Spherical multicellular aggregates of adult rat hepatocytes (spheroid) which have tissue like structure, were formed and immobilized in the pores of polyurethane foam (PUF) which was used as a culture substratum. These hepatocyte/spheroids, about 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter, have maintained higher differentiated functions than those of hepatocyte/monolayer for about 3 weeks in serum-free medium. Then, we designed a prototype module of an artificial liver support system using a PUF/spheroid packed-bed, in which hepatocyte/spheroids were immobilized at high density. The urea synthesis activity of the artificial liver was maintained at least 10 days in 100% rat blood plasma. We start examining the performance of hybrid artificial liver in an ex vivo extracorporeal experiment with an acute hepatic failure rat.
Rigid polyurethane foams (PUF)s were synthesized with environmentally friendly blowing agents such as a cyclopentane/distilled water (10.0/1.0, pphp) mixture and distilled water only for four different silicone surfactants having different silicone/polyether ratios. An attempt was made to reduce the thermal conductivities of the PUF samples by varying the concentration and the silicone/polyether ratio of the various silicone surfactants. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated an optimum concentration of the silicone surfactant of about 1.5 to 2.5 phpp for various surfactants to reduce the cell size and lower the thermal conductivity. The silicone surfactant having a higher silicone/polymer ratio showed a smaller cell size and, therefore, demonstrated the lower thermal conductivity of the PUF samples. From the relation between the thermal conductivity and the cell size of the PUF samples, the smaller cell size improved the thermal insulation property of the rigid PUF for both the PUF samples blown by the cyclopentane/distilled water (10.0/1.0, pphp) mixture and distilled water only. If the blowing agent is fixed, then the cell size is an important factor to decrease the thermal conductivity of the PUF samples. These results indicated that rigid PUF samples having lower thermal conductivity can be obtained by choosing a silicone surfactant containing a higher silicone/polyether ratio, as well as an optimum content of the surfactant.

A column solid phase extraction procedure based on modified polyurethane foam (PUF) by a newly synthesized Schiff base ionophore, named 2,2'-{iminobis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilo(1E)prop-1-yl-1-ylidene]}diphenol, was developed for preconcentration step of trace amounts determination of copper ions in water samples by atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. The influence of parameters on the adsorption process such as sample pH, amount of modified PUF packed in the column, type and volume of stripping reagent and its flow rate were investigated and optimized. Under optimum experimental conditions, the calibration graph was linear in a relatively wide range ($0.005-210{\mu}g/ml$) with a limit of detection $0.002{\mu}g/ml$ of copper. The proposed method allows achieving to a concentration factor of >133. The capacity of a column (1.6 cm i.d.) packed by 6 g of PUF modified by 12 mg of the Schiff base was found to be $247.7({\pm}2.1){\mu}g$ of copper. It was found that the adsorption process was highly selective towards copper ions with respect to some associated metal ions. The presented procedure was successfully applied for determination of copper in some water samples.

Cell opening characteristics dependent on the cell openers for the conventional formulation of a closed-cell polyurethane foam (PUF) was studied using 1-butanol and lithium salt of 12-hydroxystearic acid (Li-12HSA) as the reactive cell opening agents. While cell openining content of only 10.5 % was obtained for the sample with 4 phr of 1-butanol as the single reactive cell opener, that of 98.0% could be obtained for the sample with 2 phr of Li-12HSA as the reactive co-cell opener. As the results, it showed that a fully open-cell rigid PUF could be obtained by introducing a novel reactive cell opener, having a functional group able to form a bulky side-chain on the urethane networks, without severe loss of mechanical properties of the closed-cell PUF like cell size, bulk density, and thermal conductivity.
This study examined the effects of liquid and solid additives on the morphological, mechanical and thermal insulating properties of rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs). The PUFs synthesized with tetramethylsilane (TEMS) as a liquid-type additive showed a smaller average cell size and lower thermal conductivity than those with the aerosil 200 and clay 30B as solid-type additives. When TEMS was added, the average cell size of the PUF became more uniform and finer due to the reduced surface tension of the polymer solution, which increased the nucleation rate and number of bubbles produced and reduced cell size. The PUFs with TEMS showed the highest closed cell contents among the PUFs prepared using TEMS, aerosil 200 and clay 30B. This suggests that the insulation properties of PUF can be determined by both the size of the cell structure and the amount of closed cell contents in the system. The compression and flexural strengths of the PUF increased slightly when the aerosil 200, clay 30B and TEMS were added compared those of the neat PUF. The reaction profiles of the PUFs showed a similar gel and tack tree time with the reaction time among the PUFs synthesized with three different additives and neat PUF. This suggests that the nucleating additives used in this study do not affect the bubble growth of the chemical reaction, and the additives may act as nucleating agents during the formation of PUF. From the above results of the cell size, thermal conductivity, closed cell contents and reaction profile of the PUFs, liquid-type nucleating agent, such as TEMS, is more effective in decreasing the thermal conductivity of the PUF than solid-type nucleating agent, such as aerosil 200 and clay 30B.
The physical properties of rigid polyurethane foam(PUF) synthesized using various types of blowing agents such as water, HFC-365mfc, HFC-245fa, HCFC-l4lb, CFC-11 and n-pentane were studied. The blending effect of blowing agents were also studied. The thermal conductivity, reaction rate, and cell morphology of the PUF with various blending ratio of blowing agents were investigated. The PUF blown by water shows the highest compressive strength among other single blowing agents. The thermal conductivity of PUFs blown by HFC-245fa and HFC-365mfc are close to that of PUFs blown by CFC-11. When HFC-365mfc was mixed with HFC-245fa(30mo1e$\%$) as coblowing agent, the mechanical property shows the highest value among other coblowing agents. It is that the thermal conductivity of PUFs depends on cell size of PUFs as well as thermal conductivity of blowing agent in gaseous form.
Polyurethane foams (PUFs) were prepared from polymeric 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI), mixed polyol with OH value of 480, silicone surfactant, three catalysts, and hydrofluorocarbon(HFC) as blowing agent. Balance (PC-8), gelling (33LV), and trimerization (TMR-2) catalysts were used. The effect of the catalysts on the physical properties of PUF with increase of isocyanate (NCO) index and aging time was investigated. The cell size of the PUF with PC-8 and 33LV slightly increased with an increase in NCO index from 100 to 170 but compressive strength did not change significantly. In case of trimerization catalyst, the compressive strength of PUF increased from 8.75 to 1$10.5 kg_f/cm^2$ and the cell size decreased with an increase in NCO index. The compressive strength of the PUF with 33LV increased from 9.21 to $10.15 kg_f/cm^2$ with an increase in aging time. However, there was no detectable change in the compressive strength of PUF with TMR-2. A possible interpretation of the results includes an additional cross-link reaction of non-reacted MDI and FTIR spectrum illustrated the change of NCO peak.

Polyurethane foams (PUFs) were prepared from polymeric 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI), seven polyols with different functionalities and OH values, silicone surfactant, two catalysts, and three blowing agents. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC-11), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC-141b) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC-365mfc) were used as blowing agents. The effect of gelling and blowing catalysts on basic properties and cell structure of PUF with HCFC-141b was investigated. The cell size of the PUF decreased with an increase in the amount of catalyst from 0 to 2 pph (parts per hundred polyol). In the case of gelling type catalyst, the compressive strength increased from 11.9 to $12.66kg_f/cm^2$ with an increase in the amount catalyst from 0 to 2 pph but the density did not change significantly. The gelling time, density, and compressive strength of the PUF with three different blowing agents were measured. There was no detectable change in their properties. However, the cell structure of PUF with HCFC-141b was not uniform as in the other systems.

Since Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is normally carried at 1.1 bar pressure and at -163℃, special Cargo Containment System (CCS) are used. As LNG carrier is becoming larger, typical LNG insulation systems adopt a method to increase the thickness of insulation panel to reduce sloshing load and Boil-off Rate (BOR). However, this will decrease LNG cargo volume and increase insulation material costs. In this paper, silica aerogel, glass bubble were synthesized in polyurethane foam to increase volumetric efficiency by improving mechanical and thermal performance of insulation. In order to increase dispersibility of particles, ultrasonic dispersion was used. Dynamic impact test, quasi-static compression test at room temperature (20℃) and cryogenic temperature (-163℃) was evaluated. To evaluate the thermal performance, the thermal conductivity at room temperature (20℃) was measured. As a result, specimens without ultrasonic dispersion have a little effect on strength under the compressive load, although they show high mechanical performance under the impact load. In contrast, specimens with ultrasonic dispersion have significantly increased impact strength and compressive strength. Recently, as the density of Polyurethane foam (PUF) has been increasing, these results can be a method for improving the mechanical and thermal performance of insulation panel.
LNG storage tank is a facility to store liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its safety and stability to be greatly needed. When there is a LNG leakage in case of primary container problem, a special facility such as a bund wall should be constructed to store the leaked LNG. But this method makes the land usage inefficient and construction price high. So nowadays the full containment type LNG storage tank is selected instead of constructing a bund wall. In the full containment type tank, the concrete sidewall has the ability to store LNG temporarily. There are largely two methods to give the concrete sidewall the ability. In a method, rebar should be used when constructing the side wall of the LNG storage tank. In the other method, the protecting material such as sprayed polyurethane foam should be applied on the inner surface of the concrete sidewall. Sprayed PUF keeps the temperature of the sidewall above the specified temperature during the specified periods. Recently the thermal stability reinforcing method using sprayed polyurethane foam has been applied to all LNG storage tank built in Korea.
