.3% of the biomass. The dominant species were primarily composed of small individuals or juveniles of large-sized fishes. Abundance in the number of individuals and biomass showed peaks in April, May and September, and was lowest in January. Temporal change in fish abundance was related to the temperature and related factors.

  • For the purpose of the investigation on the selective action of trawl net, a series of fishing experiments carryed out in M. S. Pusan 402 during the years of 1986~1987, by using a set of trawl net with a few pocket nets in each part of the bagnet. The author analyzed these experimental data and derived the following results. 1. 58 species of aquatic animals were caught in totally 43 times of trawl operation and 33 species of them did not escape at all through the barrier of netting in the bagnet. 2. Sardinops melanosticta, Harengula zunasi, Thrisa kamalensis, Englausis japonicus, little size of Tracurus japonicus, Sphyraena pinguis, Trichirus lepturus, and Psenopsis anomala escaped easily through the barrier of netting after being caught inside of the codend. Especially, Englusis japonicus escaped well not only through the netting of the codend but also through the netting of the square and the baiting. 3. In the case of mesh size of 60mm in the codend, Pampus argentus, Doderleinia bercoides and Tracurus japonicus were caught all in the size of less than 10cm.

  • Growth of the Korean pomfret, Pampus echinogaster, captured in the East China Sea from January to December 1987, was estimated by annual rings on the vertebral centrum. The time of annual ring formation was approximately during September and October. Von Ber-talanffy growth equations derived from the mean back-calculated fork length(cm) at each age were as follows: for females, $L_{t}=29.17(1-e xp(-0.3213(t+0.7601)))$, for males, $L_t=28.21(1-e xp(-0.3169(t+0.8284)))$, and for sexes combined, $L_t=29.00(1-e xp(-0.3228(t+0.7361)))$, Seasonal growth equations derived from the mean observed fork length (cm) at age by month were as follows: for females, $L_t=29.2(1-e xp(-0.3458(t+0.8182)+(0.3458/2\pi)sin2\pi(t+0.027)))$, and for males, $L_t=28.2(1-e xp(-0.2789(t+1.5913)+(0.2789/2\pi)sin2\pi(t-0.1062)))$.

  • Basedon statistical data of pomfret (Pampus spp.) catches by the stow net during $1970\~1985$, the distribution and migration of pomfrets and fishing conditions were investigated in relation to oceanographic conditions, in the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. The main fishing grounds of Pomfrets were formed around the Great Yangtze Sand Bank which locates between the Cheju Island and the mouth of the Yangtze River. Its area occupied only 11 percent of all fishing grounds, and about 70 percent of total catch was found there. The coefficient of variation(CV) in catch was below 0.01 in the whole fishing grounds and that of tile main fishing grounds (14 fishing areas) was $0.001\~0.003$. This area was indicated markedly by the inflow of Yellow Sea Warm Current from spring to autumn, and this mixing area which formed the oceanic front among the China Continental Shelf Water, the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water and the Tsushima Warm Current. The pomfrets migrates to south-north according to the expansion and contraction of the Tsushima Warm Current including the Yellow Sea Warm Current and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water. Therefore, it migrates to north of the Yellow Sea in summer and to southern part of the East China Sea in winter. The most frequent range of the water type for high catch was $10\~12^{\circ}C$ in temperature and $32.4\~33.4\%_{circ}$ in salinity. The ranges was occupied more than 70 percent of total catch on fishing season. The frequency range of the water type was not different between the abundant fishing periods and the poor fishing periods in terms of the maximum catches.
