In this paper, high speed fiber optic sensor weigh-in motion (WIM) system is proposed. Bragg gratings which have several advantages such as good reproducibility and good multiplicity compare to other optical fiber sensors are used for the system. Fabry-Perot filter for the signal process, which cannot be used in the high speed measurement because of the limitation in fast operation of PZT, is excluded. A new signal processing system which employs bandwidth filter is proposed and bridge type new sensor package design is also proposed. Design of the mold supporter is modified to round shape and then supporting points do not change. The data from the fiber sensors show identical and linear behavior to the axle weight. The proposed fiber optic WIM system is tested in the laboratory and experimented with actual trucks. The new concept of calibration is introduced and calculated by the experiments. The calibrated weight data show good approximations to real axial weights regardless the velocities of the truck.
On-line phase tracking of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and experimental vibration control of a composite beam with a sensing-patch are investigated. We propose a sensing-patch for the compensation of the interferometric non-linearity. In this paper, a sensing-patch that comprises an EFPI and a piezo ceramic(PZT) is fabricated and the characteristics of the sensing-patch are experimentally investigated. A simple and practical logic is applied for the real-time tracking of optical phase of an interferometer. Experimental results show that the proposed sensing-patch does not have the non-linear behavior of conventional EFPI and hysteresis of piezoelectric material. Moreover, it has good strain resolution and wide dynamic sensing range. Finally, the vibration control with the developed sensing-patch has been performed using Fuzzy logic controller, and the possibility of sensing-patch as a sensoriactuator is considered.
In this study, Acoustic emission(AE) sensors were fabricated using lead-free piezoelectric ceramics for prohibiting environmental pollution. Structure of AE sensors were designed as Langvin type air backing form. Here, the piezoelectic element was used as PZT(EC-65)(AE1) and NKN(AE2), respectively. The measured resonant frequency, the maximum sensitivity frequency and sensitivity of AE sensors were as follows ; 143 kHz, 29.4 kHz and 69.3 dB in AE1 and 179 kHz, 29.4 kHz and 66.3dB in AE2, respectively.
The optical element was usually used in optical devices and optical transfer devices, but it has been recently used in communication, computer and medical equipment. With the development of very high speed optical-communication, the development of the kernel parts of optical communication has also increased. Presently, the alignment of the optical element is time consuming, and an effective alignment algorithm has not yet to be developed. In this paper, the alignment automation of the optical element is studied. The ultra precision stage is applied to an optical element alignment to improve the accuracy of the alignment. The automation program of the optical element alignment is developed by LabVIEW programming to save the alignment time. The alignment algorithms of the optical element consist of field search and peak search algorithms.
Optical fiber sensor is a subject which has been attracted considerable attention in recent year. Especially, it is being developed for the detection and location of partial discharge in oil-filled transformers. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate directivity and sensitivity of a hollow cylindrical mandrel sensor. The sound source is a PZT actuator of hollow cylinder type. Several layers of the fiber laminated around the mandrel surface and experiments were performed on three axis modes. The experimental results can be applied to analyze detected signals optimally.
In this paper, an optical fiber sensor(OF sensor) utilizing the principal of Sagnac interferometer was proposed to detect the discharge signals which generated from needle-sphere electrode system in insulating oil. The performance of OF sensor was checked by sinusoidal calibration signal generated by PZT acuator at 198kHz. The detected discharge signals consisted of acoustic signal and the electrical noise. The noise signal could be removed by digital low pass filter. It was demonstrated that the OF sensor in this research had a possibility to detect the discharge signals in power apparatus.
The preliminary results on the application of optical fiber sensor(OFS) for locations of ultrasonic signals in underwater are presented and analyzed. The OFS utilizing the principle of Sagnac interferometry was designed and the hollowed cylindrical mandrel wound by single mode optical fiber was used as sensing component. The ultrasonic signal source was simulated by the PZT actuator operated with function generator. It has been shown that the OFS could detect the signals less affected by ultrasonic path comparing to conventional acousto-electric sensor and accurate location of ultrasonic signal could be carried out using two OFSs.
This paper shows results on the application of optical fiber sensors(OFS) for locations of ultrasonic signals in silicon insulating oil. The OFS system based on the principle of Sagnac interferometry has been designed and established for this work. The hollowed cylindrical mandrel wound by single mode optical fiber was used as a sensing component and ultrasonic signals which simulate the partial discharge In the oil have been generated by PZT actuator operated with function generator. The experimental results shows that the OFS has a excellent performance for the PD location with resolutions less than 1$^{\circ}C$ error range in the miniature insulating oil tank.
The objective of this research is to develop real-time failure detection techniques for damage assessment of composite materials using optical fiber sensors. Signals from matrix cracking or fiber fracture in composite laminates are treated by signal processing unit in real-time. This paper describes the implementation of time-frequency analysis such as the Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) to determine the time of occurrence of failure. In order to verify the performance of the optical fiber sensor for stress wave detection, we performed pencil break test with EFPI sensor and compared it with that of PZT. The EFPI sensor was embedded in composite beam to sense the failure signals and a tensile test was performed. The signals of the fiber optic sensor when damage occurred were characterized using STFT and wavelet transform. Failure detection system detected the moment of failure accurately and showed good sensitivity with the infinitesimal failure signal.
