  • This paper proposes a new answering mechanism called RAM (Risk Answering Mechanism) which can be applied to a contingent valuation method. The RAM is derived from the theory of expected utility maximization under the assumption that there exists an uncertainty in a nonmarket good of interest. In RAM, a respondent would accept an uncertain offer only if his or her WTP for the mean of the offer is large enough to exceed the bidding price by more than a risk premium. This is in a striking contrast with a traditional answering mechanism (TAM) in which the WTP is simply compared with the bidding price. Therefore, the TAM would underestimate the WTP by a risk premium without considering the uncertainty a respondent may face. An empirical comparison is made between RAM and TAM using a survey data on the Tong river. It is found that underestimation problem is very serious in the TAM.

  • In this study, we examined whether common idiosyncratic volatility(CIV), a risk factor for idiosyncratic volatility, can be evaluated as a pricing factor. The sample is listed on the Korea Exchange. The analysis period is 288 months from July 1992 to June 2016. The main results of this study are as follows. First, in the empirical verification of the market excess returns of the testing portfolios, the difference in the return on the CIV factor sensitivity difference was statistically significant. In other words, we confirmed that there is a risk premium for CIV factors. Second, CAPM, FF3 factor model, and FF5 factor model do not explain the risk premium for CIV factors, whereas factor models that add CIV factors explain the risk premium for CIV factors. In other words, the CIV factor can be evaluated in terms of pricing factors.

  • Recently, Internet service providers are offering triple play service which combines voice and video services with the existing high speed Internet service under the common network infrastructure of IP protocol, so that they can create more benefit from operating a single network architecture. In line with this movement in the convergence of network and services, in this work we propose a bandwidth dimensioning method for the subscriber network of the IP network at flow level. To that purpose, let us propose a series of bandwidth dimensioning methods: bandwidth for best effort service only, bandwidth dimensioning for premium services, and bandwidth dimensioning schemes for the premium Internet services as well as the best effort service which comprise the TPS. Our link dimensioning method is based on the flow level that incorporates the flow blocking probability as a measure of grade of services(GoS), and investigates the characteristics of the proposed methods via extensive numerical experiments. After that, let us carry out a simulation experiment concerning the delay and loss performance of the packet scheduling for the premium services (QoS) using the bandwidth designed by our proposed method, via which the packet level quality of service (QoS) for the proposed link dimensioning method can be observed.

  • This study was designed to investigate factors relating to fiscal deficit for regional health insurance. The financial statements for the fiscal year 1990 of nationwide 254 regional medical insurance societies were analyzed. Important findings are summarized below: 1. There were differences in the main reason fur the financial deficit among regions when deficit and surplus societies were compared by regions. The total revenue per enrollee, especially revenue from the premium contribution of a deficit society was significantly smaller than that of a surplus society in large cities and counties. On the other hand, the total expenditure per enrollee of a deficit society was larger than that of a surplus society in small cities. 2. Both low premium rate at the beginning of health insurance program and less effort to increase the premium rate were main factors for the smaller revenue from the contribution of a deficit society in large cities and counties. 3. Larger expenditures per covered person of a deficit society in small cities were explained with larger medical expenditures especially for out-patients services rather than larger administrative expenses. 4. A regression analysis showed that utilization rates in out-patient services were significantly associated with income and numbers of total medical care institution per capita within a region where a health insurance society located. Also expenses paid by insurer per visit were associated with the proportion of utilization for tertiary care hospitals as well as the proportion of utilization of public health centers.

  • Brand space is one of the important elements of urban cultural space and can stimulate the urban culture as a significant landmark. Thus, it is necessary to develop factors for evaluating the communication with users in brand spaces. In particular, factors for evaluating the psychological, emotional aspects of users is essential. This study is aimed at developing evaluation factors with a space marketing perspective through an user behavioral analysis. As for research method, the emotional responses of users will be examined and analyzed through an eye-tracking device. First, The researcher will visit brand spaces and take photos of them to collect data and analyze the status. Second, we filled out the questionnaire based on analytical framework and selected 20 architectural students for survey. Third, Eye-tracking experiment will be conducted. Forth, Space design marketing evaluation factors will be established based on the results. Final, suggestions for future research based on the analysis results. When the 30 images of premium supermarkets were used for the survey, men were more sensitive to the store design. But women were more sensitive to the quality or store accessibility. Also, the furniture factor was most important for women, and spatial factor was most important for men. When the eye-tracking experiment was done as to the 5 selected brand spaces, both men and women looked at the furniture factor that includes the showcases more than anything else. It shows the same result as the previous survey.

  • This study analyzes the contribution to the national economy of the stable water supply through managing multi-purpose dam. For the analysis, we consider 17 major multi-purpose dams and build a CGE model with summer water and winter water being the production factors as the base year of 2007. We analyze the economic impact of meeting water demand due to the dam management and estimate the risk premium of reducing the uncertainty of water supply. The analysis results show a significant production decrease in the industries of agriculture, forestry and fisheries and tap water as well as the food and beverage industry using the former industries' output as intermediates in the production and show an production increase largely in steel industry and electronic and electrical industries. Being compared to the benchmark solution, GNP is analyzed as being reduced by 0.22~0.68%. Meanwhile, the risk premium is estimated to be about 4 billion to 24 billion won for the value 01 the measure of relative risk aversion in the range 01 0.5 to 3.0.

  • This study investigates the status of English scores in the Korean labor market. We provide an empirical explanation of how English scores affect labor performances in Korea. Specifically, we focus on the effects of TOEIC scores on college graduates' job opportunity and wage premium. Our empirical tests for TOEIC scores are implemented in three dimensions: (1) Screening effects (2) Signaling effects (3) Wage effects. The results are as follows. First, we find the positive correlation between TOEIC scores and job opportunities, which implies that TOEIC scores play an important role in employee selection process. Second, our tests give the same results when it comes to job seeker's use of TOEIC scores as signaling instrument. That is, high TOEIC scores have positive signaling effects in the labor market. However, there also exists disadvantage effect of low TOEIC scores, in that job applicants with TOEIC scores below certain level are even more disadvantageous than those with no TOEIC scores. Finally, wage premium of TOEIC scores are found, even when other variables (e.g. GPA) are controlled or we use the instrumental variable estimate.

  • An assumption for fractional ages should be made to obtain the net premium of the whole life insurance payable at the moment of death based on the life table. Most existing studies adopt the assumption of the uniform distribution(UDD) for the fractional ages. However, as seasonal changes may frequently lead to the deaths of elderly people, it is questionable whether the assumption of the uniform distribution is the most appropriate one for the entire age intervals. In this article, based on a real mortality data set, the appropriateness of UDD assumption for the entire age intervals is examined. And then we propose a more suitable model for fractional ages. We analyze the effect of UDD assumption through the net premium and the corresponding risk when the true distribution for the fractional ages is not uniform.

  • The Health care program in Korea has now been systemized after 30 years of declaring the inauguration of the national health insurance system by the current government. The national health care covering all Korean citizens was achieved after 12 years of implementing the national health insurance and the health care program since 1977. Hundreds of multiple operational agencies managing the insured individually had undergone the amalgamation process from 1998 to 2000, and had been restructured as one agency, the National Health Insurance Corporation. In 2003, the community/area based financial management was also merged together with the employment based financial management. The National health care system of Korea offer various merits, compared with that of other countries, such as health care provision covering all Koreans, low insurance premium, accessibility of medical services/facilities etc. However, there are still some weak features which need to be addressed for improvement; below expectation insurance cover system, mistrust on the medical services, low medical charges resulted from excessive restrictions, and unstable financial status of the national health insurance etc. Therefore, the National health care system should continue to evolve to re-establish itself as more effective national health care system by further strengthening its merits, and by improving its weaknesses; with adopting the positive system to optimize the costs of prescribed medicines/drugs, applying simpler insurance coverage system to calculate the optimum medical charges, promoting private medical insurances, and increasing insurance premium etc.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sustainability management (SM) at coffee houses on customers' store image and behavioral intention. In addition, customers' willingness to pay a premium for sustainable coffee houses was studied. During October 2011, a web survey was conducted via an on-line research company with customers aged 20 to 39 visiting one of the top five coffee houses in Korea at least once a month. A total of 300 targeted customers responded and all the data were analyzed. An exploratory factor analysis derived two dimensions of SM: SM in Social and Environmental Perspective and SM in Economic Perspective. The result of structural equation modeling indicated that SM in Economic Perspective at coffee houses had a significant positive effect on customers' behavioral intention with mediating effect by store image, but SM in Social and Environmental Perspective did not have such effect. Approximately one-third (31%) of the respondents were willing to pay a premium for a sustainable coffee house in a scenario. approximately 84% of the respondents unwilling to pay a premium for the sustainable coffee house chose the cost-related reasons including "Coffee price at the coffee house that they most often visit is already expensive (62.3%)" for such unwillingness. The results of this study showed that SM of coffee houses, especially that in Economic Perspective, could contribute to store image, and therefore increase customers' favorable behavioral intention, although the additional cost resulted from such SM practices might not be easily accommodated by customers.
