  • An unsteady flow model is developed that allows variable roughness coefficient for each computational point according to its spatial position and the discharge. A step function or a power function can be used for functional relation between the discharge and the Manning's roughness coefficient. The model is applied to the reach of the South Han River between the Chungju Dam and Paldang Dam, and model parameters are estimated by optimization. Estimated parameters of both the step function model and the Power function model show that Manning's roughness coefficient decreases as the discharge increases. This tendency is more noticeable for the upstream reach of Yeoju compared to the downstream reach. It turns out that the stages calculated by the variable roughness coefficient model agree better with the observed ones than those by the conventional fixed parameter model.

  • The Objective of this study was to develop a system for visualizing inundation area by using 1-D numerical model analyzing damage information such as inundation area, facilities, land usages, population, building, loads. In this study, we have reviewed hydraulic models to select a flood model for simulation of discharges, water depths and velocities. The study area is Namhan River from Youngwol to Paldang Dam which had a flood damage on upper and below regions of Chungju Dam by a storm event in 2006. At the first, we developed the DB system base on GIS thematic map, ortho images, cadastral maps to analyze flood damages and support decisions making. Changing the boundary conditions such as discharge at the gauging stations, flood simulations were performed and then damages were extracted from the databases information support system based on 1-D numerical hydraulic model, it is expected to be able to analyze flood damages and support a decision making for reduce flood relate damages. In the future, the system developed in this study could be applied for flood forecasting system of small scaled streams.

  • This study analyzed the distribution, diversity, and density variation of algal clusters in a freshwater reservoir from an oceanic island and a traditional inland water system to gain insights on future marine freshwater resource management. In the Paldang water system (Han River), despite the upstream Paldang Dam and the downstream Jamsil underwater reservoir being in the same meteorological zone, their algae density patterns varied inversely. The distinct algal cluster structure (diversity/dominance) of Paldang was altered in the downstream reservoir, suggesting that physical devices aid algae management in traditional water systems. In contrast, 24 out of 35 genera (63.2%) identified in the Jeolgol Reservoir (Baeknyeong Island) were unique, lacking regulatory mechanisms, and existing in a complex ecotone. The desmid Chlorophyceae Cosmarium, adapted to higher photosynthetic stress and low temperatures, dominated in January (38.04%) and August (86.45%) during the periods of extreme photosynthetic stress. Jeolgol's annual algal cluster structure (H' 2.097; D 0.259; S' 35) demonstrated higher stability than Paldang (H' 1.125; D 0.448; S' 13) and the Jamsil underwater reservoir (H' 1.078; D 0.469; S' 12), maintaining an H' above 1.5 even during midwinters. No evidence of TN/TP inflow from surrounding soils was observed, even during torrential rainfalls, with phosphorus being the limiting factor for algal growth. TOC, BOD, chlorophyll-a, and turbidity peaked during Cosmarium bloom. Future climate change is expected to cause fluctuations in algal clusters and related water quality factors. The complex transitional nature of the Jeolgol Reservoir, its algal diversity, and the interspecies interactions contribute to the high stability of its algal community.

  • Instream flows are defined as the stream flows needed to protect and preserve instream resources and values. They are supplied by the essential discharge for maintaining the channel. However, due to the lack of precipitation during the dry season, which is usually between the months of January and April, natural flows are not enough for the instream flows, thus leaving the dams at a shortage. In this paper, the method which will be discussed will show a physical way to improve water quality by the dilution of water that is supplied from a reservoir or dam, and how it is analyzed at the Han River basin. For the sake of this analysis, the basin has been divided into 33 catchments. Each catchment's natural flow has been simulated by SWAT-K, and the future water demand has been estimated using statistical data. It has also been assumed that the Han River basin has two large reservoirs(Chung-ju dam, and So-yang dam). The supply of potential discharge has been calculated using a case of water separately from each dam, as well as supply water from both dams.

  • This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs and compare the land use changes of inland along the stream. For the Gyeong-an national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 was selected and ortho photograph was made with RMSE of 1.25, 0.54, 0.72 pixels, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream width widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974.

  • This study is to trace the change of stream shape using the past series of aerial photographs, and to compare the land use changes of riparian area along the stream. For the Gyeongan national stream, aerial photographs of 1966, 1981 and 2000 were selected and ortho photographs were made with interior orientation and exterior orientation, respectively. As apparent changes of the stream, the consolidated reaches of stream with levee construction were straightened and their stream widths were widened. Especially the stream width of inlet part of Paldang lake was widened almost twice because of the rise of water level by dam construction in 1974. The land use maps (1966, 1981,2000) of riparian areas were also made, respectively and classified into 6 categories (water, forest, agricultural land, urban area, road, sandbar) by digitizing. The area of forest and agricultural land decreased and urban area increased as the stream maintenance was performed.

  • Recently, as water pollution accidents in rivers have increased, there is an increased interest in water quality forecast with accurate simulation. QUAL2E model, widely used for water quality analysis, uses the same hydraulic characteristics, such as depth and velocity, in a reach. The flow of the river is changed by various hydraulic constructions or by topography in a real river channel. In this study, a hydraulic connection module is developed to consider flow variations of river channels in QUAL2E model. The module uses the simulations results of non-uniform flow of a 1-D hydraulic model such as DWOPER or HEC-RAS. The improved QUAL2E model with this module was applied to a downstream section of Paldang Dam on the Han River. The results show the variation of water quality very well in a reach where flowing vary abruptly, like the Jamsil submerged weir.
