The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematical variables involved in two types of service motion in tennis pinpoint and platform stance, to find the fastest serving method. Seven skilled high school tennis players participated, and the kinematics were recorded by the Vicon motion analysis system. For the gathering and analysis of the data workstation, bodybuilder and polygon were used. During the back swing for the pinpoint stance, as the back leg moves forward the COM and the racquet moves more, thus taking 0.04 seconds longer than the platform stance. The body of the subject takes a bow-shape as the subject's foot moves back and their hip moves forward. This movement enables the subject to create more power during the backswing to impact. It also increases the spread of the COM racquet and the serve speed is increase. As there is no forward movement of the foot during the backswing of the platform stance, the COM and the racquet move less and thus the time required is shorter than that for the pinpoint stance by 0.04seconds. Similarly, the time spent creating the power for the serve is shortened, the COM racquet is narrower and the speed is lessened. However, the advantage of this serve is that it increases the stability.
The purpose of this study was to quantitatively observe changes in postural stability of double leg support and single limb stance. Thirty-six healthy subjects participated in the study. Postural stability were examined using Dynamic Balance System. Each trial was 25 sec in duration. Each of 6 conditions{double leg support and single limb stance ; eyes open in stable platform, eyes closed in stable platform, eyes open in dynamic platform) evaluated effect of visual, vestibular, proprioceptive system. Center of balance found for displacement to the left along the X axis in double leg support and to the forward on left toe in single limb stance. Sway index was the lowest in double leg support with eyes open in stable platform and the higher in single limb stance with eyes closed in stance platform. We believe that reliable and valid measures should be used to determine the contributing factors of our client's postural problems so that we can design the most effective treatment possible.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the lower extremities joint moment pattern by two types of service motion in tennis pinpoint and platform stance. Seven skilled high school tennis players participated, and the kinematics were recorded by the Vicon motion analysis system. For the gathering and analysis of the data Workstation, Bodybuilder and polygon were used. joint moments and Ground Reaction Forces for the phases involved were analyzed with the following results. There was a different moment pattern for the lower extremities between the two serve motions. For the platform stance there was only a large dorsal flexion moment but for the pinpoint stance there were other large moments. The flexion and maximum moment of the lower extremities occurred at the point of change from back swing and to the forward swing motion. Therefore, this data provides evidence that there is a high risk of injury at this point.
Purpose: This study examined the difference in the static balance ability according to the visual cues and postural tasks in normal subjects. Methods: Thirty participants (12 male, 18 female; mean age $24.63\pm1.43$ years) stood barefoot on a force platform in a one-legged stance, tandem Romberg stance and tandem Romberg with neck extension stance with a visual cue open and closes. The static balance was assessed by the center of pressure (CoP), surface electromyography root mean square (RMS) of the leg muscles according to the stance position. Results: In the CoP tests, the difference in the unit path length and circumference area was affected by the visual cue according to the stance posture (p<0.01). In the RMS tests, the difference in the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscle was affected by visual cue in accordance with the stance posture (p<0.01). Conclusion: The visual cue and postural task affect the balance ability in normal subjects. Therefore, this study provides clinical evidence that the balance and postural control can be improved. Therapeutic intervention, such as an obstacle course, and a lower leg muscle performance program with a change in the base of support can affect the balance and postural control.
Human body sways continuously to maintain balance during upright stance. A computer-aided instrumentation system using a force platform has been developed to investigate the body balance. The Kistler force platform and amplifiers were only used to obtain the precise measurements, and the data acquisition and analysis software operating on an IBM PC with A/D converter was developed. This study presents methods for the display of platform center of pressure data on stability study. This system can be used as a tool in evaluating the man's ability to balance and disorders of the nervous system.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect on the static balance ability according to vestibular training using ball. Methods : Twenty normal subjects participated and were randomly assigned to either a vestibular training group using ball or a control group. The vestibular training using a ball group exercised 3 times per week over 3 weeks. The static balance was assessed by the center of pressure to the stance position. The participants stood barefoot on a force platform in a normal stance and a one-legged stance with a visual close. Results : In the normal stance, there were no significant differences at CoP surface and CoP speed. However, in a one-legged stance, there were significant differences in the vestibular training group between before and after the program. There was also a significant difference between the vestibular training group and the control group. Conclusion : Vestibular training using ball can be implemented as a therapeutic intervention to improve static balance ability in health adults.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an obstacle height on the balance control of older adults while stepping over an obstacle from a position of quiet stance. Methods: Fifteen community-dwelling healthy older adults (mean age, $74.4\pm4.27$ yrs; age range, 67-82 yrs) volunteered to participate in this study. The subjects performed gait initiation (GI) and they stepped over obstacles of two different heights (10 cm and 18 cm) at a self-paced speed from a position of quiet stance. Their performance was assessed by recording the changes in the displacement of the COP in the anteroposterior (A-P) and mediolateral (M-L) directions using a force platform. Results: The M-L displacement of the COP significantly increased for an 18 cm obstacle height condition as compared to the GI and a 10 cm obstacle height condition (p<0.01). Furthermore, the M-L displacement of the COP for a 10 cm high obstacle was significantly greater for that for the GI (p<0.01). However, the mean of the A-P displacement of the COP was similar between the stepping conditions for the A-P displacement of the COP (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the M-L COP displacement could be a better parameter to identify the dynamic balance control in older adults when negotiating obstacles.

This paper proposes intelligent control of a virtual walking machine that can generate infinite floor for various surfaces and can provide proprioceptive feedback of walking to a user. This machine allows users to participate in a life-like walking experience in virtual environments with various terrains. The controller of the machine is implemented hierarchically, at low-level for robust actuator control, at mid-level fur platform control to compensate the external forces by foot contact, and at high-level control for generating walking trajectory. The high level controller is suggested to generate continuous walking on an infinite floor for various terrains. For the high level control, each independent platform follows a man foot during the swing phase, while the other platform moves back during single stance phase. During double limb support, two platforms manipulate neutral positions to compensate the offset errors generated by velocity changes. This control can, therefore, satisfy natural walking conditions in any direction. Transition phase between the swing and the stance phases is detected by using simple switch sensor system, while human foot motions are sensed by careful calibration with a magnetic motion tracker attached to the shoe. Experimental results of walking simulations at level ground, slope, and stairs, show that with the proposed machine, a general person can walk naturally on various terrains with safety and without any considerable disturbances. This interface can be applied to various areas such as VR navigations, rehabilitation, and gait analysis.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of ground reaction forces of swimming athletes during their starting motion and to find out the most effective starting motions which were used in swimming athletes. The subjects were 9 male and 8 female high school swimming athletes who were athletic career over 7 years and used three starting motions in competition. The ground reaction forces were measured from each athletes performing three starting motion each of the open grap starting motion, closed grap starting motion and track starting motion. For the measurement, the force platform of AMTI company was utilized, and the analysis on measured ground reaction forces were used of Biosoft(Ver. 1.0). The items measured were stance time, Fz max deceleration force and Fz max deceleration force time, Fz mid stance force and Fz mid stance force time, Fz max acceleration force and Fz max acceleration force time, Torque maximum and Torque maximum time, Torque average, Excursion along Y axis of center of pressure of foot, Excursion along X axis of center of pressure of foot, Length of center of pressure of foot, Average velocity of center of pressure of foot. The data measured by the closed grap starting motion, open grap starting motion and track starting motion were analyzed by one-way repeated ANOVA. The results were as follows ; 1. The Fz max deceleration force time, Fz mid stance force, Fz max acceleration force, Torque maximum and Torque maximum time, Excursion along Y axis of center of pressure of foot, Average velocity of center of pressure of foot were significantly fast and large in the closed grap starting motion then open grap starting motion and track starting motion. 2. The Excursion along Y axis of center of pressure of foot was significantly long in the closed grap starting motion then open grap starting motion and track starting motion.
Background : The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency domain characteristics of ground reaction forces during quiet standing on inclined surfaces twenty healthy individuals(10 elderly women $68.78{\pm}3.29$ years and 10 young women $20.90{\pm}0.74$ years) participated. Methods : Subjects stood in quiet stance over a force platform positioned in one of three different fixed positions: flat, down and up. Healthy participants completed with eyes open for 120 s trials. Evaluation of postural control were generally based on the interpretation of center of pressure(COP) time series. The COP have been determined using an experimental setup with 3D kinematic and the ground reaction force system. All the data were expressed means and standard deviation by using SAS package program. Results : SEF 50% were not significant in AP and ML direction according to surface slope of both groups. SEF 95% were showed highest frequency in AP direction on down slope of both groups. MEF were not significant all direction according to surface slopes of elderly women. There was no difference between young and elderly women. Conclusion : Elderly women used to ankle strategy during a quiet stance according to COP perturbation of AP direction showed more expanded than ML direction. SEF 95% were showed highest frequency on down slope in elderly women who showed more used ankle strategy for postural control on down slope.
