Choosing to See: A Framework for Equity in the Math Classroom is a book intended to be a practical tool for teachers to build empowering mathematics classrooms for their students from marginalized groups. Pamela Seda and Kyndall Brown provide concrete guidance using seven key principles, the ICUCARE (pronounced "I See You Care") Equity Framework, to provide a pathway for teachers for how to meaningfully make their classrooms a more equitable space for all students.

The epistolary novel, as developed and refined by Samuel Richardson (1689-1761), is concerned with distinctly private experience and the morality of individuals-Richardson's heroine writers. In contrast to nineteenth-century novels, which explore their subjects through the overview of a narrator with a singular moral outlook, the epistolary narrative allows Richardson to examine the various different ways in which individuals/heroines interpret, mold, and respond to their experiences in writing. In this paper, I argue that the authorial voice of Richardson does not control the narrative but rather is present in the prefaces, character sketches, notes and occasional interjections between letters. Although there is little doubt as to whether Richardson intended to make a particular moral point or attempted to control the effect of his novels on his readers, the heroines and their letters dominate the novels so that they put the authorial suggestions in a different light, reducing the author's to one voice among several. Thus, Pamela's letters are exemplary for the vigor and intelligence with which they appear to be written, rather than for the imposed morality of their ghost writer-Richardson. Although Clarissa is of a different social class from Pamela, both heroines are united in their oppression as victims of a patriarchal society. In Clarissa's letters, the heroine's situation and experience are seen through her own writing in dialogue with that of her confidante Anna Howe, and in contrast to the writing of her oppressors. Clarissa, then, becomes a struggle between different discourses in which their genesis and effect, and the societies and individuals from which they come are implicitly suggested in Richardson's text. While Richardson may or may not be guilty of taking the writing of women and using it for his own ends, his epistolary novels represent a deliberate and bold attempt to shape the novel in a way conducive to his heroines and to women writers.

Sound nutrition is the basic foundation for the health of a population. Proper nutrition education through the school system can actualize the building of sound nutrition being provided at school lunch programs along with nutrition education can have far reaching impact to the health of the whole nation. In Hong Kong, the recent change over from a half day to full day school program signaled the need for a school lunch program. However, there has been no organized effort so far in Hong Kong to provide such service. School lunches are being provided by caterers who are more concerned about profits than food safetly. Alarming rates of food poisoning occurring recently in Taiwan school has further accentuated the importance of fool safety. With the advent of centralized food production technologies, Dietirians can apply their nutrition knowledge and integrate with food production processes such that safe, healthy and nutritious mcals can be produced in large quantities in a cost-effective manner serving he needs of the school children. This paper introduces the centralized food production concept, using some of the cool chill production centers for school lunch programs in the United States as examples to discuss how new technologies and management system can be integrated to yield the best outcome in food quality and safety.

The studies of correspondence between novel and nation-state, among which The Rise of the Novel by Ian Watt is supposed to be the first book, have flourished for more than twenty years, encouraged by Benedict Anderson's and Cathy Davidson's works. According to them, the novel should come simultaneously with, or after the foundation of the nation-state, and testify to its production or the emergence of its subject/citizen. This paper questions about these prepositions, trying to introduce a new paradigmatical approach, "between global and transnational historical approach," to first novels in transatlantic areas including England and atlantic coastal areas. In its complex relation to a variety of colonial, post-colonial, and transnational geopolitics, various cultural practices such as history, traveler's tales and epistolary novels can be included in the genre of the novel. The idea of the sexual contract by Carole Pateman is very useful because it helps more clearly understand the nature of relation between men and women in the capitalist reproduction, while the social contract tells about the relation between men as citizens. Unlike Freud in Totem and Taboo, Zilboorg argues that there were primordial and violent scenes such as rape before the first sexual contract. This paper will illuminate that "the rise of the novel" corresponded with the emergence of the sexual contract. In the so-called first novel Pamela, the heroine Pamela was threatened to be violated by Mr. B., and was really even confined in his cottage. Mary Rowlandson's The Captive Narrative shows that her body was confined as an English female captive, and troubled with imaginary rape by Indians which resulted in the unequal sexual contract between her and her puritan community in America. However, Leonora Sansay's Secret History in an alternative communality, which was not a nation-state, was different from both novels mentioned above, in that it shows the possibility of emancipation from their unequal marriage, the sexual contract. Therefore, it can be argued that "between global and transnational historical approach" has a possibility to provide a new vision of global sisterhood and solidarity to recognize globalized women's violence, and free themselves from the unequal sexual contract.

Previous research on healthcare workers’ protection has concentrated on liquid barrier protection by providing impermeable personal articles such as latex gloves. This property is of high importance but since most blood-borne pathogen transmissions in the healthcare industry are caused by needle-stick injuries, protection from sharp invasive instruments should also be of high concern. And since latex and alike provide no protection against needle-stick injuries, new protective systems need to be developed and evaluated. This part of the study provides a review regarding the current practice of protection and the serious problems that arise from needle-flick injuries. Additionally, the development of new protective system is described. In part II of the study, evaluation of the new system will be provided.

The regulators of the G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are responsible for the rapid acceleration of the GTPase-activity intrinsic to the heterotrimeric G protein alpha subunits. As GTPase-activating proteins (GAP), the RGS proteins negatively regulate the G-protein signals. Recently, the RGS proteins are known to be one of the important regulators of opioid signal transduction and the development of tolerance. The aim of this study was to review the recent discovery and understanding of the role of RGS proteins in opioid signaling and the development of tolerance. This information will be useful for medical personnel, particularly those involved in anesthesia and pain medicine, by helping them improve the effective use of opioids and develop new drugs that can prevent opioid tolerance.

We study the dust and star-formation characteristics of a nearby dwarf elliptical galaxy, NGC 855. With various archival data from ultraviolet to far-infrared, we build up the spectral energy distribution (SED) that can give us constraints on stellar populations, dust characteristics, star-formation history, etc. From GALEX and SDSS data, slightly de-centered bluer central core is confirmed, where star formation might take place. This regions is coincident with seemingly dis-integrated cores detected by Spitzer IRAC data and with bright Ha feature observed at ground-based telescope. The PACS and SPIRE data by Herschel Space Observatory show the dominant dust features at the center. Lastly, we propose necessary follow-up observations with ground-based telescopes to investigate spectral properties of NGC 855.

A musical key is a fundamental concept in Western music theory. It is a collective characterization of pitches and chords that together create a musical perception of the entire piece. It is based on a group of pitches in a scale with which a music is constructed. Each key specifies the set of seven primary chromatic notes that are used out of the twelve possible notes. This paper presents a method that identifies the key of a song using Hidden Markov Models given a sequence of chroma features. Given an input song, a sequence of chroma features are computed. It is then classified into one of the 24 keys using a discrete Hidden Markov Models. The proposed method can help musicians and disc-jockeys in mixing a segment of tracks to create a medley. When tested on 120 songs, the success rate of the music key identification reached around 87.5%.
