To understand the spatio-temporal fluctuations and ecological characteristics of heterotrophic dinoflagellate $Noctiluca$$scintillans$, we investigated their population densities and environmental factors during four seasons at 20 stations of Gwangyang Bay and at 23 stations of Jinhae Bay in 2010. $N.$$scintillans$ was seasonally abundant during spring and summer, with temperature ranging 15 to $27^{\circ}C$ in the both bays, whereas the density reduced in fall and winter. The populations of $N.$$scintillans$ at each station in both bays showed a significantly positive relationship with water temperature, indicating that relatively high water temperature within its optimum temperature stimulates the growth of $N.$$scintillans$ population. In particular, low water temperature (<$4^{\circ}C$) and salinity (<12 psu) led to disappear of $N.$$scintillans$ population, although they were observed at all season in both bays. Spatio-temporal variations of Chl.$a$ concentration was not significantly correlated with $N.$$scintillans$ population densities. However, the $Noctiluca$ abundances were also high during spring and summer season when relatively high Chl.$a$ concentration was observed in both bays. This result suggests that standing crops of phytoplankton may be one of important contributing factors to enhance the abundance of $N.$$scintillans$.
This study described the spatial distributions of marine environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a concentration and turbidity, and characteristics of phytoplankton community such as species composition, standing crops and dominant species at 19 fishing ports around Jeju Island during the early summer of 2016. I analyzed bio-oceanographical characteristics using principal component analysis (PCA) of the environmental factors and biological parameters. Water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a and turbidity ranged from 17.6 to $20.7^{\circ}C$, from 26.19 to 32.33 psu, from 0.76 to $7.13{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and from 0.51 to 14.49 FTU, respectively. A total of 51 species of phytoplankton belonging to 35 genera were identified. In particular, diatoms and dinoflagellates accounted for more than 56.8% and 27.4% of all the species, respectively. Moreover, the number of phytoplankton species was controlled by salinity. Phytoplankton cell density ranged from $2.9cells\;mL^{-1}$ to $185.9cells\;mL^{-1}$. The dominant species were Navicula spp. Stephanopyxis turris, Eutreptiella gymnastica and Mesodinium rubrum. Environmental factors and the phytoplankton community varied greatly between sampling sites. According to PCA, the biological oceanographic characteristics of the around Jeju Island were characterized by meteorological factors such as air temperature, precipitation and discharge of ground water during early summer.

To understand the geochemical processes in the Han River Estuary, distributions and behaviors of nutrients, dissolved organic matters, and uranium were investigated and analyzed during estuarine tidal mixing in June 2000 and February 2001. The distribution of inorganic nutrients showed very dynamic distributional patterns implying an apparent nitrification process and a concave non-conservative mixing along the salinity gradient. Dissolved organic carbon was high in the upstream region and decreased sharply in the low salinity region of around 5 psu. The 3-D fluorescence characteristic of dissolved organic matter showed two distinct fluorophores in the study area. Biomacromolecules originated mainly from the indigenous biochemical processes and geomacromolecules from terrestrial humic materials. In the study area, the distribution of geomacromolecule showed a concave non-conservative property along the salinity gradient presumably due to the flocculation and removal processes in the estuary. Meanwhile, distribution of the dissolved uranium, mainly in the form of stable uranium carbonate complex, also showed a concave non-conservative property along the salinity gradient in the Han River Estuary. From this study, the removal rate of dissolved uranium in the Han River Estuary was estimated to be about 7.1 ton per year.
We studied spawning, hatching and larval growth of Amphiprion melanopus under laboratory conditions. Each time a fish spawned about 440 to 650 eggs. The eggs were hatched 9 days later. Nest colour of the eggs changed from clear yellow orange to greyish violet with processing of embryogenesis. With regard to spawning according to the substrates, the fish prefered red clay pot and ceramic pot to volcanic scoria and live rock. Hatching rate (%) of the eggs on the former substrates was significantly higher than that on the latter. The number of eggs varied with the food stuff supplied to the fish. The fish fed Tetra bits (commercial diet), meat of short necked clams and mussels, and astaxanthin showed significantly higher fecundity with 638 eggs than that fed only Tetra bits (477 eggs) or Tetra bits with meat of shellfish without astaxanthin ($549{\sim}553\;eggs$). Higher temperature ranging from 24 to $30^{\circ}C$ induced shorter incubation period and smaller total length, but higher hatching rate. The optimum salinity and L:D cycle with $60\;{\mu}mol$ photon $m^{-2}s^{-1}$ for hatching were 33 psu and 16:8, respectively. The newly hatched larvae about 4.6 mm in total length grew to 7.5 mm in one week, 18.8 mm in a month and 37.9 mm in 70 days after hatching.
During the 1st Korea-Russia Arctic Expedition from 3 to 26 August, 2000 phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration were measured in the Barents and Kara Seas. Total of 57 surface samples were collected f3r the phytoplankton related measurements. Chlorophyll a (chi a) concentraitons were measured to investigate the relations between physico-chemical factors and phytoplankton biomass distribution. Chl a values ranged from 0.14 to $2.34mg\;m^{-3}$ (mean of $0.65{\pm}0.42mg\;m^{-3}$) over the surface stations. The elevated values of the chi a concentrations $(1.49{\sim}2.34mg\;m^{-3})$ were found in the southeastern Barents Sea near the Pechora River. Nanoplanktonic $(<20{\mu}m)$ phytoflagellates were the important contributors for the increase of the chi a. The nano-sized phytoflagellates accounted for more than 80% of the total chi a biomass in the study area. Mean chi a concentration in the Barents Sea $(0.72{\pm}0.57 mg\;m^{-3})$ was higher than in the Kan Sea $(0.52{\pm}0.45mg\;m^{-3})$, but there was no big difference between two areas. Surface temperatures and salinities ranged from 4.1 to $11.7^{\circ}C$ (mean of $8.8{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$) and from 23.8 to 32.5psu (mean of $30.3{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ psu), respectively. The physical factors were not highly correlated with phytoplankton distribution. It is speculated that the insignificant correlation between phytoplankton biomass and physical factor was due to the same current which introduced similar water mass with higher water temperature and lower salinity into the study area. The mean values of major nutrients such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were $0.42{\pm}0.31{\mu}M,\;0.10{\pm}0.03{\mu}M,\;1.44{\pm}1.03{\mu}M,\;0.35{\pm}0.12{\mu}M,\;10.99{\pm}3.45{\pm}M$, respectively. The relations between phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentration were not close, indicating that the surface nutrient concentrations during the study seem to be controlled by other physical factors such as input of fresh water (i.e. dilution effects).

Uncertainty analysis on the net flow discharge (NFD) influencing the long-term material transport and the simulation results of the salinity and COD concentration distribution using the MIKE21 diffusion model in Gyeonggi bay and Han-River estuary is carried out. The NFD flowing the Gyodongdo - Seokmodo channel via the North channel of Ganghwado is estimated about 97% of the total NFD and the NFD of the Yeomha channel is estimated as only $2.5{\sim}3.0%$. On the other hand, the uncertainty defined as the difference by the different time-scale data input is analysed by the comparison of the model simulation result of the salinity and COD concentration distribution. One is computed based on the daily river flow data, and the other is computed based on the monthlymean river flow data. The results show that the salinity and COD concentration differences are about -10~20 psu and ${\pm}1.0\;mg/L$ during the summer season having a high flow discharge in Yeomha channel, respectively. The difference is clearly negligible in the open sea area.
Water temperature during the culturing period was 10.4-25.5$^{\circ}C$ and there was a little difference between rearing sites. Salinity (25.00-31.17 psu) and DO (over 6.13 mg/l) showed reasonable condition for the growth of bay scallop. Concentrations of chlorophyll-a were ranged 1.69-7.40 $^{\mu}$g/l, and they fluctuated monthly in the every sampling site. During the growing period from June to October, dominant phytoplankton species were Ceratium sp. in Nammeon and Hoejin, Chaetoceros sp. in Dolsan. Density of phytoplankton was high in July, August and October, but it was low in September and November. When young bay scallops were cultured for 185 days in Nammyeon, Hoejin and Dolsan, shell heights were grown for 0.19 mm/day, 0.18 mm/day and 0.16 mm/day, respectively, and total weights were increased 0.16 g/day, 0.16 g/day and 0.13 g/day, respectively. Daily growth rates of shell height were 0.606%, 0.581% and 0.549%, and daily growth rates of total weight were 1.972%, 1.857% and 1.746%, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model were 52.62 mm, 51.74 mm and 48.91 mm, respectively. Survival rate was the highest in Nammyeon (87.0%), but the rates in Hoejin and Dolsan sharply decreased after November.
The aim of this study was to test if 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) are involved in the osmoregulatory actions in euryhaline starry flounder Platichthys stellatus. We investigated osmoregulatory parameters ($Na^+,\;Cl^-$ and osmolality), blood cortisol and glucose in starry flounder acclimated to seawater (SW, 33 psu) and that were transferred and allowed to acclimate to freshwater (FW, 0 psu). Fish in SW were injected with T3 (5, 10, and $15{\mu}g$/g body weight) or vehicle (0.9% NaCl), and then transferred to FW. They were sampled 3 days after the transfer. With T3 at $10{\mu}g$/g, levels of plasma $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ were significantly higher than in sham (only saline) and control fish (without hormone and saline). Osmolality was significantly higher after injection with T3 at 10 and $15{\mu}g$/g than in the control. However, T3 at $5{\mu}g$/g had no effect on hyper-osmoregulation. In this study, all dose of T3 induced a significant increases in plasma cortisol without glucose. These results suggest a positive hyper-osmoregulatory role of T3 in starry flounder to hypoosmotic environment, maybe a positive interaction of T3 with cortisol for maintenance of hyper-osmoregulatory ability.
Long-term data (Ministry of Environment Water Quality Monitoring data) of phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) and water quality were analyzed to investigate trends in biomass of the primary producers and water quality for the estuarine systems in Korea: Sumjin River, Han River, Asan Lake- Bay, Youngsan River, Keum River and Nakdong River. The literatures were also reviewed to examine the characteristics of phytoplankton biomass and water quality in the estuarine systems. The Sumjin River estuary, the single estuary without a dike in Korea showed the characteristics similar to other typical estuarine systems. Phytoplankton biomass was high during the fall at transitional regions (5 ${\sim}$ 15 psu) after riverine freshwater inputs were increased in summer. Concentrations of the nitrate and silicate were increased with the high river discharge rates. Phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the lower regions in the Han River whereas phytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations were high during spring at the upper regions in the Youngsan River. Phytoplankton biomass was the highest in the Asan Lake and nutrient concentrations were high at the upper region of the lake. In Nakdong River, phytoplankton biomass was high during winter and the biomass was slightly higher at upper region than at lower region. Long-term trends showed that total nitrogen and total phosphorus were mostly increased in the river systems. Implications of these results relevant to the water quality management for the river systems were also discussed.
To evaluate the climate change impacts on water resources, this study generates and analyzes the climate change scenarios for 139 sub-basins in Korea using high resolution ($27km\;{\times}\; 27km$) SHES A2 scenario and LARS-WG. The $27km\;{\times}\; 27km$ high resolution NCAR/PSU MM5 scenario is downscaled from 350km horizontal resolution ECHO-G data. The A2 scenario relatively well reproduced Korean spatial precipitation characteristics, but it underestimated the precipitation over the Han River and the Gum River basins. The LARS-WG was selected and evaluated to overcome the limitation of climate model and to create a highly reliable climate scenario. The results show that the monthly mean minimum and maximum temperature and monthly mean precipitation are within ${\pm}20%$ from the observed mean, and ${\pm}50%$ from the standard deviation that represents the generated data are highly reliable. Moreover, the comparison results between observed data and generated data from LARS-WG show that the latter can reflect the regional climate characteristic very well that can not be simulated from the former.
