  • 2-Ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate were polymerized to synthesize acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA). Alumina and graphite as a filler were added to acrylic PSA to give thermal conductivity. In case of addition of both graphite and alumina, the thermal conductivity of PSA was increased compared with alumina alone due to enhancement of contact between two fillers followed by increasing thermal path in PSA matrix.

  • Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) was prepared by semi-batch emulsion polymerization of acryl monomers in the presence of reactive and non-reactive carboxylated polyurethane resin (PUR). Effects of the PUR type, its content, and crosslinker feeding method on the adhesive properties of the PSA was investigated. In this experiment, the PSA prepared with the reactive PUR showed better adhesive property then the PSA with the non-reactive PUR. Especially, peel strength of the PSA, where acetoacetoxy ethyl methacrylate and 1,6-hexane diamine as crosslinkers were introduced, was dramatically enhanced in severe humidity condition due to the interfacial crosslinking.

  • The effects of various pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) and enhancers on the percutaneous absorption of tulobuterol were investigated. The permeation rate of tulobuterol through hairless mouse skin from various adhesives was evaluated using a flow-through diffusion cell system at $37^{\circ}C$. The permeability of tulobuterol was variable depending on the physicochemical property of the PSA. The permeation rate of tulobuterol from polyethylene oxide grafted acrylic adhesive matrix was higher than that from other PSA matrices. The flux of tulobuterol was $4.37{\pm}0.34\;{\mu}g/hr/cm^2$ from polyethylene oxide grafted acrylic adhesive matrix. When the effects of various enhancers on the percutaneous absorption of tulobuterol from grafted acrylic adhesive were evaluated, Plurol $oleique^{\circledR}$ showed higher flux than all other enhancers tested.

  • An environmentally friendly water-based pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) was designed in an attempt to replace the solvent-based adhesive for dry lamination used in flexible food packaging films. Instead of using a low molecular weight surfactant, which may have variable material properties, a high molecular weight dispersant was used for emulsification. A polymeric nano-dispersant (PND) was synthesized using solution polymerization, and it was used as a micelle seed in the surfactant, resulting in the synthesis of a core/shell grafted acrylic adhesive. The shell and core exhibited different $T_g$ values, so that the initial adhesion strength and holding power were complemented by the film's flexibility, which is required to provide good adhesion of thin films. Results showed that the PSA designed in this study using the PND instead of traditional low molecular weight surfactant had adhesive properties applicable to the flexible packaging with appropriate tack.

  • In this study, the acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) for the optical functionality sheet was prepared by blending liquid isoprene rubber. The acrylic PSA was synthesized with butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Toluene was used to a solvent for polymerization. Liquid isoprene rubber (LIR-50) was blended with the acrylic PSA and blend ratio was 0 ~ 50 wt%. According to the results, the adhesive transfer, which was the big problem of acrylic adhesive, was reduced with the addition of LIR-50. The secondary bonding of LIR-50 with substrate did not occurred due to absence of polar group in LIR-50. The peel strength and adhesive transfer were decreased by UV curing and the degreed of decrease depended on the amounts of photoinitiator and UV irradiation time. On the other hand holding power increased drastically by increasing amounts of photoinitiator and UV irradiation time.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of salt formation on the percutaneous absorption of meloxicam through hairless mouse skin from a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) matrix. In addition, the influences of enhancers on the permeation of meloxicam or meloxicam-ethanolamine (MX-EA) salts across the hairless mouse skin were evaluated using a flow-through diffusion cell system. The salt formation of meloxicam resulted in lower permeation rate than the parent drug. $Span^{(R)}$ 80 provided the highest enhancing effect for meloxicam and meloxicam monoethanolamine salt. The maximum amount of the drug that can be loaded without retarding permeation rate was different depending on the compound. No relationship was found between the fluxes of meloxicam or MX-EA salts from saturated solutions and those from PSA matrices containing the same enhancer.

  • Acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes were used for the automotive, the electrical and the electronic industries and the display module junction. In this study, the manufacture of high-strength structural tape used 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (2-EHA) and acrylic acid (AAC), and UV irradiation for photo-polymerization, and the semi-structural properties of acrylic PSA tape with the AAC content and inorganic filler $SiO_2$ content were investigated. The initial adhesion strength was lowered by the rigidity of molecule chains due to the use of AAC, and the adhesion strength increased with increasing wetting time. The wetability, contact angle, and SEM images of PSA tapes with various contents of AAC were determined. Without filler, the peel strength and dynamic shear strength of PSA tape showed inverse correlation but the peel strength and dynamic shear strength increased with increasing filler content. From these correlations the PSA tapes could be optimized for the applications requiring high performance.

  • The viscosity for hi-solid pressure sensitive adhesive to improve water soluble low viscosity pressure sensitive adhesive polymerized using seeded polymerization. While seed binder polymerizing it produces an optimum polymerization condition, and acrylic acid and seed binder concentration changed were measurement of viscosity variation and adhesive power at the substrate (SUS420J) as flowing results. In adhesive polymerization, seed binder concentration 7 wt%/monomer was recovered 60% of solid content, 2,100 cps of low viscosity and clear adhesive film. When acrylic acid content was 4 wt%/monomer, it was turned excellent adhesive power and holding power.

  • To investigate the feasibility of developing a new ondansetron transdermal system, the effects of vehicles and penetration enhancers on the in vitro permeation of ondansetron hydrochloride (OS) from a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) matrices across dorsal hairless mouse skin were studied. Vehicles employed in this study consisted of various ratios of propylene glycol monocaprylate (PGMC)-diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DGME) co-solvents and PGMC-propylene glycol (PG) co-solvents with 3% oleic acid. $Duro-Tak^\circledR$ 87-2100 and $Duro-Tak^\circledR$ 87-2196 were used as PSAs. The concentration of DGME in PGMC-DGME co-solvent system affected the release rate; as the concentration of DGME increased, the release rate decreased. The cumulative release amount of OS increased as the ratio of PSA to drug solution decreased. The permeation flux was also primarily affected by the amount of PSAs; as the amount decreased, the permeation flux increased. The overall fluxes from matrix formulations were significantly lower when compared to those obtained from solution formulations. The ratio of PG to PGMC did not affect permeation flux, while the lag time decreased significantly from $5.14\pm3.31 to 0.31\pm0.12$ h as the PG increased from 40% to 60%.
