  • Nanoaggregates of triple hydrophilic block copolymers comprised of poly(ethylene oxide), poly(sodium 2-acrylamido)-2-methylpropanesulfonate), and poly(methacrylic acid) (PEO-PAMPS-PMAA) and the cationic surfactant, dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) have been fabricated. The formation of $^{\circ}^{\circ}$the nanoaggregates is based on electrostatic interaction of sulfonate and carboxylate groups of PAMPS and PMAA blocks with the cationic surfactant, which results in insolubilization of these blocks. The formation of micelle is observed by dynamic light scattering measurements. Binding of DTAC to the anionic blocks of PEO-PAMPS-PMAA is confirmed by electrophoresis measurements.

  • Amphiphilic graft copolymer from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was synthesized using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for composite nanofiltration membranes. Direct initiation of the secondary fluorinated site of PVDF facilitates grafting of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA). Amphiphilic PVDF-g-PMAA graft copolymer with a 51:49 wt ratio was obtained by hydrolyzing poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) (PtBMA) to poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA). Wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed the decrease of crystallinity of PVDF upon graft copolymerization. Composite nanofiltration membranes were prepared from PVDF-g-PMAA as a top layer coated onto PVDF ultrafiltration (UF) support membrane. The morphology and hydrophilicity of membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurement. The rejections of composite membranes were 80.2% for $Na_2SO_4$ and 28.4% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 9.5 and $14.5\;L/m^2\;h$ at 1.0 MPa pressure.

  • In wet powder processing of alumina, a number of organic molecules such as dispersant and binder are used to produce the flow behavior and properties requisite for shape forming. In this study, interparticle forces of alumina particles suspended in aqueous media were controlled by suspension pH, poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA, used as dispersant) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA, used as binder). The combined adsorption isotherms of the dispersant and binder additives on alumina were determined by total organic carbon analyzer, while the adsorption of dispersant was differentiated from binder in the mixed additive system by ultraviolet spectroscopy. The electrokinetic behavior of alumina suspensions were then correlated with the adsorption characteristics of dispersant and binder onto alumina particles. It was found that the isoelectric ($pH_{iep}$) of alumina shifted from pH 8.9${\pm}$0.1 to acidic pH as PMAA concentration increased, while PVA adsorption did not affect the $pH_{iep}$ but caused a decrease in the near surface potential.

  • Laser-induced photoacoustic spectroscopy (LIPAS), which utilizes the photothermal effect that results from nonradiative relaxation of excited state molecules, was used in the speciation analysis of the complexes of neodymium(III) and water soluble synthetic polyelectrolyte, poly methacrylic acid (PMAA), in 0.1 M $NaClO_4$ at pH of 6.0. The minimum detection limit of Nd(III) by LIPAS was $5.O{\times}10^{-6}$ M. Experiment was carried out at low concentration ratio of Nd(III) to PMAA to assure that 1 : 1 complexes predominate. The bound and free Nd(III) species were characterized by measuring nonradiative relaxation energy of the excited states $(^2GM{7/2}\;and\;^4G_{5/2})$ to the metastable state $(^4G_{3/2})$. Two species were quantified by deconvolution of the mixed spectrum using their respective reference spectra. The conditional stability constant measured by LIPAS was 5.52 L$mol^{-1}$.

  • Plastic optical fibers(POFs) composed of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), or polycarbonate(PC) as a core materials, and of fluorinated polymer or PMMA as a cladding were fabricated and their properties were investigated in this study. The attenuation loss of PMAA core POF was about 1,700 dB/Km at 660 nm, the loss of PS core POF was 1,800 dB/Km at 560 nm, and the loss of PC core POF was 2,200 dB/Km at 780 nm. These attenuation losses of POFs prepared ill this study were higher than those of commerically available POFs. Compared to PMMA and PS core POFs, PC core POF has excellent characteristics, including high thermal stability, high flexibility, and high impact strength.

  • The optical biosensor using the electrically controlled release of reactive reagent is developed for the detection of peroxide. Rapid degradation of polymer complex of PEOx and PMAA occurs as the applied current increases and thus released amount of HPA increases. The degradation velocity of polymer and the amount of HPA released are linearly proportional to the applied current. Peroxide is reacted with the released reagent by peroxidase and then the product, a fluorescent dimer DBDA, is formed. The monochromic light from light source (150W Xe arc ramp) excites the DBDA and the excited light is transmitted through an optical fiber to be detected by a photodiode array. The change of fluorescence intensity is related to the change of peroxide concentration. The peroxidase is entrapped in Ca-alginate get on the inner surface. The biosensor has the linear signal range of 0.025mM-10.mM peroxide. By applying the step function of peroxide, reproducibility of biosensor has been investigated. The mathematical model is constructed by the combination of enzyme kinetics with reactor flow model. Good agreement is obtained between the experimental result and model prediction in the sensor signal.

  • Recently, new methods to synthesize and process polymers without toxic organic solvents are needed in order to solve environmental problems. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent for the polymer synthesis is attractive since it is non-toxic, non-flammable, naturally abundant, and the product may be easily separated from the solvent. In this study, we developed the method using super critical $CO_2$ to prepare P(MAA-co-EGMA) hydrogel nanoparticles as an intelligent drug delivery carrier. The effects of concentrations of PtBuMA-PEO as a dispersion stabilizer and AIBN as an initiator on the particle synthesis were investigated. When PtBuMA-PEO concentration increased, the particle size decreased. However, there was no significant difference in the particle size according to the AIBN concentration. There was a drastic change of the equilibrium weight swelling ratio of P(MAA-co-EGMA) hydrogel nanoparticles at a pH of around 5, which is the $pK_a$ of PMAA. At a pH below 5, the hydrogels were in a relatively collapsed state but at a pH higher than 5, the hydrogels swelled to a high degree. In release experiments using Rh-B as a model solute, the P(MAA-co-EGMA) hydrogel nanoparticles showed a pH-sensitive release behavior. At low pH(pH 4.0) a small amount of Rh-B was released while at high pH(pH 6.0) a relatively large amount of Rh-B was released from the hydrogels.

  • A novel, polysaccharide-based, superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized through crosslinking graft copolymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) onto kappa-carrageenan ($_{k}C$), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. A proposed mechanism for $_{k}C$g-polymethacrylic acid ($_{k}C$-g-PMAA) formation was suggested and the hydrogel structure was confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables, including MBA, MAA, and APS concentration, was systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with the maximum possible swelling capacity. The swelling kinetics in distilled water and various salt solutions were preliminarily investigated. Absorbency in aqueous salt solutions of lithium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and aluminum chloride indicated that the swelling capacity decreased with increased ionic strength of the swelling medium. This behavior can be attributed to the charge screening effect for monovalent cations, as well as ionic crosslinking for multivalent cations. The swelling of super absorbing hydrogels was measured in solutions with pH ranging from 1 to 13. In addition, the pH reversibility and on-off switching behavior, at pH levels of 3.0 and 8.0, give the synthesized hydrogels great potential as an excellent candidate for the controlled delivery of bioactive agents.
