Dyeing and fastness properties of a dyeable PP fiber were examined with four different types of disperse dyes. It was found that the dyed PP fiber could be cleared by soaping without using sodium hydrosulphite, and that the heat setting above $140^{\circ}C$ resulted in the melting of the PP fiber. The rates of dyeing and the extents of exhaustion of three primary E type dyes were different with each other, the apparent color strength did not increase with increasing dye concentration, and color fastness to washing was not satisfactory. In the cases of both high wash fastness and high light fastness dyes, the rates of dyeing were slow and the extents of exhaustion were very low. On the other hand, the dyeing rates of three primary S type dyes were similar and the build-up properties were good with good color fastnesses. It might be concluded that the best disperse dyes for the dyeable PP fiber were S type dyes.
This paper investigates experimentally the fire resistance performance and spatting resistance of high performance reinforced concrete column member subjected to fire containing polypropylene fiber(PP fiber) and cellulose fiber(CL fiber). An increase in PP fiber and CL fiber contents, respectively resulted in a reduction of fluidity due to fiber ball effect. Air content is constant with m increase in fiber content. Compressive strength reached beyond 50 MPa. Based on fire resistance test, severe failure occurred with control concrete specimen, which caused exposure of reinforcing bar. No spall occurred with specimen containing PP fiber. This is due to the discharge of internal vapour pressure. Use of CL fiber superior to control concrete in the side of spatting resistance, localized failure at comer of specimen was observed. Corner of specimen had deeper neutralization than surface of specimen. Specimen containing PP fiber had the least damaged area due to spatting. Neutralization depth ranged between 6 and 8 mm Residual compressive strength of specimen containing PP fiber maintained 40%, which is larger than control concrete with 20% of residual strength. Specimen containing CL fiber had 25% or residual strength.
A pultrusion resin impregnation (PRI) die, which has been developed recently in our laboratory, was used to pre-pare various composite system. The continuous fiber reinforced composites of glass fiber/polypropylene(GFPP) and glass fiber/polyamide 6 (GFPA) were first manufactured by means of the PRI die and then cut into chopped pellets of predet-ermined length. These pellets and either virgin or modified thermoplastic resin were melt-mixed by a twin screw extruder to prepare GF/PA/PP and GF/PA/PPMA system. The mechanical properties of these blends were investigated and discussed in terms of their morphological observations. These preliminary results revealed that this new impregnation die could be suc-cessfully applied to produce prepregs suitavle for the final shaping process.
In order to investigate the effect of the chemical treatment of bamboo fiber on physical properties of polypropylene (PP)/bamboo fiber (BF) composites, silane coupling agents such as ${\gamma}$-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane (GPS) and ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MRPS) were applied to BF and alkaline treated BF. Morphological properties of the chemically treated BF were confirmed by optical microscope and SEM measurements, and chemical structure changes were confirmed by FT-IR and EDS. TGA results showed that the thermal stability of silane treated BF increased. Based on the analysis of a universal testing machine and an Izod impact test, the flexural and impact properties of PP/silane treated BF composites showed higher values than those of PP/BF composites. The enhancement of interfacial adhesion properties of the PP/BF composite was checked from SEM images of the fracture of specimens after the tensile test.
This study investigated illite/polypropylene (PP) composite filament formation via melt-spinning and evaluated their physical properties to prepare functional fibers using natural materials. When composite filaments were formed, the composite filaments exhibited smaller fiber diameters compared to that of neat PP filament because of the lubricant effect of illite induced by its layered structure. Moreover, fluorination effect increased interfacial affinity and dispersion in the polymer, resulting in smaller diameter of fluorinated illite/PP composite filament, which was 2/3 of the neat PP filament diameter. Addition of raw and fluorinated illite improved thermal stability of illite/PP composite filament. Raw illite/PP composite filament cannot be used for a practical application, because it broke during drawing process, whereas the fluorinated illite/PP composite filament can be used for a practical application, because it exhibited similar tensile strength of the neat PP filament and 50% increased modulus. Even with improved illite/PP interfacial affinity and illite dispersion in the polymer, illite/PP composite filament formed microcomposite, because non-expandable illite had strongly bound layers, resulting in only a little illite exfoliation and PP intercalation into illite.

Recently, the effects of high temperature and fiber content on the residual mechnical properties of high-strength concrete were experimentally investigated. In this paper, residual mechanical properties of concrete with water to cement (w/c) ratios of 55%, 42% and 32% exposed to high temperature are compared with those obtained in fiber reinforced concretes of similar characteristics with the ranging of 0,05% to 0,20% polypropylene (PP) fibers by volume of concrete, and considered factors include pre-load levels (20% and 40% of the maximum load at room temperature). Outbreak time and water contents were tested and were determined the compressive strength. In the result, it is showed that to prevent the explosive spalling of 50MPa grade concretes exposed to high temperature need more than 0.05Vol.% PP fibers. Also, the cross-sectional area of PP fiber can influence on the residual mechanical properties and the spalling tendency of fiber reinforced concrete exposed to high temperature. Especially, the external loading increases not only the residual mechanical properties of concrete but also the risk of spalling and the brittle tendency.
High Strength Concrete has a disadvantage of the brittle failure under fire due to the spalling. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure under fire and polypropylene (PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The silica fume which is essentially mixed in high strength concrete decrease the permeability of concrete, and this will increase the degree of spalling. The fire resistance characteristics of high-strength reinforced concrete columns with various contents of PP fiber and silica fume were investigated in this study. In results, the ratio of unstressed residual strength of columns increases as the content of PP fiber increases from 0% to 0.2% and the ratio decreases as the content of silica fume increases from 7% to 21%.

This study is reviewed fire resistance characteristics of high strength concrete according to changes in PP fiber mixing ratio and type of fine aggregate, and the results can be summarized as follows. As fire resistance characteristics, all plain crushed sands prevented spalling regardless of increase in mixing ratio of PP fiber. Mixtures other than the plain showed satisfactory spalling prevention when 0.05 % or more of PP fiber was mixed. After the fire resistance experiment, the plain showed 5.5 % of mass loss rate when fiber was not mixed and others could not be measured. According to increase in mixing ratio of fiber, river sand with fineness modulus of 2.2 showed most satisfactory result of 34 %${\sim}$42 %. Mass loss rate after fire resistance experiment was most satisfactory at about 10 % in the plain crushed sand without mixing of fiber, and all other mixes with 0.05 % PP fiber or more showed 5${\sim}$10 % loss rate.
The values of fracture energy and mechanical flexural strength of Fiber Reinforced Cement (FRC) with polypropylene (PP) fiber modified by Ion Assisted Reaction (JAR), by which functional groups were grafted on the surface of PP fiber, was improved about 2 times as those of fracture energy and flexural strength of cement reinforced by untreated PP fiber. PP fiber was irradiated in O$_2$ environment by Ar$\^$+/ ion. The contact angle of PP treated by IAR decreased largely when compared with untreated PP. From this result, we expected that surface energy and interfacial adhesion force of treated PP fiber increased. The strain hardening occurred in the strain-stress curve of FRC including PP treated by IAR when compared with that of FRC with untreated PP. These enhanced mechanical properties might be due to strong interaction between hydrophilic group on modified PP fiber and hydroxyl group in cement matrix. This hydrophilic group on surface modified PP fiber was confirmed by XPS analysis. We clearly observed hydration products that were fixed at modified PP fiber due to the strong adhesion force of interface in cement reinforced modified PP by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) study.
The blends of polypropylene (PP) with glass filled thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP-g) have been prepared by melt mixing techniques at different blend ratios. The thermal, dynamic mechanical, crystalline and morphological characteristics of these blends were investigated. Higher percent crystallinity was observed for 10% level of LCP-g in the blend in comparison to that of other blend ratios. The thermal stability increased with LCP-g concentration in the blend with PP. The variation of storage modulus, stiffness and loss modulus as a function of blend ratios suggested the phase inversion at the 50% level of LCP-g in the blend. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs showed the creation of voids and destruction of the fiber structures during the dynamic mechanical measurements. Processing behavior of the blends depended on the fiber forming characteristics of LCP-g, which again varied with the molding temperatures.
