  • We developed an analysis software that automatically detects incoming isotopes for multi-purpose gamma-ray detectors. The software is divided into three major parts; Network Interface Module (NIM), Spectrum Analysis Module (SAM), and Graphic User Interface Module (GUIM). The main part is SAM that extracts peak information of energy spectrum from the collected data through network and identifies the isotopes by comparing the peaks with pre-calibrated libraries. The proposed peak detection algorithm was utilized to construct libraries of standard isotopes with two peaks and to identify the unknown isotope with the constructed libraries. We tested the software by using GammaPro1410 detector developed by NuCare Medical Systems. The results showed that NIM performed 200K counts per seconds and the most isotopes tested were correctly recognized within 1% error range when only a single unknown isotope was used for detection test. The software is expected to be used for radiation monitoring in various applications such as hospitals, power plants, and research facilities etc.

  • Pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) is a quite new technique for power generation using an osmotically driven membrane process. In the PRO process, water permeates through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentration feed solution to a high concentration draw solution due to osmotic pressure. This study carried out to evaluate the performance of the 8 in spiral wound membrane module using reverse osmosis concentrate for a draw solution and reverse osmosis permeate for a feed solution. Three different flowrates of draw and feed solution, such as 2.4 L/min, 5.0 L/min, and 10.0 L/min were used to estimate the power density and water flux under various range of hydraulic pressure differences between 5 bar and 30 bar. In addition, the effects of feed and draw solution concentration, flowrate, and mixing ratio on 8 in spiral wound PRO membrane module performance were investigated in this study. As major results, increases of the draw solution concentration lead to the improvement of power denstiy, and water flux. Also, increase of flowrate resulted in the improvement of power density and water flux. In addition, optimal mixing ratio of draw and feed solution inlet flowrate was found to be 1:1 to attain a maximum power denstiy.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop learning modules for environmental education using goal-based scenarios and to examine their pedagogical benefits at the elementary educational level. To enhance environmental knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavior, this research developed learning modules relevant to three sub-dimensions of environmental education: education about environment, education in environment, and education for environment. In particular, this study provided useful educational strategies based on students' everyday lives. The developed modules consisted of three parts: 1) acquiring knowledge concerning the cause of global warming, 2) practicing and internalizing environmental knowledge in students' everyday lives, and 3) extending and disseminating environmental knowledge and awareness to other people. After applying the modules, the students acquired knowledge regarding the causes of global warming through discussions with their peers, and furthermore, exercised pro-environmental behaviors in their everyday lives. Moreover, the participants created UCC to urge other people to act for environment.

  • In the spiral wound module of the pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) system for the salinity gradient power generation, effects of the inlet pressure differences between feed-channel and draw-channel were studied. Fluxes of water and solute through membrane and power were estimated. The water flux through membrane decreased along the x-direction and increased along the y-direction with the increase of inlet pressure differences between two channels. On the other hand, the solute flux through membrane showed the opposite trend. The concentration of flow in the feed-channel increased a lot along the y-direction and that in the draw-channel decreased along the x-direction. In our system, for the inlet pressure differences of 1~11 atm, the flow rate in the feed-channel decreased about 8~13% and that in the draw-channel increased by the same amount. The power density increased and then decreased with the increasing inlet pressure difference.

  • The modern software technology toward modularization has changed the cache accessing behavior dramatically. Many modern operating systems are also departing from the past monolithic structure toward the highly modularized structure referred to as microkernel. Microkernel-based operating systems are more portable and extensible, but are likely to have worse performance. This paper quantitatively analyzes the effect of microkernel structure on cache memory to identify the primary factor for its performance degradation. Through the experiment performed on a Intel Pentium Pro processor platform, we found that the microkernel structure suffers from remarkably higher misses for L1, L2 cache and TLB than the monolithic one does. We also found that the performance of a microkernel is more dependent on the efficiency of cache memory than IPC. Finally, we found that these results come from the effect of frequent context switches mainly caused by the structural feature of a microkernel.

  • Cattle behavior detection system based on Internet of Things is designed and implemented by using gyroscope and acceleration sensor, Arduino pro-mini and bluetooth module. The implemented system measures cattle's moving and the measured data are transmitted to smart phone by bluetooth module. They are displayed by 2-dimensional graph on the smart phone and the number of cattle's step are calculated from the graph. The detected and gathered data from the system are analyzed by the proposed algorithm to decide which cows are in the estrus or not, and the proposed system can be used to increase the success rate of artificial insemination in normal estrus by detecting cow's behaviors such as the number of steps and jumping. In this paper, the implemented cattle behavior detecting system are strapped on cattle's leg and it measures cattle behaviors for determining that a cattle is estrus or not by the proposed algorithm. In the future research, the system which lengthens communication distance and increases the number of cattle under the test will be considered and also the measured data will be database for cattle research.

  • This paper addresses a method for evaluating perceived velocities of the graphic module in a driving simulator. The major two graphic factors associated with perceived velocities are analyzed: they are the lateral distance between a virtual driver and an array of environmental objects and the textural density of these objects. A graphical representation of a vehicle and its surrounding environment are constructed by employing a three-dimensional tool, Pro/ENGINEER and a virtual environment, dVISE. Using the developed virtual driving environment, experiments have been carried out to formulate the relationship between velocity perception and each factor. Based on the experimental results, nonlinear regression equations are derived to show how the perceived velocities are dependent upon distance/density.

  • Several low-cost global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers do not support general range-domain correction, and DGNSS-CP (differential GNSS) method had been suggested to solve this problem. It improves its position accuracy by projecting range-domain corrections to the position-domain and then differentiating the stand-alone position by the projected correction. To project the range-domain correction, line-of-sight vectors from the receiver to each satellite should be calculated. The line-of-sight vectors can be obtained from GNSS broadcast ephemeris data or satellite direction information, and this paper shows positioning performance for the two methods. Stand-alone positioning result provided from Septentrio PolaRx4 Pro receiver was used to show the difference. The satellite direction information can reduce the computing load for the DGNSS-CP by 1/15, even though its root mean square(RMS) of position error is bigger than that of ephemeris data by 0.1m.
