  • Cell-phone becomes a necessary communication device in modern society. However, a paging signal by a sound transducer often acts as an unpleasant noise, thus necessitating a paging signal by a vibration motor. The conventional flat type vibration motor uses three-phase windings with three phase coils. In this article, a new design of a vibration motor using a V connection with two phase coils is presented, increasing mass productivity. For electromagnetic field analysis, due to the motor symmetry, two-dimensional modeling can be implemented for fast computation, and performance is predicted by the finite element method. The winding distribution angle turns out to be the most important design parameter for the elimination of dead points, and a new coil configuration is suggested which has no adverse effect on motor size and weight. Experimental tests of vibration confirm the validity of the proposed design.

  • This paper introduces a four-Pole Lorentz force type self-bearing motor in which a new winding configuration is proposed to enable the sing1e winding to function both as a synchronous PM motor and as a magnetic bearing. The Lorentz force type has some good points such as the linearity of control force, freedom from flux saturation, and high efficiency, unlike conventional self-bearing motors using a reluctance force. And also, compared with the previously proposed eight-pole type, this four-pole self-bearing motor is more profitable for high rotational speed. In this paper, mathematical expressions of torque and radial force in the proposed self-bearing motor are derived to show that they can be separately controlled regardless of rotational speed and time. For verification of the theory, a prototype is made, where a ring-shape outer rotor is actively controlled in two radial directions while the other motions are passively stable supposing the radial stability. Through some experiments. it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide high capability and feasibility for a small high-speed self-bearing motor.

  • A linear motor damper based on the linear motor principle is developed to suppress structural vibration. This paper deals with the design, analysis, and manufacture of the linear motor damper. It is designed to be able to move the auxiliary mass of 1500kg, up to $\pm250mm$ stroke. The control algorithm was designed based on LQG control logic with acceleration feedback. Through performance tests, it was confirmed that the developed hybrid mass damper has reliable feasibility as a control device for structural control. In addition, the linear motor damper is more economical than both hydraulic and electric motor driving mass damper with respect to simple structure and low maintenance cost. A series of performance tests of the linear motor damper system were carried out on the full-scale steel frame structure in UNISON Corporation. Through the performance tests, it was confirmed that acceleration levels are reduced down 10dB for first mode of structure

  • This paper proposes a novel asymmetrical interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor structure, which utilizes half-type permanent magnet (PM) configuration and has asymmetrical side gaps (slot next to the PMs) for reducing torque ripples. This structure uses 24% less volume of PMs than conventional IPM BLDC motor with a full set of magnets. The characteristics of the proposed motor are compared with three other half-type IPM BLDC motors through finite elements method (FEM) analysis, and the usefulness of the proposed motor was verified through experimental evaluation on prototypes of the conventional motor and proposed motor under various torque load conditions. This research obtained a high-performance IPM BLDC motor while decreasing manufacturing cost at the same time.

  • Purpose: For prevention and suitable administration, the effect of age on the severity of injuries in traffic accidents should be considered when evaluating a patient, but there have not been enough epidemiological studies that evaluate the age factor in traffic accidents. For that reason, we investigated old-aged patients who were involved in traffic accidents (65 years old or more) and who were admitted to the emergency department of a college hospital in an urban city of Korea. Methods: We collected data from traffic-accident patients who came to the emergency room of a university hospital in Seoul from Jan.1, 2004 to Dec.31, 2005. We compared their abilities to ambulate and the RTSs (Revised trauma scores) by using a LSD (least significant difference), linear regression. Results: A total of 1460 patients were included. The mean RTS of all traffic-accident patients was $7.77{\pm}0.280$. The scores for drivers and passengers, motor-cycle drivers and passengers, bicycle drivers and passengers, and pedestrians were $7.79{\pm}0.21$, $7.78{\pm}0.22$, $7.54{\pm}0.25$, $7.77{\pm}0.20$, and $7.80{\pm}0.21$ respectively (p=0.000). There was no statistically significant difference between the RTS of patients over 65 years and that of other patients. In a regression analysis, the number of patients over 45 ages who were able to ambulate was lower than that of younger people, independently of other influencing factors (B=-0.330, R-square = 0.243, p=0.000). Conclusion: We expected that RTS of old age group more than 65 years old will significantly lower than that of others, but there was no statistically significant difference.

  • Background: Previous studies of radial nerve conduction study (NCS) did not present how to measure the length of the radial nerve across the elbow, and did not even mention how to manage the spiral course of the nerve. This study aimed to applicate the most reliable method to measure the length of the radial nerve during NCS. Methods: Three points (A, B, and C) were determined along the relatively straight course of the radial nerve. The distance was measured using three different methods: L1) straight distance corresponding to the A-C distance, L2) sum of the distances corresponding to the A-B-C distance, L3) based on the L2, but the elbow is flexed at a $45^{\circ}$ angle. We compared the three methods of distance measurement and the calculated nerve conduction velocities (V1, V2, and V3) in normal healthy subjects. Results: 19 normal participants were enrolled. The mean value for method L1, L2 and L3 were $22.5{\pm}1.8cm$, $24.0{\pm}2.1cm$, and $23.2{\pm}2.1cm$ (p < 0.001). Calculated conduction velocities using those distance measurement methods as follows (p < 0.001): V1 ($60.9{\pm}2.7m/s$), V2 ($64.6{\pm}3.3m/s$), and V3 ($63.4{\pm}3.9m/s$). V2 was significantly greater than V1 and V3 (p < 0.001, p = 0.010, respectively). Conclusions: The distance measurement using a stopover point near the lateral epicondyle between two stimulus points in position of a fully extended elbow with forearm pronation is the most appropriate posture for radial motor NCS.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to find out of an effect of forward, backward walking using partial weight bearing on walking of the patient with incomplete spinal cord injury. Methods : The average age, and the term of being sick of 6 patients who were selected as the subjects with incomplete spinal cord injury and who received medical attention in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, was 50.3 years old, and 10.7 months, and those were also the patients that were classified as ASIA-C or D by ASIA. The forward, backward walking using a partial weight bearing system as the research method, took total 6 weeks, 3 days per week, 3 times per day, total 45 minutes for each time(15 minutes for a time, 5 minutes for a breathing time), and the 15 minutes was used for forward walking 7.30 minutes, backward walking for 7.30 minutes, to find out before and after the test of WISCI, PCI, Walking Speed, Motor Score of Lower Limbs for the selected patients with incomplete spinal cord injury. Results : The result was showed WISCI from 17 points to 17 points that is, no change occurred at all, and PCI from $161.01{\pm}103.06$ to $74.97{\pm}58.19$, some amount of reduction that is not statistically significant(p<.05). Regarding walking speed, it increased from $24{\pm}.07m/sec$ to. $61{\pm}.35m/sec$, that is statistically significant(p<.05), and motor score of lower limbs showed statistically significant increase like from $33.17{\pm}7.08$ to $37{\pm}5.14$(P<.05). Conclusion : The 4 evaluation categories seem to have shown differences due to an insufficient number of subjects, and short test term, and it seems the more diverse task-oriented walking exercises should be studied in the coming days.

  • The Objects of this paper are developing and also improving a high-speed driving system of bushless DC motor(BLDCM) with economical and practical performance. Because BLDC motors are manufactured that each motor can create proper torque for their individual purpose, it is difficult to increase over the rated speed when a motor speed (with it's rated road) is reaching to a maximum speed so the motor torque cannot be increased. This paper verifies the effects of Leading Angle Algorithm, that is proposed on this paper, with examining existing methods to maximize the torque of a motor in high-speed driving area. The arithmetic processor for this experiment is TMS320C240 DSP controller that is designed for a special purpose of motor control in Texis Instrument Inc., and the used Inverter is PM10CSJ060, a Intelligent Power Module of Mitsubishi Corporation.

  • The analysis and comparation of the half-coiled short-pitch windings with different phase belt are presented in the paper. The half-coiled short-pitch windings can supply the odd and even harmonics simultaneously, which can be applied in multiphase bearingless motor (MBLM). The space harmonic distribution of the half-coiled short-pitch windings with two kinds of phase belt is studied wi th respect to different coil pitch, and the suitable coil pitch can be selected from the analysis results to reduce the additional radial force and torque pulse. The two kinds of half-coiled short-pitch windings are applied to the five- and six-phase bearingless motor, and the comparation from the Finite Element Method (FEM) results shows that the winding with $2{\pi}/m$ phase belt is fit for the five phase bearingless motor and the winding with ${\pi}/m$ phase belt is suitable for the six phase bearingless motor. Finally, a five phase surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) bearingless motor is built and the experimental results are presented to verify the validity and feasibility of the analysis. The results presented in this paper will give useful guidelines for design optimization of the MBLM.

  • Acoustic noise and vibration of a BLDC motor is a coupled phenomenon between mechanical characteristics and electromagnetic origins through the motor air-gap. When a relative misalignment of rotor in the air-gap center exists on the assemblage, it is considered to influence the motor system characteristics. In this paper, the back electro motive force(BEMF) is analyzed by Finite Element Method(FEM) and verified by experiments for the SPM and IPM type motors. For magnetic field analysis, a FEM is used to account for the magnetic saturation. Using these results, the FEM is made to determine the appropriate electromagnetic field analysis in BLDC motors with rotor eccentricity ratio. A radial magnetic imbalance force of BLDC motor with rotor eccentricity is analyzed. Results demonstrate that the imbalance force is increased according to the degree of misalignment. An IPM motor, mostly chosen to realize high-speed operation, shows a worse effect on magnetic unbalanced forces and dynamic responses compared with SPM motor due to magnetic saturation when the rotor eccentricity exists.
