  • A series of $H_3PO_4$-doped composite membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) and silica have been prepared by sol-gel process. The proton conductivity, as well as properties of swelling, methanol permeation, was measured in this study. The proton conductivity increased with the molar ratio of $H_3PO_4$ to silica. With the silica content increasing, swelling degree decreased and methanol permeability showed a slight increase. It suggested that the former was mainly determined by hydrophilicity of the membrane, while the latter was dominated by the interconnectivity of matrix. According to the value of on, the optimal conformations of these composite membranes were 60, 70, 80 wt.$\%$ of PS-x in membranes, where x were 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5, respectively. These composite membranes were thermal stability up to $200^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate fluoride release in the oral cavity from polymer adhesive tape which is NaF coated PVA. 45 healthy adults were divided into 3 groups by the type of topical fluoride applied: 60seconds taste$^{(R)}$ APF gel (group 1), FluoroDose$^{(R)}$ varnish (group 2) and NaF-PVA (group 3). Topical fluoride was applied to the facial surface of maxillary 12 teeth and unstimulated whole saliva was collected to measure fluoride release after 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. Fluoride-sensitive electrode was used for measuring the fluoride concentration in the saliva samples. All three groups showed significantly higher value for fluoride concentration than the baseline after 1 and 3 hours (p < 0.05). After 6 hours, group 3 showed significantly higher fluoride concentration than the baseline (p < 0.05) and also showed significantly higher value for fluoride concentration than group 1 and group 2. Between group 1 and group 2, however, there was no significant difference statistically with respect to fluoride concentration value (p > 0.05).

  • In this work, we prepared hydrogels for wound dressing from a mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and alginate using the $\^$60/Co ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation technique. We examined the physical properties of these hydrogels, including gelation, water absorptivity, and gel strength, to evaluate the applicability of these hydrogels for wound dressings. The biocompatibility of these hydrogels was also evaluated in vitro, in cultures of mouse fibroblasts, and in vivo, by subcutaneous implantation studies in rats. The gel content and strength increased upon increasing the radiation dose and upon decreasing the concentration of alginate. The degree of swelling was inversely proportional to the gel content and strength. The degree of cytotoxicity of the ${\gamma}$-ray-treated hydrogels was ca. 60% compared to the (-) control (serum) after 1 day of incubation. When the incubations were prolonged up to 2 days, the toxicity of all the samples decreased remarkably and reached that of the control. Subcutaneous implantation studies in rats indicated that foreign body reactions occurring around the implanted hydrogels were moderate and became minimal upon increasing the implantation time.

  • HTGR (High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor) is spotlighted to next generation nuclear power plant for producing the clean hydrogen gas and the electricity. In this study, the spherical $UO_3$ gel particles were prepared by the external gelation process, and the characteristics of these particles were analyzed the particle shape, composition of precipitate, and thermal decomposition characteristics with the Streoscope, FT-IR, and X-ray diffractometer. Raw material of the ADUN (Acid Deficient Uranyl Nitrate) solution, which has [$NO_3$]/[U] mole ratio = 1.75, was obtained from dissolution of the $U_{3}O_{8}$ powder with concentrated $HNO_3$, and its concentration is 3.5 M-U/l. The broth solution is prepared with the ADUN, urea, PVA, and THFA solution. The droplets of the broth solution was made through a nozzle system. From this study, we obtained the following results; 1) an externel chemical gelation process is a suitable method in the spherical $UO_3$ particle production, 2) the particle shape are changed by an urea mixing time, THFA volume, and the viscosity of the broth solution, 3) the amorphous $UO_3$ particles obtained from these experiments was converted to $U_{3}O_{8}$ and then $UO_2$ by heat treatment in hydrogen atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$.

  • A highly selective, sensitive and reliable ozone sensing $In_2O_3$ thin film was fabricated by a sol-gel method. The fabricated film is operated at a relatively lower temperature than ever developed thin films and saved operating power. $In_2O_3$ films deposited by sol-gel technique has been recently attracted because it is an economical and energy saving method and precisely controlled microstructure. Indium alkoxide precursor was synthesized from the reaction between indium hydroxide and butanol. PVA binder was used to improve adhesion of the films. The $In_2O_3$ thin films were obtained by spin coating from 1 to 5 times followed by drying at $100^{\circ}C$ and calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The film thickness was controlled by the number of coating time. The morphology and the thickness of the $In_2O_3$ films were examined by a SEM and XRD. The $In_2O_3$ thin films show a high sensitive to ozone gas at operating temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. The $In_2O_3$ sensor has very good selectivity to $CH_4$, CO, $C_4H_{10}$ and ethanol.

  • The broth solution was prepared by the mixing of an uranyl nitrate, THFA, PVA, and water. The uranium concentration of the broth solution was $0.5{\sim}0.8$ mole-U/L and the viscosity of it was $30{\sim}80cSt$. The droplets of this broth solution were farmed in air and ammonia by the vibrating nozzle with the frequency of 100 Hz at the amplitude of $100{\sim}130V$. The diameter of the droplet was about $1900{\mu}m$ from using the nozzle diameter of 1 mm. The diameter of the aged gel was about $1400{\mu}m$ after aging in ammonia solution at $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, and the dried gel with the diameter of about $900{\mu}m$ was obtained after drying at room temperature or partially vacuum condition. The diameter of the calcined $UO_3$ microsphere after calcination at $600^{\circ}C$ appeared about $800{\mu}m$ in air atmosphere. Although the droplets of the same sizes were formed, the calcined microspheres of different sizes were manufactured in the case of the broth solutions of the different uranium concentration. The droplets of the desired diameters were obtained by the change of the nozzle diameters and the broth flow rates.

  • A polymerized organic-inorganic complexation route is introduced for the synthesis of oxide ceramic powders. Polyvinyl alcohol was used as the organic carrier for precursor ceramic gel. Porous and soft powders, which have a high specific surface area, were obtained after calcinating the aerated precursors. The PVA content and its degree of polymerization had a significant influence on the homogeneity of the final powder. In particular, attrition milling process with the porous powder resulted in ultra-fine particles. In the case of the preparation of cordierite powder, nano-size powder, which has a high specific surface area of 181 ㎡/g, was obtained by the milling process. The complexation route was also applied to the synthesis of unstable phase in room temperature like beta-cristobalite, high temperature form of silica.

  • Nanoparticles with unsaturated poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (UPHAs) biosynthesized with Pseudo-monas oleovorans were prepared by spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. The influence of nanoparticle formation was investigated with various experimental parameters such as sonication conditions, sol-vent, surfactant and polymer contents, etc. The physical and chemical properties of UPHAS and its nanoparticles were characterized using $^1$H- and $\^$13/C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of particles was observed using scanning electron microscope and the size and distribution of nanoparticles were measured with electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer. The mean diameter of particles decreased with increasing sonication amplitude and time. The addition of ethanol into UPHAS chloroform solution decreased the particle size presumably due to increased solvent diffusion into water phase. The particle size increased with increased the concentration of UPHAS solution. Under the 2-4% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution the minimum mean diameter of particles was shown. The higher degree of hydrolysis and degree of polymerization of PVA increased the mean diameter of particles.

  • In this study, polysaccharide-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were prepared by using ${\gamma}$-ray and evaluated for potential application as an anti-inflammation patch. Ulmus davidiana var. japonica (UD), one of polysaccharides has been particularly used as an oriental remedy for the treatment of inflammation and ulcers. PVA as a biocompatible polymer and glycerin as a moisturizer were blended with the UD, and its hydrogels were prepared by radiation crosslinking. Characterizations for UD hydrogels were performed by using cytotoxicity assay, antioxidant activity test, and physicochemical test such as gel fraction ratio, and swelling behavior. The results showed that these UD hydrogels had excellent physical properties, anti-inflammation activity, and non-cytotoxicity on the cells. Therefore, these polysaccharide based-UD hydrogels can be effectively used as an inflammation patch.
