A Master Packaging System for Preserving Qualities of Peaches in the Fresh Produce Supply Chain (농산물 유통과정에서 복숭아의 품질유지를 위한 마스터 포장 시스템)

  • A packaging system integrated in primary and secondary packages to deliver consumers fresh peach in the produce supply chain was designed and its effectiveness on quality preservation was tested. The master packaging system was designed to contain 6 individual polypropylene film (PP, $30{\mu}m$ thickness) packages of 300 g peach fruit inside $35{\mu}m$ thick low density polyethylene (LDPE) bag located in a corrugated paperboard box. As a variable to attain the desired package atmosphere around the fruit during cold storage and subsequent retail display at higher temperature, different numbers (1, 3 and 7) of microperforations in $59{\mu}m$ diameter were tested on the individual PP packages. As control treatment, six fruits were placed without wrapping in a corrugated paperboard box. During the storage at $5^{\circ}C$, the control and individual packages were periodically separated from the box or master package, moved to the simulated retail shelf conditions of $20^{\circ}C$ and then stored for 3 more days with package atmosphere and fruit quality being measured. The package with 7 microperforations was the best in the ability to attain beneficial MA of 6~10% $O_2$ and 11~19% $CO_2$ around the fruit during the chilled storage at $5^{\circ}C$ and simulated retail display at $20^{\circ}C$. Packages with smaller number of microperforations resulted in anaerobic atmosphere at the low temperature storage and/or the subsequent high temperature display. Compared to control, all the treatments with master packaging system gave better retention of fruit firmness with significantly less weight loss.

  • Powdered infant formula is susceptible to oxidation in the presence of oxygen. Even though the product is usually packaged in nitrogen atmosphere, the oxygen ingress through the package layer may occur in case of flexible pouches and affects the oxidation of the product. $O_2$ barrier of the package is thus important variable to protect the product from oxidative deterioration. $O_2$ barrier property was investigated for aluminum-laminated small pillow packs of $3.5{\times}17.5cm$. Storage temperature and combination of primary and secondary packages were evaluated as variables affecting the barrier for conditions of empty pouch flushed with nitrogen. Apparent oxygen transmission rate of the primary package exposed to air was $2.32{\times}10^{-3}mL\;(STP)\;atm^{-1}\;d^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and its temperature dependence could be explained by activation energy of $28.5kJ\;mol^{-1}$ in Arrhenius relationship. The additional secondary package of nylon/PE film containing 20 primary packages was ineffective in modulating package $O_2$ transmission and was only marginally helpful when combined with oxygen scavenger. The same was true in suppressing the product oxidation when the primary package was filled with 14 g of the formula.

  • A data simulator and reduction package for the Devasthal Optical Telescope Integral Field Spectrograph (DOTIFS) has been developed. Since data reduction for the Integral Field Spectrograph (IFS) requires complicated procedures due to the complex nature of the integral spectrograph, common reduction procedures are usually not directly applicable for such an instrument. Therefore, the development of an optimized package for the DOTIFS is required. The data simulator observes artificial object and simulates CCD images for the instrument considering various effects; e.g. atmosphere, sky background, transmission, spectrograph optics aberration, and detector noise. The data reduction package has been developed based on the outcomes from the DOTIFS data simulator. The reduction package includes the entire processes for the reduction; pre-processing, flat-fielding, and sky subtraction. It generates 3D data cubes as a final product, which users can use for science directly.

Package Atmosphere and Quality as Affected by Modified Atmosphere Conditions of Persimmon (Diospyros kaki. cv. Fuyu) Fruits ('부유' 단감의 MA포장 조건에 따른 포장기체조성 및 과실의 품질 변화)

  • Persimmon (Diospyros kaki. cv. Fuyu) fruits were packaged under different conditions, and then stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for 21 weeks. The tried packages were heat-sealed bag of one fruit, heat-sealed bag of five fruits, and tie-sealed bag of five fruits, which used films of three different thickness (0.03 ㎜, 0.05 ㎜ and 0.06 ㎜). Throughout the storage, package free volume, package atmosphere and quality were measured. Package free volume decreased with time with higher rate for heat-sealed bags, in which close contact between fruit and the film was eventually reached in longer storage. However, tie-sealed bags maintained the levels of stabilized free volume. The rate of free volume decrease was faster with thinner film and larger bag size for the packs sealed by the same method. Package atmosphere covered $O_2$ concentration of $1.1{\sim}17.1%$ and $CO_2$ concentration of $1.1{\sim}8.3%$, $O_2$ concentration decreased during storage, whereas $CO_2$ increased. Thinner film package created the internal atmosphere of higher $O_2$ and lower $CO_2$ concentrations. Tie-sealed bags of 5 fruits in the films of 0.05 mm and 0.06 mm thickness maintained the equilibrated package atmosphere of $1.1{\sim}3.0%\;O_2$ and $4.0{\sim}5.5%\;CO_2$, which preserved the fruits best in terms of firmness and less physiological changes of flesh browning and peel browning. At five fruit heat-sealed bag in the films of 0.06 mm thickness with $CO_2\;8.3%$, flesh browning occurred at a high rate, whereas all treatments in the film of 0.03 mm thickness with high $O_2$ and relatively low $CO_2$ contents, flesh and peel browning rates were high.

  • The aim of this study was to develop the appropriate packaging method for minimally processed sliced onions. The films of different gas permeabilities (LDPE $30{\mu}m$, PD900 and PD941) were used for packaging 1300g of onion slices cut into octuplicate pieces. Perforated LDPE package was prepared as control for comparison. The package atmosphere and onion quality were measured through storage at $1^{\circ}C$ for 38 days. PD900 package of the lowest gas permeability was the best in keeping the fresh-cut onions by maintaining MA conditions of 1-3% $O_2$ and 4-11% $CO_2$ concentrations. The benefits were reduced discoloration, decay and soakness.

  • Today, Ultrasonic is used as an important non-destructive test tool of semiconductor reliability evaluation and failure analysis. The semiconductor packaging trend goes to develop thin package, this trend makes difficult to inspect to defect in semiconductor package. One of the important problem in all semiconductor is moisture absorption in the atmosphere. This moisture causes crack or delamination to package when the semiconductor package is soldered on PCB. Reliability evaluation of semiconductor's object is investigating the effect of this moisture. For that reason, this study is investigating the effect of this moisture and reliability evaluation of semiconductor after preconditioning test and scanning acoustic microscope.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging of Minimally Processed Cut Garlic (최소가공된 절단 마늘의 환경기체조절포장)

  • There is a need in food industry to store minimally processed garlic for long time to have it be used just at the time of demand for final product processing. Optimal modified atmosphere packaging is expected to slow down the quality change extending its storage life. In order to find optimal packaging conditions, plastic films of different gas permeability properties (low density polyethylene (LDPE) $30{\mu}m$, polyolefin $50{\mu}m$ (PD 900), polyolefin $20{\mu}m$ (PD 941)) were used for packaging 400 g of minimally processed garlic. Perforated LDPE packages were prepared as control. The packaged products were stored at $1{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 52 days. Package treatments were compared in weight loss, decay, surface color, hardness and soluble solid content. While control package had normal atmosphere of air, LDPE, PD 900 and PD 941 packages attained internal concentration of $O_2$ 4.6% / $CO_2$ 12%, $O_2$ 0.9% / $CO_2$ 21% and $O_2$ 0.5% / $CO_2$ 13% after 45 days, respectively. Control packaging had rapid weight loss with high mold decay and great surface color change in 45 days. In PD 900 film packages of lowest gas permeability, the fresh-cut garlic could be stored without mold decay for 52 days. Except control packaging, there were no significant differences in surface color, hardness and soluble solid content among package treatments.

Internal Atmosphere of Individual Sweet Persimmon Package as Function of Fruit Size and Package Film Area (과일 크기와 포장 표면적에 따른 낱개 단감 포장의 기체조성)

  • Internal gas composition of single unit persimmon package was evaluated at $-1^{\circ}C$ as function of package film area and fruit weight in order to find packaging conditions to achieve the optimal modified atmosphere beneficial for keeping the freshness. With large fruit size(${\approx}230\;g$), low permeable films (LLDPE/PP in 35 or $40\;{\mu}m$ thickness and $30\;{\mu}m$ OPP) with an exact fitness to the fruit (surface area of $0.040\;m^2$) resulted in anaerobic atmosphere with occurrence of browning in long term storage. With medium (${\approx}210\;g$) and medium small (${\approx}190g$) sizes, larger surface area of low permeable $35\;{\mu}m$ LLDPE/PP film provided higher $O_2$ and lower $CO_2$ concentrations causing higher occurrence of softening and blackening discoloration. On the other hand, smaller surface area of lower $O_2$ and higher $CO_2$ concentrations had a high risk of browning. Wise combination of fruit size, packaging film and surface area is required for attaining the beneficial modified atmosphere to prevent the physiological injuries.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging of Fresh Strawberries by Antimicrobial Plastic Films (항균성 플라스틱 필름을 이용한 딸기의 환경기체조절포장)

  • Low density polyethylene (LDPE) films incorporated with 1% antimicrobial agents of Rheum palmatum extract, Coptis chinensis extract, and Ag-substituted inorganic zirconium matrix, were applied to modified atmosphere packaging of 200 g fresh strawberries. Plain LDPE film package, PVC wrap and perforative pinhole package of the film impregnated with 1% Rheum palmatum extract were also constructed for comparative purpose. All the packages were stored for 13 days at $5^{\circ}C$ and measured in package atmosphere, microbial count and quality attributes of the strawberry fruits. The antimicrobial LDPE films retarded the growth in total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria and yeast on the fruits, and resulted in significantly lower decay. The degrees of reduced microbial growth and fruit decay in the antimicrobial film packages were more pronounced, when applied by hermetical sealing to produce the modified atmospheres of low $O_2$ (<4.0%) and $CO_2$ concentrations with $6.3{\sim}9.0%$. The hermetically sealed packages of antimicrobial LDPE films also showed better retention of fruit firmness and did not give any negative effect on the physical and chemical qualities of strawberries.

Compilation of Respiration Model Parameters for Designing Modified Atmosphere Package of Fresh Produce

  • Enzyme kinetics-based respiration model can be effectively used for estimating respiration rate in $O_2$ consumption and $CO_2$ production of fresh produce as a function of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ concentrations. Arrhenius equation can be applied to describe the temperature dependence of the respiration rate. Parameters of enzyme kinetics-based respiration model and activation energy of Arrhenius equation were compiled from analysis of literature data and closed system experiment. They enable to estimate the respiration rate for any modified atmosphere conditions at temperature of interest and thus can be used for design of modified atmosphere packaging of fresh produce.
