  • Conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement has been widely used as an useful biopolymeric material to fix bone using artificial prostheses. However, many patients had to be reoperated, due to the poor mechanical and thermal properties of conventional PMMA bone cement, which are derived from the presence of unreacted MMA liquid, the shrinkage and bubble formation that occur during the curing process of the bone cement, and the high curing temperature ($above 100^{\circ}C$) which has to be used. In the present study, a composite PMMA bone cement was prepared by impregnating conventional PMMA bone cement with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powder, in order to improve its mechanical and thermal properties. The UHMWPE powder has poor adhesion with other biopolymeric materials due to the inertness of the powder surface. Therefore, the surface of the UHMWPE powder was modified with two kinds of silane coupling agent containing amino groups (3-amino propyltriethoxysilane ($TSL 8331^{R}$) and N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(amino propyltrimethoxysilane) ($TSL 8340^{R}$)), in order to improve its bonding strength with the conventional PMMA bone cement. The tensile strengths of the composite PMMA bone cements containing $3 wt\%$ of the UHMWPE powder surface-modified with various ratios of $TSL 8331^{R}$ and $TSL 8340^{R}$ were similar or a little higher than that of the conventional PMMA bone cement. However, no significant difference in the tensile strengths between the conventional PMMA bone cement and the composite PMMA bone cements could be found. However, the curing temperatures of the composite PMMA bone cements were significantly decreased.

  • Porous W with controlled pore structure was fabricated by thermal decomposition and hydrogen reduction process of PMMA beads and $WO_3$ powder compacts. The PMMA sizes of 8 and $50{\mu}m$ were used as pore forming agent for fabricating the porous W. The $WO_3$ powder compacts with 20 and 70 vol% PMMA were prepared by uniaxial pressing and sintered for 2 h at $1200^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen atmosphere. TGA analysis revealed that the PMMA was decomposed at about $400^{\circ}C$ and $WO_3$ was reduced to metallic W at $800^{\circ}C$. Large pores in the sintered specimens were formed by thermal decomposition of spherical PMMA, and their size was increased with increase in PMMA size and the amount of PMMA addition. Also the pore shape was changed from spherical to irregular form with increasing PMMA contents due to the agglomeration of PMMA in the powder mixing process.

  • Graft polymers of alginic acid-PMMA, different in composition and Mv of branched PMMA, were prepared by emulsion graft polymerization at various MMA concentrations. In aqueous dispersion solution, the adsorption of graft polymer on the montmorillonite was carried out to modify the surface property of powder, and the adsorption of PMMA in organic solvents (acetone, benzene) on the modified surface of powder were observed. The results obtained were as follows. 1. In emulsion graft polymerization of MMA on the sodium alginate in aqueous solution, SA conversion, MMA conversion and % grafting were increased with increasing MMA concentration where as graft efficiency was decreased. 2. The adsorption amount of graft polymer was increased with the elevation of temperature and the increased of dispersion concentration and with the increase of branched PMMA composition of graft polymer. 3. In organic solvent, the adsorption of PMMA on the surface modified particle was proceeded by the orientation along the stretched branched PMMA of adsorbed graft polymer which is in radial direction to the particle surface. 4. The adsorbed amount of PMMA was increased as the temperature and concentration of PMMA solution, the branching of adsorbed graft polymer and the solvency of solvent were increased.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles, denture base resin, were synthesized by suspension polymerization through control of polymerization conditions (stabilizer concentration, co-monomer concentration, and the agitation speed) and evaluated changes in molecular weight and particle size. We also investigated their mechanical properties of compression-molded samples which were from synthesized polymer powder mixed with methyl methacrylate (MMA) solution. under the condition of volumetric ratio as 2:1(PMMA powder and MMA solution). The results shows that the mechanical properties were mainly affected by particle size over 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size) and by molecular weight under 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size). From these results, we concluded that the most appropriate particle size of PMMA powder for heat-cured denture base resins is around 100 ${\mu}$m. and its molecular weight is around 300000 (M$\sub$n/).

  • Poly-methylmetacrylate (PMMA) is mainly applied in the plastic manufacturing industry, but PMMA is weak and gradually got discolor. The strength of PMMA can be improved through organic-inorganic hybrid nano composites with inorganic nano particles such as, $SiO_2$ or ZrO. However, inorganic nano particles are mostly agglomerated spontaneously. In this study, the zeta potential is controlled using different types of organic solvent with different concentrations, dispersibillity of $SiO_2$ nano particles on the PMMA particle are analyzed. When 3 M acetic acid is used, absolute value of the zeta potential is higher, $SiO_2$ nano particle is well attached, and dispersed on the PMMA particle surface. Results indicate that the absolute value of the zeta potential affects the stability of $SiO_2$ dispersion.

  • Using microwave synthesized HAp nano powder and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a pore-forming agent, the porous biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics were fabricated depending on the sintering temperature. The synthesized HAp powders was about 70-90 nm in diameter. In the porous sintered bodies, the pores having $150-180\;{\mu}m$ were homogeneously dispersed in the BCP matrix. Some amounts of pores interconnected due the necking of PMMA powders which will increase the osteoconductivity and ingrowth of bone-tissues while using as a bone substrate. As the sintering temperature increased, the relative density increased and showed the maximum value of 79.6%. From the SBF experiment, the maximum resorption of $Ca^{2+}$ ion was observed in the sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • This study is intended to analyze the impact of PMMA on color changes comparatively by making 2 types of cheek color items with red-color pigments: one containing PMMA, which is one of the recently developed circular polymers and used when producing color make-up items that have aero powder as the chief ingredient, and the other without it. To accomplish the purpose, we have reviewed literature on raw materials that have aero powder as the chief ingredient. Also, after making compounds of PMMA and pigments lot aero powder, such as Talc, Mica, OMC Talc As, Mica As, we examined them compared to those without PMMA using spectrophotometer, a questionnaire survey, and Digital camera. Besides, the particles were analyzed using SEM. As a result of the analysis, cosmetics containing PMMA represent more vivid and rich colors, putting on one's face softly. Since the entire specific surface area of PMMA is large enough to absorb oil evenly, it yields vivid and rich colors. But, Mica, one of natural pigments, shows a result as opposed to that of Mica As, one of silicon-compounded pigments, suggesting that pearl effect may possibly causes defused reflection. Based on these findings, it is expected that cosmetics will have more vivid colors, or improved color presentation, as well as the softer sense of touch when a circular polymer of PMMa is added to the manufacturing process of color make-up items.

  • In order to prepare porous scaffolds capable of pore control, PMMA powder serving as a pore-forming agent was added to HA powder to synthesize a slurry containing TBA as a solvent. And then, porous HA scaffolds where pillarshaped pore channels interconnected with each other were fabricated by freeze-casting and sintering. The crystal structure of the HA scaffolds according to the addition amount of PMMA powder was measured by XRD and the surface and inner cross section of the scaffolds were analyzed through SEM. It was found that removal of PMMA during sintering affects the internal structure of the scaffolds and the crystallinity of the HA powder. Furthermore, through evaluating the physical and mechanical properties of the scaffolds, it was confirmed that the porosity, pore size and compressive strength can be controlled by controlling the addition amount of the pore-forming agent. It was also found that the HA scaffolds produced in this study were similar in structure and properties to the natural cancellous bone. This suggests that porous HA scaffolds with PMMA can be used as an alternative to autogenous bone for tissue engineering as an artificial bone scaffold.

  • PMMA(poly-methyl methacrylate) microlens array is fabricated using transparent acrylic resin. PMMA is commonly used material for plastic lens due to its excellent visibility larger than 90% and other optical characteristics so much close to those of glass. Orthodontic resin (DENTSPLY International Inc.), commonly used in dentistry, is an transparent acrylic resin kit including MMA liquid and polymerization powder. Their mixture results in PMMA through polymerization. Using the resin PMMA layer is formed on the substrate through spin-coating. Designed pattern of lens structure is transferred to PMMA layer by RIE (Reactive Ion Etching) with oxygen plasma. Final lens shape is formed by thermal treatment that causes PMMA to reflow, The thickness of PMMA spun on the substrate is $17{\mu}m$ that is also final sag of microlens, Designed diameters of the microlenses are $200{\mu}m$, $300{\mu}m$,and $500{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • In solid oxide fuel cell system, yttria-stabilized zirconia is generally adopted as the electrolyte, which has high strength and superior oxygen ion conductivity, and the air electrode and the fuel electrode are attached to this. Recently, new structure of 'layered planar SOFC module' was suggested to solve the reliability problem due to the high temperature stability of a sealing agent and a binding material. In this study to materialize the air electrode in a layered planar SOFC module, the LSM ink was coated to form homogeneous electrode in the channel after the ink preparation. As the porosity control agent, PMMA or active carbon powder was adopted with use of a commercial dispersant in ethanol. The optimal amounts of both the porosity control agents and the dispersant were determined. Four (4) vol% of the dispersant for the LSM-PMMA case and 15 vol% for LSM-carbon powder showed the lowest viscosities respectively to indicate the best dispersed states of the slurries. With PMMA and carbon powder, sintered LSM ink shows the relatively homogeneous distributions of pores and with increases of the agents, the porosities increased in both cases. From this, it can be thought that the amount of the PMMA or carbon powder could be used to control the porosity of the LSM ink.
