  • To investigate the fabrication possibility of a polymer particle dispersed metal matrix composite, polytetrafluorothylene (PTFE) particles were incorporated into the Al by the powder metallurgy process. The characteristics of a PTFE/Al composite were evaluated by measuring the density and hardness, and analysis of XRD, FT-Raman and microstructure. And wear properties of these composites were evaluated under the dry wear condition. It was possible to obtain the PTFE particles stably dispersed Al matrix composites by the hot press process at the sintering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$. The wear coefficient of a PTFE/Al compoite decreased with increasing of the volume fraction of PTFE. The wear weight of a PTFE/Al composite increased with increasing of the volume fractionof PTFE in the range of 0~10 vol.%PTFE, and showed maximum value at 10 vol.%PTFE, and then decreased at 20vol.%PTFE.

  • Ni-PTFE composite plated on graphite (C/Ni-PTFE) and PTFE (PTFE/Ni-PTFE) particles were prepared uniformly by electroless composite plating. The conductivity of C/Ni-PTFE particles was 280 S/m higher than 95 S/m of PTFE/Ni-PTFE particles at same composite plating condition (Ni:35~36 wt%, PTFE:8 wt%). The C/Ni-PTFE particles were formed into the C/Ni-PTFE plate using heat treatment at $350^{\circ}C$ under 10~$1000\;kg/cm^2$. The C/Ni-PTFE plate showed 1) high conductivity of $5.7\;{\times}\;10^4\;S/m$ due to the existence of graphite as conducting aid and the formation of 3-dimensional Ni network 2) good gas diffusion caused by various pore volumes (0.01~$100\;{\mu}m$) in the plate. The plate could be useful for an electrode in an alkaline fuel cell (AFC). The current density of C/Ni-PTFE electrode indicated $84\;mA/cm^2$ at 0.3V and it was 3.0 times higher than that of PTFE/Ni-PTFE electrode.

  • Electroless Ni-P coatings are widely used in the chemical, mechanical, and electronic industries because of their excellent wear and abrasion resistance. In this study, The influence of pH values on properties of Ni-P-PTFE composite coatings was investigated. To improve mold lubrication, Ni-P-PTFE composite coatings at different pH value were studied. The morphology and phase structure of Ni-P-PTFE composite coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffractometry(XRD). The result showed that Ni-P-PTFE composite coating is composed of Ni, P and PTFE. It exhibits an amorphous structure and good Corrosion Resistance to the substrate. Ni-P-PTFE composite coatings have higher open circuit potential than that of the substrate, which obtained at pH value of 5.0 optimal integrated properties.

  • Chromium plating is a common surface treatment technique extensively applied in industry due its excellent properties which include substantial hardness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, surface color, and luster. In this study, the effect of PTFE on corrosion behavior of Cr-P plating, low carbon steel substrates are electroplated in Cr(III) baths without and with PTFE. Trivalent chromium carbon plating was electroplated from trivalent chromium sulfate-based baths with different PTFE dispersion contents. The study focused on the microstructure, PTFE content, roughness, and corrosion resistance of the Cr-P-PTFE composite plating. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy images showed a smoother plating and a decrease in the surface roughness of the electrodeposited. The results demonstrate that PTFE eliminates the cracks within plating by reducing internal stress. Therefore, the corrosion resistance of Cr-P-PTFE composite platings were better than that of Cr-P alloy platings.

  • PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at wide temperature range, and more over, shows a low value of friction coefficient. On the other hand, it shows cold flow and high wear rate. However, these short comings can be overcome by adding various fillers. In this experiment, PTFE and polyimide powder were mixed into composite and its tribological characteristics was investigated. 100% polyimide was also tested for comparison. The countefface material was a stainless steel (SUS304). Friction and wear tester of ring-on-block type was used at room temperature and under atmosphere. After the wear test, the worn surfaces were examined by optical microscope. The test results show that PTFE-polyimide composite generates. the wear transfer film on both sides of the friction surfaces, and, the friction coefficient and the wear rates are relatively low. 100% polyimide generated little wear transfer films, showed high friction and wear rates, and also showed some problems of vibration and noise. It even damaged the stainless steel countefface. It was concluded that 100% polyimide does not generate transfer film well because its shear resistanbe is high and it stickslips, thus, friction coefficients and wear rates are high. In case of PTFE-polyimide composite, on the other hand, transfer film containing sufficient PTFE adheres and remains on both wear surfaces well enough because PTFE has low shear resistance. Polyimide particles in the composite were proved to be able to bear normal load and does not show stick-slip because they are covered with transfer film containing much PTFE.

  • Recently, PTFE-polyimide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polyimide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atmosphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. Notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20%-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s because adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI 80%. PI 100% showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.

  • New composite membranes were manufactured by impregnating post-sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s containing perfluorocyclobutane (PFCB) groups into porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films. Two kinds of post-sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with two different monomer ratios (sulfonable biphenylene monomer : non-sulfonable sulfonyl monomer = 6 : 4, 4 : 6) were first prepared through three synthetic steps: synthesis of trifluorovinylether-terminated monomers, thermal cycloaddition polymerization and post-sulfonation using chlorosulfonic acid (CSA). The composite membranes were then prepared by adjusting the concentrations (5~20 wt%) of the resulting copolymers impregnated in the PTFE films. The water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and ion conductivity of the composite membranes were characterized and compared with their unreinforced dense membranes and Nafion. All the synthesized compounds, monomers and polymers were characterized by $^1H$-NMR, $^{19}F$-NMR and FT-IR and the composite membranes were observed with scanning electron micrographs (SEM).

  • PTFE composites for use of microwave substrate were fabricated by impregnation and heat treatment fabrication with glass fabric. This study shows dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and loss can be controlled by thickness of PTFE composite with change of pressure condition in heating press process. The dielectric constant of the PTFE composites has decreasing tendency as given higher pressure condition. The dielectric loss has similar result too. Especially, the case of the dielectric loss was affected by the condition of pressure at heating press and had the best performance under 3 MPa. In order to see the reason why thickness conditions make different, their microstructures were also observed.
