  • A simple dry chemical approach was developed in order to load palladium (Pd) as a promoter on Pt/gas diffusion electrode (GDE) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Palladium(II) bis (acetylacetonate), $Pd(acac)_2$ was sublimed, penetrated into Pt/GDE and then reduced to Pd nanoparticles simultaneously without any reducing agent and any solvent in a glass reactor of $N_2$ atmosphere at $180^{\circ}C$ for 3, 5 and 15 min. Pd distribution was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and I-V curve was estimated by using a unit cell with $5{\times}5cm^2$ active area.

  • In order to investigate the biocompatibility of silver-palladium alloys, gingival fibroblast was obtained from a healthy human gingival and cultured in MEM medium with the addition of silverpalladium alloys. Four different mixture of silver-palladium alloys comprising of Ag-Pd-Au, Ag-Pd-In and Ag-Sn were tested. Results were assessed by calculating the cell multiplication rate per millimeter of medium and morphological changes in cells were also observed and noted. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Ag-Pd-Au alloy was indicated to be most biocompatible with gingival fibroblast. Also there was a decrease in cytotoxicity of the alloy as the concentration of gold increased. 2. Ag-Pd alloy showed a decrease in cell multiplication rate as compared to Ag-Pd~Au alloy. 3. Silver-palladium alloy supplemented with Indium increased the cell multiplication rate. 4. Among the alloys tested, Ag-Sn alloy was indicated to be the most cytotoxic and the least biocompatible with human gingival fibroblast.

  • Polyurethane foam impregnated with ${\beta}$-diphenylglyoxime has been applied to the extraction of palladium(II) from platinum(IV) and nickel(II) in aqueous solution. Palladium(II) is quantitatively extracted from $0.01{sim}0.05M$ HCl. On the other hand, platinum(Ⅳ) was slightly extracted and nickel(II) was not found to be extraction in the same experimental condition. Based on the results obtained, the selective separation, removal and recovery of Pd(II) from Pt(IV) or Ni(II) was possible by batch or elution method.

  • This paper describes the development of a glucose biosensor based on ion sensitive field effect transistor(ISFET) with a palladium(Pd) modified ion sensing membrane. By adopting Pd as a hydrogen sensitive layer and integrating a screen-printed reference electrode, the sensitivity and stability were considerably improved due to the high permeability and selectivity of the Pd hydrogen selective membrane. This paper suggests a new approach for realizing portable and highly sensitive glucose sensors for diagnosing and treating diabetes mellitus.

  • EPIG (Electroless Pd/immersion Au) process was studied to replace ENIG (electroless Ni/immersion Au) and ENEPIG (electroless Ni/electroless Pd/immersion Au) processes for bump surface treatment used in high reliable flip chip packages. The palladium and gold layers formed by EPIG process were uniform with thickness of 125 nm and 34.5 nm, respectively. EPAG (Electroless Pd/autocatalytic Au) also produced even layers of palladium and gold with the thickness of 115 nm and 100 nm. TEM results exhibited that the gold layer in EPIG surface had crystalline structure while the palladium layer was amorphous one. After annealing at 250 nm, XPS analysis indicated that the palladium layer with thickness more than 22~33 nm could act as a diffusion barrier of copper interconnects. As a result of comparing the chip shear strength obtained from ENIG and EPIG surfaces, it was confirmed that the bonding strength was similar each other as 12.337 kg and 12.330 kg, respectively.

  • Aromatic polyamides and polyesters with fexible spacers are prepared by Heck reaction with palladium catalysts In presence of carbon monoxide gas. Dichlorobis(triphenyl phosphine) plladium(II) ($PdCl_2(PPh_3)_2$) and palladium chloride ($PbCl_2$) are used as catalysts. Polyamides and polyesters prepared by his polymerization system have similar transition temperatures. Flexible spacer substituted on phenylene units are varied from hexyl to hexadecyl, the length of spacers effected on transition temperatures of substituted polymers.

  • The dechlorination of chlorinated methanes by iron powder and palladium coated iron (Pd/Fe) was studied in batch experiments. Iron powder dechlorinated carbon tetrachloride (CT) with a half-life of 4 days. Three chloromethane was found as major product and less chlorinated daughters. Mass balance found was to be about 93-99%. Pd/Fe showed very enhanced reactivity for CT in comparing with plain iron. The major dechlorination products of CT were also less chlorinated methanes with Pd/Fe. Pd/Fe also degrade the produced less chlorinated compounds. Sequential reactions were occurred on Pd/Fe. As the Pd/Fe content increased, the reaction rate was increased linearly.

  • We have developed an efficient method to generate highly active Pd and PdO nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed on graphene and graphene oxide (GO) by an impregnation method combined with thermal treatments in $H_2$ and $O_2$ gas flows, respectively. The Pd NPs supported on graphene (Pd/G) and the PdO NPs supported on GO (PdO/GO) demonstrated excellent carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions under a solvent-free, environmentally-friendly condition. The morphological and chemical structures of PdO/GO and Pd/G were fully characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that the remarkable reactivity of the Pd/G and PdO/GO catalysts toward the cross-coupling reaction is attributed to the high degree of dispersion of the Pd and PdO NPs while the oxidative states of Pd and the oxygen functionalities of graphene oxide are not critical for their catalytic performance.

  • Graphene (G) has been modified with palladium, copper, and manganese oxide nanoparticles (NPs), and their catalytic applications have been studied in C-C coupling reactions and methylmercaptan (CH3SH) decomposition reactions. In this research, graphite oxide (GO) sheets were exfoliated and oxidized from graphite powder and impregnated with metal precursors including Pd2+, Cu2+, and Mn2+. The thermal treatments of the metal impregnated GO in preferred gas environments produced Pd NPs on graphene (Pd/G), PdO NPs on GO (PdO/GO), and CuOx and MnOx NPs on graphene (CuOx/MnOx/G). In case of Pd/G and PdO/GO, the TEM images show that, although the mean size of the Pd NPs changed significantly before and after the C-C coupling reaction, that of the PdO NPs didn't, implying that the PdO/GO was superior to Pd/G in terms of the recyclability. Also, we demonstrate that the CuOx/MnOx/G exerts the excellent catalytic efficiency in CH3SH decomposition reaction comparing with conventional catalysts. The chemical and electronic structural changes were investigated using XRD and XPS.

  • Highly conductive yarn was successfully obtained using electroless nickel plating method with palladium activation. In the presence of palladium seed on surface of fibers as a catalyst, continuos nickel layer produced on surface of fibers by reducing $Ni${2+}$ ion in the electroless plating bath to $Ni^0$. It was found that the Pd-activation using $SnCl_2$ and $PdCl_2$ to deposit palladium seeds on the surface of fibers plays a key role in the subsequent electroless plating of nickel. It also found that electroless nickel plating on the fibers can induce the nickel-plated $ELEX^{(R)}$ fibers to improve the electrical conductivity of the fibers. The thickness of nickel coating layer on the Pd-activated $ELEX^{(R)}$ fibers and specific conductivity of the fiber were increased through electroless plating time. The temperature of nickel plating bath was very effective to enhance the nickel deposition rate.
