The recent power add-on drive wheelchairs (PADWs) provide greater physical activity, are easier to transport, and may be an excellent alternative for the typical manual or electric wheelchairs. The development of in-wheel motor for a PADW is the principal issues. In this paper, design, implementation, and testing of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for a PADW are presented. To design output power and torque of the motor, the equation of motion has been investigated. The design parameters were calculated and the dimension and shape of the motor which was limited by the In-wheel mechanism of the PADW were done by applying FEM and optimal design technique. The prototype of the motor mentioned above was fabricated with precise machining and assembling. Then the motor tested on dynamometer and the measured results of the motor were verified by comparing the design results. The fabricated motor was 80 mm in length with a diameter of 110 mm and small enough to be attached the driving unit of the PADW.

This paper deals with the input-output modeling of a vector controlled PMSM drive system and design of a simple multiple model adaptive control (MMAC) scheme with desired transient responses. We present a discrete-time modeling technique using closed-loop identification that can experimentally identify the equivalent models in the d-q coordinates. A bank of linear models for the equivalent plant of the current loop is first obtained by identifying them at several operating points of the current to account for nonlinearity. Based on these models, we suggest a simple q-axis MMAC combined with a fixed d-axis controller. After the current controller is designed, another equivalent model including the current controller in the speed control loop shall be similarly obtained, and then a fixed speed controller is synthesized. The proposed approach is demonstrated by experiments. The experimental set up consists of a surface mounted PMSM (5 KW, 220V, 8 poles) equipped with a flywheel load of 220kg and a digital controller using DSP (TMS320F28335).
This paper present a current predicting control method for PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor) to improve the tracking performance of stator current, which regards the current vector as the control target. Solving the model state equation in the static frame (α-β frame), the dynamic change of current vector will be gained as three independent terms. These change terms, which contain the prediction of current vector, are discretized and simplified by Taylor series expansion and used to get the voltage vector as the predictive control quantity. SVPWM will transform the control voltage to the switching signal of inverter, which is newly deduced for the current vector. Simulation and experiment results are given to testy and verify the performance of this method.
This study estimated experimentally the loss distribution caused by magnetic friction in magnetic parts of a superconductor flywheel energy storage system (SFES) to obtain information for the design of high efficiency SFES. Through the spin down experiment using the manufactured vertical shaft type SFES with a journal type superconductor magnetic bearing (SMB), the coefficients of friction by the SMB, the stator core of permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (PMSM/G), and the leakage flux of the metal parts were calculated. The coefficients of friction by the stator core of PMSM/G in case of using Si-steel and an amorphous core were calculated. The energy loss by magnetic friction in the stator core of PMSM/G was much larger than that in the other parts. The level of friction loss could be reduced dramatically using an amorphous core. Energy loss by the leakage magnetic field was small. On the other hand, the energy loss could be increased under other conditions according to the type of metal nearby the leakage magnetic fields. In manufactured SFES, the rotational loss by the amorphous core was approximately 2 times the loss of the superconductor and leakage. Moreover, the rotational loss by the Si-steel core is approximately 3~3.5 times the loss of superconductor and leakage.

This paper proposes a novel sensorless control scheme for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) by using a parallel reduced-order Extended Kalman Filter. The proposed scheme can obtain rotor position and speed by back-EMF that is estimated by reduced-order EKF and save computation time greatly due to using a parallel structure that works by turns every sampling time. Therefore, proposed scheme has merits of conventional EKF, and problems of parameter sensitivity are partially overcome. And proposed scheme can safely estimate rotor speed and position by using new algorithms according to driving regions. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed estimation technique, and to verify the merit of the proposed scheme, a comparison of a new reduced-order EKF algorithm with a conventional EKF algorithm has been also made in terms of computation time.

The a PWM VSI, the voltage distortion exists between the reference and output voltage. This distortion is caused by the intended blanking time and the inherent characteristics of the switching devices which are function of the operating condition. In this paper, the dead-time effects are analysed and a new on-line estimation method for a PMSM is proposed to compensate time varying dead-time effects

In this paper, a sensorless V/f control based on maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) operation for PMSMs is proposed. Given that the MTPA operation is not considered in the conventional sensorless V/f control, efficient PMSM drives cannot be achieved. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved technique based on the d-axis current control to enable the MTPA operation in the V/f control for PMSMs. A stabilization technique is also proposed to improve the dynamic characteristics and stability against load variation. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is verified by conducting experiments with a 250 W SPMSM for driving a blower.

This paper presents a robust current controller for a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM) by using a PI observer. The decoupling PI(proportional-integral) controller combined with an additional feed-forward compensation has been used for the current controller. The classical feed-forward compensation using velocity information and system parameters is not expected to achieve a robust performance against parameter uncertainties. This paper has adopted a PI observer for the feed-forward compensation to cope with parameter uncertainties without using velocity information. A simple PI observer has been designed to compensate the disturbances that represent velocity coupled terms and parameter uncertainties. Experimental results as well as computer simulations with 630W SPMSM confirm that the proposed approach can deal with the effects of the disturbance and improve the control performance.
This paper presents an advanced method for an initial pole position estimation of a PMLSM (Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor) that has an incremental encoder for servo applications but does not have Hall sensors as a magnetic pole sensor. The proposed algorithm finds either of two zero force positions and then the correct d-axis by appropriately using the secant method as a numerical method. It only requires the tuned current controller and the relative position information and so it can be simply applicable to a rotary PMSM. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed method with respect to accurate pole position estimation under the minimal moving distance during estimation process.
