  • The hot embossing process has been mentioned as one of major nanoreplication techniques. This is due to its simple process, low cost, high replication fidelity and relatively high throughput. As the initial step of quantitating the embossing process , simple parametric study about embossing time have been carried out using high-resolution masters which patterned by the DRIE process and laser machining. Under the various embossing time, the viscous flow of thin PMMA films into microcavities during compression force has been investigated. Also, a study about simulating the viscous flow during embossing process has planned and continuum scale FDM analysis was applied on this simulation. With currently available test data and condition, simple FDM analysis using FLOW3D was made attempt to match simulation and experiment.

  • Molecular conformations of stereoregular poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) monolayers have been investigated by scanning probe microscopes. Isotactic and syndiotactic PMMAs were found to have right and left hand helical structures, respectively. On the contrary atactic PMMA showed rather random arrangement of the chains. It has been demonstrated that the PMMA Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films can be utilized to form nanoscale patterns down to 50 nm and to forma geodesic lens. It has also been manifested that the quantum efficiency of a polymer electroluminescent device can be significantly enhanced by inserting the PMMA LB films between the emitting layer and the cathode. All the applications utilize the unique characteristics of the LB films to form thin and uniform films in the molecular level.

  • Thermal fusion bonding is a method to enclose open microchannels fabricated on polymer chips for use in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is utilized in various biomedical-microelectromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) applications, such as medical diagnostic kits, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These applications utilize PMMAs biochemical compatibility, optical transparency, and mold characteristics. In this paper, we elucidate both the conformational entanglement of PMMA molecules at the contact interfacial regime, and the qualitative nature of the thermal fusion bonding phenomena through systematic molecular dynamics simulations.

  • Acryl and vinyl sulfone functionalized blue and orange azo dyes were prepared by the coupling reaction of 6-bromo-2-cyano-4-nitroaniline and 2,5-dimethoxy-4-(vinylsulfonyl)benzenamine with 3-acrylamido-(N,N-diethylamino)benzene and 3-methyl-(N,N-diethylamino)benzene, respectively, for the coloring of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Allyl functionalized dye was also prepared by reacting vinyl sulfone-containing dye with allylamine. Three types of dyeing method were used: the copolymerization of reactive dye with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and dyeing by polymerization of MMA in the presence of polymeric dye and dye 2 without reactive function. The color fastness for the three PMMAs were evaluated by comparing the solubility of dye under various conditions.

  • Polymethyl-methacrylate(PMMA; Artecoll$^{(R)}$) microspheres suspended 1 : 3 in a 3.5% collagen solution has been used as an injectable implant for long lasting correction of wrinkles and minor skin defects. The patients with mandibular prognathism have increased necessity for nasal augmentation. Usually these patients usually get an additional rhinoplasty after orthognathic surgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the result of PMMA injection for nasal ridge augmentation simultaneously with the orthognathic surgery. PMMAs were injected to the nasal dorsum of 13 patients with mandibular prognathism to augment the nasal ridge at the end of the orthognathic surgery. The cephalometric X-ray and clinical facial photograph were taken at 2, 4 and 6 months after operation. Using S-N line, we calculated the change of soft tisuue on the nasal ridge and also investigated the degree of patients satisfaction at 6 months after operation. Most of the patients were satisfied with their nasal ridge height status from moderate to good degree. The average amount of nasal ridge augmentation was $1.4{\pm}0.5$ mm immediately after operation, $1.2{\pm}0.4$ mm at 2 months after operation. The postoperative nasal ridge height seemed to be remained stable after 2 months. Intraoperative PMMA injection is considered to be simple and effective technique which can be used for the minor augmentation of nasal ridge in the orthognathic patients.
