Over the past few decades, seismic retrofitting of structural systems has been significantly improved by the adoption of various methods such as FRP composite wraps, base isolation systems, and passive/active damper control systems. In parallel with this trend, probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) for structural and nonstructural components has become necessary for risk mitigation and the achievement of reliable designs in performance-based earthquake engineering. The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect on piping fragility at T-joints due to seismic retrofitting of structural systems with passive energy-dissipation devices (i.e., linear viscous dampers). Three mid-rise building types were considered: without any seismic retrofitting; with distributed damper systems; with optimal placement of dampers. The results showed that the probability of piping system failure was considerably reduced in a Multi Degree of Freedom (MDOF) building retrofitted with optimal passive damper systems at lower floor levels. This effect of damper systems on piping fragility became insignificant as the floor level increased.
In this paper, systematic and comprehensive approaches are suggested for the application of quantitative PRA techniques especially for those risk events that cannot be easily evaluated quantitatively In addition, dominant risk events are identified based on their occurrence frequency assessed by both actual survey of construction site conditions and the statistical data related with the probable accidents. Practical FTA(Fault Tree Analysis) and ETA(Event Tree Analysis) models are used for the assessment of the identified risks. When the risk events are lack of statistical data, appropriate Bayesian models incorporating engineering judgement and test results are also introduced in this paper. Moreover, a fuzzy probability technique is used for the quantitative risk assessment of those risk components which are difficult to evaluate quantitatively.
Many long railway tunnels without emergency evacuation system or ventilation system are under construction or in-use in Korea. In the case of tunnel-fire, many fatalities are occur in current condition. Current safety level is estimated in this study, for the efficient investment on safety. But so many uncertainties in major input parameters make the safety estimation difficult. In this study, probabilistic techniques are applied for the consideration of uncertainties in major input parameters. As results of this study, accident scenarios and survival ratio under tunnel fire accident are determined for various conditions.
The railway human reliability analysis (R-HRA) plays a role of identifying and assessing human failure events in the framework of the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) of the railway systems. This paper reviews three existing HRA methods including the K-HRA (THERP/ASEP-based) method, the HEART method, the RSSB-HRA method, and introduces a case study that was performed to select an appropriate method for a railway risk assessment. The case is the signal passed at danger (SPAD) events, which are caused from a variety of factors. From the case study, the strengths and limitations of each method were derived and compared with each other from the viewpoint of the applicability to the railway industry.
This paper presents a new approach for assessing accident management strategies using containment event trees (CETs) developed during an individual plant examination (IPE) for a reference plant (CE type, 950 MWe PWR). Various accident management strategies to reduce risk have been proposed through IPE. Three strategies for the station blackout sequence are used as an example : 1) reactor cavity flooding only, 2) primary system depressurization only, and 3) doing both. These strategies are assumed to be initiated at about the time of core uncovery. The station blackout (SBO) sequence is selected in this paper since it is identified as one of the most threatening sequences to safety of the reference plant. The effectiveness and adverse effects of each accident management strategy are considered synthetically in the CETs. A best estimate assessment for the developed CETs using data obtained from NUREG-1150, other PRA results, and the MAAP code calculations is performed. The strategies are ranked with respect to minimizing the frequencies of Various containment failure modes. The proposed approach is demonstrated to be very flexible in that it can be applied to any kind of accident management strategy for any sequence.

Pseudorandom numbers are useful in cryptographic operations for using as nonce, initial vector, secret key, etc. Security of the cryptosystem relies on the secret key parameters, so a good pseudorandom number is needed. In this paper, we have proposed a new approach for generation of pseudorandom number. This method uses the three dimensional combinational puzzle Rubik Cube for generation of random numbers. The number of possible combinations of the cube approximates to 43 quintillion. The large possible combination of the cube increases the complexity of brute force attack on the generator. The generator uses cryptographic hash function. Chaotic map is being employed for increasing random behavior. The pseudorandom sequence generated can be used for cryptographic applications. The generated sequences are tested for randomness using NIST Statistical Test Suite and other testing methods. The result of the tests and analysis proves that the generated sequences are random.
Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) has improved its elemental technologies used for assessing external events since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident in 2011. HRA needs to be improved for analyzing tasks performed under extreme conditions (e.g., different actors responding to external events or performing operations using portable mitigation equipment). To make these improvements, it is essential to understand plant-specific and scenario-specific conditions that affect human performance. The Nuclear Risk Research Center (NRRC) of the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) has developed an HRA guide that compiles qualitative analysis methods for collecting plant-specific and scenario-specific conditions that affect human performance into "narratives," reflecting the latest research trends, and models for analysis of tasks under extreme conditions.
