Current Status of Legal Regulations Regarding Gas- and Moisture-removing Active Packaging for Food: A Review (식품용 가스 및 수분 제거 활성포장 사용 및 법정 규정에 대한 현황)

  • Due to the increasing consumer demands for the safety, shelf life, and quality of food, the application and development of active packaging in the food and packaging industry have been improved. According to the standards and specifications of the Republic of Korea for utensils, containers, and packages, the function of active packaging is to remove or alleviate factors that degrade food quality. Although extensive reviews regarding the development and commercialization of active packaging have been conducted, the legal regulations and safety assessments concerning active packaging have rarely been examined. This review provides information regarding the definition, structure, components, operational mechanisms, and applications for active packaging that actively removes oxygen, moisture, carbon dioxide, and ethylene. Furthermore, the legal regulations and research results related to the development of test methods for safety assessments of active packaging are investigated.

  • The main function of plastic materials in food packaging is to preserve a food for safe transportation and storage. The interactions between food and plastic materials in food packaging have become increasingly important for food quality and safety because monomer, low molecular weight components, or additives of plastic packaging materials can migrate into a food. The use of antioxidants in plastic materials can help protect the degradation of film itself and retard the oxidation of a packaged food containing lipid, through the migration of antioxidant from the packaging to a product via an evaporation / sorption mechanism. Nowadays, antioxidant (BHT) impregnated plastic materials are used for commercial food packaging application with the intention of achieving an extended shelf life of food in USA. Alpha tocopherol, as one of the most important free radical scavengers, has been well known in biological systems. Moreover, the potential use of alpha tocopherol as an additive for polymers used in the packaging industry may offer the most positive perception from both consumers and manufacturers. Alpha tocopherol has been used as an antioxidant for polyolefin resins fabricated to both bottles and film and has applications in the food packaging industry as a replacement for BHT. Today, alpha tocopherol offers an attractive choice for use as an antioxidant in polymers. This paper provides an overview of antioxidant effectiveness and applications for its use by the food packaging industry based on the evaporation-sorption mechanism of a packaging model product, where quality is associated with lipid oxidation. Important analytical techniques for predicting antioxidant interaction between the package system and product are discussed.

Development of Thin, Transparent Oxo-Biodegradable Film with Antibacterial and Freshness Agent (항균, 신선도 기능을 부여한 투명 산화생분해 필름 개발)

  • This article described the development of transparent antimicrobial oxo-biodegradable (AOB) film with the function of enhanced freshness of food by employing oxo-biodegradable masterbatch (MB) and antimicrobial MB together with organic metal salt, organic acid, or unsaturated fatty acid. Antibacterial test of the AOB film with the different contents of the antimicrobial MB resulted in the significant freshness extension of plum. Tensile strength and elongation rate of the AOB films before UV treatment were similar to those of polyethylene films used as control. The reduced mechanical properties of AOB film after UV treatment (340 nm) suggested that the AOB film could be degraded by oxo biodegradation. The developed AOB films can effectively prevent decomposition of food by providing antibacterial function and preserving freshness.

Kinetic Analyses on Thermal Degradation of Epoxy Based Adhesive for Packaging Application (센서 패키지용 고분자 접착제의 열화 거동 분석)

  • An analysis of thermal degradation of epoxy based adhesive performed by thermogravimetry tests are presented in this study. Six different heating rates were employed for the weight change measurements. Based on the data, an Arrhenius type modeling equation was developed by calculating activation energies and proportional constants, and $n^{th}$ polynomial function was adopted to predict the weight change rates. The prediction results by the modeling was compared with the data using the average activation energy. It was found that the activation energy at the each heating rate was not same due to the different degradation kinetics, especially at the high heating rate. To overcome this pitfall, a new approach using exponential function series was introduced and employed. The calculation results showed very good agreements with the test data regardless of the heating rates.

Use-friendly Active Packaging of Powdered Infant Formula in Single-serve Portion Augmented with Anti-oxidative Function (산화억제 가능성과 사용편의성을 가진 일회성 조제분유 포장)

  • In the modified atmosphere packaging of powdered infant formula, the oxygen inside the package may cause its quality deterioration and needs to be minimized for quality preservation. A way of oxygen scavenger inclusion in the single-serve package without contacting the product was devised for removing oxygen residing initially and permeating through the seal layer during the storage. A polyethylene/pulp multi-layer porous filter bag of 5 × 7 cm containing 13 g of powdered infant formula was packaged in an 8 × 9 cm size aluminium laminated film package with a Fe-based oxygen scavenger of 1.8 g. After nitrogen flushed packaging, the active packages were stored at 30℃ for 254 days with periodical quality measurement. The active package could remove the initial residual oxygen of 1.4% completely and maintain absence of oxygen for the whole storage, which contributed to reduced oxidation observed in lower product peroxide value compared to that of the product in the control package. There was no influence of packaging treatment on content of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, reaction product of initial nonenzymatic browning. The devised oxygen-scavenging single-serve package showed a potential to improve the preservation of infant formula powder and extend the shelf life.

  • Exfoliated graphite (EFG) with high aspect ratio was incorporated with high density polyethylene (HDPE) for use as high barrier packaging material such as water-sensitivity electric product and pharmaceutical packaging. Also HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were prepared by adding the compatibilizer for effective dispersion and compatibility. Their chemical properties, crystal structure properties, thermal properties and water barrier properties of as-prepared HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were investigated as a function of EFG contents. It showed that there is a weak interfacial interaction between HDPE and EFG, however, the water vapor permeations were decreased from 127 to 78 (70 ${\mu}m{\cdot}g/m^2$, $day{\cdot}atm$) by addition of EFG. Especially, the physical properties of HDPE/EFG nanocomposite films were effectively increased up to 0.5 wt%, however, there were no significant improvement of properties in nanocomposite films at the additional EFG loading. To maximize their performance of the nanocomposite films, further research is required to enhance the dispersion of EFG and compatibility of EFG in HDPE matrix.

Effect of Food Simulants on the Properties of LDPE-Nano TiO2 Composite Film in Food Contact Environment (식품 접촉 모사 환경에서 식품유사용매의 LDPE-나노 TiO2 복합필름 재질특성 영향 평가)

  • The effect of food simulants on properties and light barrier function of LDPE-nano $TiO_2$ composite film has been investigated. LDPE-nano $TiO_2$ composite films were prepared with 5.0wt% $TiO_2$ content by melt-extrusion. To simulate food contact environment, according to KFDA standards and specifications for food utensils, containers and packages, food simulants were selected with deionized water, 50% ethanol, 4% acetic acid and n-heptane and composite films were immersed in each food simulant at $70^{\circ}C$, 30 min except n-heptane ($25^{\circ}C$, 60 min). A variety of material properties, including crystallinity, chemical bonds, surface morphology, mechanical, oxygen barrier and optical properties, of LDPE-nano $TiO_2$ composite film were examined with and without the food simulants treatment. As a result, under regulated migration condition, LDPE-nano $TiO_2$ composite showed extremely stable in all properties tested in the study in contact with food simulants indicating that $TiO_2$ nanoparticles are physicochemically stable and quite compatible with LDPE. Results enable us to anticipate migration of $TiO_2$ will probably not occur. To evaluate influence of migration of $TiO_2$ on food stuffs, their color, pH and acidity were observed as well.

Development and Application of Multi-Function Valve to Solve Major Problems of Expansion and Off-Odor Leakage in the Packaging of Kimchi

  • The one-way gas valve developed in this study was designed to prevent the breakage of packages from increased internal pressure, which is a problem in packaged Kimchi, and simultaneously reduce the outflow of the offodor release. The effect of the one-way gas valve on the headspace atmospheric compositions was investigated in the packaging system. The changes of atmospheric compositions and quality factors of Kimchi, such as $CO_2$ accumulation, pH, titratable acidity, and salinity, were measured during a 4-week storage period at $4^{\circ}C$. The Kimchi package with the one-way gas valve dramatically reduced pressure build-up in the pouch by allowing the controlled flow of gas to the atmosphere. In addition, the package design allows the possibility of controlling the gas generated from Kimchi by adjusting the viscosity of the open pressure control oil. The one-way gas valve did not affect the sensory characteristics of Kimchi products during the storage period. Furthermore, the deodorizing capability of the activated carbon contained in the one-way gas valve effectively reduced the off-odor of Kimchi products released along with carbon dioxide. The novel one-way gas valve is considered to be an active packaging system that can solve major problems of expansion and off-odor leakage in the packaging of Kimchi.

Measurements and Analysis of Truck Transport Vibration Characteristics on the Gyungbu and 88 Highway (경부고속도로와 88고속도로에 대한 트럭수송시의 진동 특성 측정 및 분석 연구)

  • Measurements of accelerometer levels transmitted from the floor in commercials truck shipments were carried out transportation of 300 Kg-load from Gyungbu Highway(Waegouan-Seoul) to 88 Highway(Gwangju-Daegu). Different characteristics were observed the values measured the vibration levels with directions in the two Highway's as a function of road condition and truck speed. The results showed that the vibration levels of the Gyungbu Highway is much higher than those of the 88 Highway. A following analysis on the obtained values was used to get the acceleration spectral density (ASD) and power spectral density (PSD). For the entire transit route, the results showed that the level of vibration to vertical direction was significant effects for damaging the products carried compared to other directions such as longitudinal and transverse. This paper provides an updated history of measured characteristics of vibration levels for highways using mainly in domestic area.

Fabrication and Packaging of Planar Waveguide Brags Grating (평판도파로 브래그격자 제조 및 접속)

  • Computer code was developed to design waveguide gratings based on coupled-mode equations and the transfer matrix formalism. The experimental set-up has been constructed for inscribing Bragg gratings in planar waveguides with a phase mask and uv laser beam, which enables alignment and packaging of grating devices as well as in-situ performance measurements. Bragg grating has been fabricated on silica planar waveguides with 0.75% Germanium concentration and its transmittance spectrum was measured to have 95% reflectance at the peak wavelength. Optical losses as the function of the misalignment were measured and their usage is described.
