  • Two cases with circumferential grooves were designed for a transonic compressor, and 3-D numerical simulations were conducted for stall mechanism at three representative speeds. A conclusion can be drawn from the comparison between compressors with or without casing treatment that: with the rising of rotation speed, stall margin increases dramatically under the help of casing treatments, and the case with middle grooves has reasonable compromise between stall margin increment and efficiency cutting. At lower speed, the increment reduces, and grooves at the back of blade tip have more influence on stall margin. Further investigation shows there is a transition in mechanism of compressor stall with the decline of rotational speed: at high rotation speed, the expansion of stall margin mainly results from the suppression of tip leakage vortex by casing treatments, yet it benefits more from the depression of boundary layer separation from suction surface of blade tip.

  • A numerical study is conducted to investigate propulsion performance enhancement based on S225 experiment case of ISL(French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis)'s superdetonative ram accelerator. For govern equation, multi-species Navier-Stokes equation coupled with Baldwin-Lomax turbulence modeling is used. Govern equation is discretized by Roe's FDS and integrated by LU-SGS time integration. Detailed chemical reaction about $H_2/O_2/CO_2$ for high pressure is considered. $2H_2+O_2+2.5CO_2$ mixture was used for propellant gas. For the same over-driven factor, the launching speed of computation was faster than one of S225. Another configuration and condition of S225 was applied. A flame structure is very different from S225. For strong mixture case, it shows ignition by viscous effect. Acceleration and speed increment is higher than S225 computation and experiment. By using more strong mixture, propulsion performance was enhanced.

  • The feasibility of Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) Ship Propulsion using Superconduction Magnets is reviewed in light of relent advances in high-temperature superconducting. The propulsion using a screw propeller in the noise reduction has it's own limitation. The epochal noiseless MHD propulsion method which does not have this disadvantage is studying nowadays. The subject of a marine MHD as propulsion has been examined before and was found to be interesting because of relatively low magnetic flux densities. It is demonstrated that the MHD propulsion is technically interesting with high magnetic flux density. The development of large-scale magnets using the high-temperature superconductor now under development could make it practical to construct submersibles for high-speed and silent operation.

  • This paper deals with the design and characteristic analysis of electro-magnet/permanent-magnet (EM-PM) hybrid levitation and propulsion device for high-speed magnetically levitated (maglev) vehicle. The machine requires PMs with high coercive force in order to levitate the vehicle by only PMs, and propulsion force is supplied by long-stator linear synchronous motor (LSM). The advantages of this configuration are an increasing levitation airgap length and decreasing total weight of the vehicle, because of the zero-power levitation control. Several design considerations such as machine structure, manufacturing, and control strategy are described. Moreover, the levitation and propulsion device for high-speed maglev vehicle has been designed and analyzed usign the electromagnetic circuit and FE analysis. In order to verify the design scheme and feasibility of maglev application, 3-DOF static force test set is implemented and tested. The obtained experimental data using the static tester shows the validity of the design and analysis approaches.

  • The Laminar lifted methane jet flames diluted with helium and nitrogen in co-flow air have been investigated experimentally. The chemiluminescence intensities of $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ radicals and the radius of curvature for tri-brachial flame were measured using an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera, monochromator and digital video camera. The product of $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ is used as a excellent proxy of heat release rate. These methane jet flames could be lifted in buoyancy and jet dominated regimes despite the Schmidt number less than unity. Lifted flames were stabilized due to buoyancy induced convection in buoyancy-dominated regime. It was confirmed that increased $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ concentration caused an increase of edge flame speed via enhanced chemical reaction in buoyancy dominated regime. In jet momentum dominated regime lifted flames were observed even for nozzle exit velocities much higher than stoichiometric laminar flame speed. An increase in radius of curvature in addition to the increased $OH^{\ast}$ and $CH_2O^{\ast}$ concentration stabilizes such lifted flames.

  • The previously developed method of estimating the propulsion performance of a UUV was applied to the high speed UUV, which is propelled by commercial thrusters. The thrusters were selected with an overdesign mentality; in other words, their capacities were excessive. At that point, the designer's concern was focused on a question regarding at what rpm the UUV could reach the design speed. Because the developed method required thrust coefficient curve data, the researchers asked for the POW data of the thrusters from the manufacturer. From the data, the researchers extracted the thrust coefficient and estimated the rpm value of design speed for the UUV. Finally, the researchers compared the estimated value and the result from a self-propulsion test using a VPMM (Vertical planar motion mechanism) test at a towing tank in MOERI.

  • Currently, vector control is used for speed control of trains because induction motor has high performance is installed in Electric railroad systems. Also, control of the induction motor is possible through various methods by developing inverters and control theory. Presently, rolling stocks which use the induction motor are possible to brake trains by using AC motor. Therefore model of motor block and induction motor is needed to adapt various methods. There is Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) as the control method of the induction motor. The torque and speed is controlled in the VVVF. The propulsion system model in the electric railroad has many sub-systems. So, the analysis of performance of the speed control is very complex. In this paper, simulation models are suggested by using Matlab/Simulink in the speed control characteristic. On the basis of the simulation models, the response to disturbance input is analyzed about the load. Also, the current, speed and flux control model are proposed to analyze the speed control characteristic in the train propulsion system.

  • In position detection for super speed maglev propulsion control, the influence of position signal delay and transmit cycle on propulsion power degradation is investigated analytically and validated by test bed experiments. As a solution to the problem caused by signal transmit, position signal compensation and estimation method is proposed and applied to the test bed. Through experiments, it is confirmed that by adapting the proposed method, the propulsion power is increased remarkably, which results in acceleration and velocity performance improvement. This method could be effectively applied to position detection system of Korean super speed maglev which is under development.

  • In this study, the synchronous control system is designed to restrain the speed difference generated between two propellers, namely, synchronous error in a dual electric propulsion system of unmanned surface vehicle, fish finder boat, etc. The control system based on coupling structure is composed of pre-filters and speed controllers for each propulsion system and a synchronous controller cross-coupled between two propulsion systems. The pre-filter and speed controller are designed in order that the propulsion system may follow the speed reference without overshoot and input saturation. And the synchronous controller is designed in consideration of damping and quickness of the synchronous controller system after analyzing effect of the skew disturbance and mismatched dynamic characteristics on synchronous error. Finally, the simulation results show that the designed control system is effective for elimination of synchronous error.
