  • Pagurus undosus and Pagurus parvispina, collected from the East Sea by fishery trap, are newly recorded from Korean waters. Pagurus undosus is distinguished from other hermit crab by its right cheliped slightly elevated medially, and with broad ridge formed by deep depressions mesial and lateral to midline. Pagurus parvispina is distinguished from other hermit crab by its right cheliped covered with large spine and long tufts of setae. These species live in cold water areas and their geographical distribution is extended southwardly by the present study. A specimen of the former species, P. undosus, was found living in a shelter formed by a sponge, similar to that observed in Pagurus pectinatus. Descriptions and figures of these two species are provided in this paper. Currently, 27 species of the genus Pagurus are recorded in Korean fauna.

  • Thirteen decapod crustaceans of Dokdo Island were identified and classified based on samples collected around Dokdo Island from May 1999 to November 2004. Of the 13 species, 7 were unrecorded from Dokdo Island: Axiopsis princeps, Pagurus angustus, Pagurus japonicus, Pagurus nigrivittatus, Pagurus spina, Portunus trituberculatus, and Hemigrapsus penicillatus. Of these 7 species, Pagurus nigrivittatus and Pagurus spina were new to the Korean decapod fauna. However, P. spina was only reported as the type series from the Pacific coast of northern Japan. Its geographic range now extends to the East Sea. To date, 25 decapod crustaceans (1 caridean, 1 thalassinidean, 11 anomurans, and 12 brachyurans) have been reported from Dokdo Island.

  • The first zoeal stage of Pagurus japonicus is described and illustrated. Its morphological characteristics are compared with of other species of the genus Pagurus. The first zoea of P. japonicus was very similar to that of P. similis. The zoeas of the two species could be distinguished from other pagurid zoeas by morphological characteristics of the carapace without posterolateral spine. two setae on the endopod of the antenna, and 3+3 setae on the endopod of the maxilla. They show affinities more to the species of the family Diogenidae than to the species of the genus Pagurus in respect of zoeal morphology.

  • A pagurid crab, Pagurus erythrogrammus is described and illustrated for the first time from Korean waters. It was collected by SCUBA diving in Seogwipo (Jejudo Island) on 30 May 2013. Its morphology is similar to those of known Korean species of the family Paguridae: Boninpagurus pilosipes, Pagurus nigrivittatus, and Pagurus quinquelineatus. This species, however, it is distinguished by having a developed rostrum, seven rows of spines on dorsal surface of the right palm in male, a row of spines on the medial surface of the dactylus of the third pereopod, 12 long ventral spines of dactylus of the third pereopod, six small spines on the concaved distal margin of telson, and three reddish brown lines on lateral surfaces of propodi of the second and third pereopods.

  • Two pagurid hermit crabs of the genus Pagurus, P. proximus Komai, 2000 and P. simulans Komai, 2000, were collected from the East Sea of Korea are reported. Brief descriptions and illustrations of these two species are provided. Both have been confounded with P. brachiomastus (Thallwitz, 1891) until recently Komai (2000a) reviewed the taxonomic status of this species complex. Kim's (1973) record of P. brachiomastus from Korea was synonymized to P. proximus by Komai (2000a) and the latter in Korean waters is confirmed through this study. P. simulans is recorded for the first time from Korea as well as the East Sea (Sea of Japan).

  • A pagurid hermit crab, Pagurus rathbuni that was collected from the deep water of the East Sea, Korea, has been newly recorded in the Korean fauna. The present record extends the geographic distribution of the species to Korean waters in the East Sea and extends the bathymetric range to 500 m. Morphological and distributional accounts of this species are presented with illustrations.

  • Pagurus is the most diverse hermit crab genus in Korea. In this study, the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S rRNA of 24 individuals from four Korean Pagurus species (i.e., 7 Pagurus brachiomastus, 8 P. proximus, 8 P. simulans, and 1 P. rectidactylus) were sequenced and analyzed. No genetic difference was found between the COI and 16S rRNA sequences of P. brachiomastus and P. simulans, and the COI sequences of P. rectidactylus and P. quinquelineatus (comparative species from NCBI). Considering the morphological and ecological characteristics together, we assume that P. simulans and P. rectidactylus are subspecies of P. brachiomastus and P. quinquelineatus, respectively. This study should facilitate further research on the taxonomic status of these species.

  • Two species of the family Porcellidiidae associated with hermit crabs are described from Korean seas. These are Porcellidium similis, new species collected from Pagurus similis, Pagurus pectinatus and Porcellidium brevicaudatum Kicks & Webber collected from Dardanus impressus. The new species resemble closely Porcellidium brevicaudatum in general body form, but is clearly distinguished from Porcellidium vrevicaudatum in that the caudal ramus is weakly oblique in tis distal border and the lobe of leg 5 is more slender.
