  • Soy isoflavones could be recovered with adsorption resin column chromatography from soybean cooking water produced during soymilk or tofu manufacturing process. The main isoflavones in the soybean cooking water were genistin and daidzin, and their concentration was $0.083{\pm}0.019$ and $0.11{\pm}0.017\;mM$, respectively. Their aglycones were not detected. pH of soybean cooking water was critical in this chromatographic process and the recovery of isoflavones, both genistin and daidzin, was maximum at pH 4.0. Adsorption of genistin on the resin was stronger than that of daidzin. Elution rate and height/diameter ratio also affected the recovery yield. Under the optimal conditions, about 85% of genistin and 70% of daidzin could be isolated from soybean cooking water. Soy saponins were also recovered with isoflavones.

  • Background and objective: Particulate matter (PM) has a serious impact on health. Recently, studies are conducted to reduce PM in an environmentally friendly way using plants. This study investigated the physiological responses of plants and their ability to remove PM by continuously spraying different PM sources (loam, fly ash, carbon black) to four native plant species, such as Iris sanguinea, Pteris multifida, Vitis coignetiae, and Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki. Methods: The four plant species were randomly placed in four chambers, and 0.1 g of different PM was injected into each chamber twice a week. We measured chlorophyll, carotenoid, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), total leaf area, amount of leaf wax, PM10 (sPM10) and PM2.5 (sPM2.5) on the leaf surface, and PM10 (wPM10) and PM2.5 (wPM2.5) on the wax layer. Results: For I. sanguinea and V. coignetiae, the sources of PM did not affect the growth response. P. multifida showed high chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid content in carbon black as well as high Fv/Fm and total leaf area, thereby proving that carbon black helped plant growth. By PM sources, sPM10 showed a significant difference in three plant species, sPM2.5 in two plant species, and wPM10 in one plant species, indicating that sPM10 was most affected by PM sources. Conclusion: Carbon black increased the leaf area by affecting the growth of P. multifida. This plant can be effectively used for PM reduction by increasing the adsorption area. I. sanguinea and V. coignetiae can be used as economical landscaping plants since they can grow regardless of PM sources.

  • In the recent 2017 annual average fine dust concentration (PM2.5) statistics released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Korea has a high concentration of 25.14㎍/m3, which is about twice the average of 12.5㎍/m3 in OECD countries. Fine dust (PM2.5) is the main source of secondary pollutant production by the reaction of primary pollutants emitted from automobiles and thermal power plants, mainly composed of sulfates, nitrates, and organic carbon. The permeable block is an eco-friendly product that prevents rainwater from collecting on the surface of the road because it does not penetrate the groundwater properly, and is widely constructed on sidewalks or parking lots to recharge groundwater in case of rain. In addition, the pavement of the permeable block is a fundamental solution to reduce pollution by preventing rainwater from flowing into the stream, and it also has the advantage of easy replacement as well as low replacement costs. Therefore, this study was a basic experiment to produce permeable blocks mixed with TiO2 and diatomite to improve indoor air quality, and intended to analyze the flexural strength and compressive strength of permeable blocks mixed with TiO2.

  • Modern passenger cars with diesel engines are equipped with DOC(diesel oxidation catalyst) for the purpose of reducing HC and CO in the exhaust stream. Cold start exhaust emissions pose troubles here as on gasoline engine vehicles. As a result, some of the diesel passenger cars roll off todays the assembly lines with WCC(warm-up catalytic converter). Oxidation characteristics of the particulates in WCC is analyzed in this study by EEPS(engine exhaust particulate size spectrometer). The maximum number of PM is found to come out of WCC in sizes near 10nm when an HSDI diesel engine is operated under the conditions of high speed and medium to heavy load. When the temperature of the WCC exceeds $300^{\circ}C$, the number of PM smaller than 30 nm in diameter sharply increases upon passing through the WCC. Total mass of emitted PM gets reduced downstream of the WCC under low speed and light load conditions due to adsorption of PM onto the catalyst. Under conditions of high speed and medium to heavy load, the relatively large PM shrink or break into fine particles during oxidation process within the WCC, which results in more mass fraction of fine particles downstream of the WCC.

  • Toluene, n-hexane, and methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) were exposed to the activated carbon fiber(ACF) and 3M(Model 3500) diffusive samplers under low and high humidity levels. In order to evaluate these two samplers, the sampling capacity, sampling rate, reverse diffusion, and storage stability were obtained. At low humidity level($8{\pm}3%RH$), the adsorption amount of all three organic vapors to the ACF diffusive sampler showed a positive linear relationship up to 8 hours. However, at high humidity level($90{\pm}5%RH$), n-hexane and MEK maintained a positive linear relationship up to 1.5 hrs, but decreased in their adsorption amounts afterwards. On the other hand, the adsorption amount of n-hexane, MEK, and toluene to 3M diffusive sampler showed almost a positive linear relationship up to 8 hours at both humidity levels. At low humidity level, there was almost no reverse diffusion for both 3M and ACF diffusive samplers. However, when the ACF diffusive sampler was used at high humidity level, there was about 52.63% of MEK sample loss and about 92.59% of n-hexane sample loss. The storage stabilities of the ACF and 3M diffusive samplers were both relative stable except for MEK. In the case of MEK, the difference between the analysis of the organic vapor right after the sampling and that of 3 weeks later at room temperature was 45% for the ACF diffusive sampler and 18% for the 3M diffusive sampler. Since the storage stability of the samples stored in a refrigerator was relatively stable, they need to be refrigerated until the analysis is done.

  • A study of the adsorption site of CO in the Ni(111)$(2\times2)$-O/CO coadsorbed phase over different sample preparation temperatures revealed that the atop site is favoured. The Ni-C spacing is given by $1.77\pm0.01\;{\AA}$. A study of the adsorption site of Co in the Ni(111)$(2\times2)$-O/CO coadsorbed phase over different sample preparation temperatures revealed that the atop site is favoured. The Ni-C spacing is given by $1.77\pm0.01\;{\AA}$. The data from the sample prepared at 265 K showed atop sites, which is well consistent with vibrational spectroscopy, whilst the data from the low temperature preparation appears the mixture of atop and hop $(35\%)$. The occupation of hop hollow sites is probably due to an incorrect pre-coverage of atomic oxygen (different from 0.25ml). Similar observation of site mixture also found in recent high resolution XPS measurements using C 1s and O 1s chemical shifts.

  • In this study, composite PAN-based ACNFs embedded with MgO and $MnO_2$ were prepared by the electrospinning method. The resultant pristine ACNFs, ACNF/MgO and $ACNF/MnO_2$ were characterized in terms of their morphological changes, SSA, crystallinity and functional group with FESEM-EDX, the BET method, XRD and FTIR analysis, respectively. Results from this study showed that the SSA of the ACNF/MgO composite ($1893m^2g^{-1}$) is significantly higher than that of the pristine ACNFs and $ACNF/MnO_2$ which is 478 and $430m^2g^{-1}$, respectively. FTIR analysis showed peaks of 476 and $547cm^{-1}$, indicating the presence of MgO and $MnO_2$, respectively. The FESEM micrographs analysis showed a smooth but coarser structure in all the ACNFs. Meanwhile, the ACNF/MgO has the smallest fiber diameter ($314.38{\pm}62.42nm$) compared to other ACNFs. The presence of MgO and $MnO_2$ inside the ACNFs was also confirmed with EDX analysis as well as XRD. The adsorption capacities of each ACNF toward $CH_4$ were tested with the volumetric adsorption method in which the ACNF/MgO exhibited the highest $CH_4$ adsorption up to $2.39mmol\;g^{-1}$. Meanwhile, all the ACNF samples followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model with a $R^2$ up to 0.9996.

  • The effect of activated carbon particle diameter (i.e. US sieve No. $8{\times}10$ ($d_p{\approx}2.19mm$), $18{\times}20$ ($d_p{\approx}0.92mm$), $50{\times}60$ ($d_p{\approx}0.27mm$) and $170{\times}200$ ($d_p{\approx}0.081mm$) on caffeine adsorption is investigated. BET surface area was increased with decreasing particle diameter ($d_p$), and caffeine adsorption rates increased with decreasing $d_p$. Moreover, pseudo-second order model is predicted the experimental data more accurately than pseudo-first order model, and the fastest rate constant ($k_2$) was $1.7g\;mg^{-1}min^{-1}$ when $d_p$ was 0.081 mm. Surface diffusion coefficient (Ds) was decreased with decreasing $d_p$ based on the minimum sum of square error (SSE). Practically, certain ranges of Ds are acceptable with high reliability ($R^2$) and it is determined that the effect of $d_p$ on Ds is unclear. The effect of pH on caffeine adsorption indicated the dependency of m/L ratio (mass liquid ratio) and $pH_{pzc}$. The $pH_{pzc}$ (i.e. $7.9{\pm}0.2$) was not affected by $d_p$. The higher caffeine adsorption at pH 4 and pH 7 than at pH 10 is due to $pH_{pzc}$, not $pk_a$ of caffeine.

  • The variation of the surface structure of the Al adsorbed W(110) planes according to the coverage and the substrate temperature has been investigated using LEED and ISS When the Al atoms were adsorbed on the W(110) surface at room temperature, a p($1{\times}1$) of the fcc (111) face were found at the coverage higher than 4 ML. When the substrate temperature was kept at 900 K during Al adsorption and the coverage was 1.0 ML, the surface revealed a p($1{\times}1$) of the bcc(110) face and when the coverage is 1.5 ML, the surface showed a p($1{\times}1$) of the bcc (110) face together with a p($1{\times}1$) double domain structure (fcc (111) face) rotated ${\pm}3^{\circ}$ from the [100] direction of the W(110) surface. When Al atoms were adsorbed on the W(110) surface at the substrate temperature of 1000 K and the coverage was higher than 1.0 ML, the surface revealed a p($1{\times}1$) of the bcc(110) face together with p($1{\times}1$) double domain structure(fcc(111) face) rotated ${\pm}3^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ from the [100] direction of the W(110) surface. When Al atoms were adsorbed on the W(110) surface at the substrate temperature of 1100 K and the coverage was 0.5 ML, Al atoms formed a p($2{\times}1$) double domain structure When the coverage was 1.0 ML, the double domain hexagonal structure (fcc(111) face) rotated ${\pm}5^{\circ}$ from the [100] direction of the W(110) surface and another distorted hexagonal structure was found. Low-energy electron diffraction results along with ion scattering spectroscopy results showed that the Al atoms followed the Volmer-Weber growth mode at high temperature.

  • Liposomes have been used as one of the efficient carriers for drug delivery. In this study, anionic liposomes of which surface was modified by using both electrostaic interaction between anionic liposomes and cationically charged BSA molecules at lower pH than isoelectric point (pI) of BSA and denaturation of the BSA-coated liposomes by thermal treatment. The thermally denatured BSA-coated liposomes (DBAL) had mean particle diameter of 125.2${\pm}$1.7 nm and zeta potential value of -22.4${\pm}$4.5 mV. Loading efficiency of model drug, doxorubicin (DOX), into liposomes was 83.0${\pm}$2.6%. Results of in vitro stability study of DBAL in blood plasma showed that the mean particle diameter of DBAL 400 did not increase in blood plasma and adsorption of plasma protein was much less than plain or anionic liposomes. Intracellular uptake of DBAL 400 evaluated by confocal microscopy observation was higher than that of PEG liposomes.
