Power Quality Control of Hybrid Wind Power Systems using Robust Tracking Controller

  • This paper presents a modeling and a controller design for a hybrid wind turbine generator, especially with an operating mode of battery energy-storage system and a dumpload that contribute to the frequency control of the system while diesel-synchronous unit is not in operation. The proposed control scheme is based on a robust tracking controller, which takes an account of system uncertainties due to the wind flow and load variations. In order to provide robustness for system uncertainties, the range of operation is partitioned into three operating conditions as sub-models in the controller design. In the simulation study, the proposed robust tracking controller (RTC) is compared with the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller. Simulation results show that the effectiveness of the RTC against disturbances caused by wind speed and load variation. Thus, better quality of the hybrid wind power system is achieved.

  • Torque control of wind turbines is important when the wind speed is below the rated speed. The main objective of torque control is to extract the maximum power from the potential aerodynamic power of the wind. Torque control methods for wind turbines are classified as torque-mode control and speed-mode control. In torque-mode control, which is well known and traditionally used in many wind turbines, the torque demand of the generator is proportional to the square of the generator speed. In speed-mode control, a PI controller is used to generate the appropriate torque demand of the generator. In this study, the two torque control methods mentioned above are applied to a 2.75-MW wind turbine; simulation results for real turbulence wind speeds are presented, and the response properties are compared.

  • This paper describes sensorless speed control of brushless DC motors by using direct torque control. Direct torque control offers fast torque response, robust specification of parameter changes, and lower hardware and processing costs compared to vector-controlled drives. In this paper, the current error compensation method is applied to the sensorless speed control of a brushless DC motor. Through this control technique, the controlled stator voltage is applied to the brushless DC motor such that the error between the stator currents in the mathematical model and the actual motor can be forced to decay to zero as time proceeds, and therefore, the motor speed approaches the setting value. This paper discusses the composition of the controller, which can carry out robust speed control without any proportional-integral (PI) controllers. The simulation results show that the control system has good dynamic speed and load responses at wide ranges of speed.

  • The wound induction motor can provide high starting torque and reduced starting current simultaneously by inserting large scale resistor. And this technique is one of the well known methods among the induction motor starting methods and generally used for heavy load starting such as Crain and Cement factories. The conventional PI controller has been widely used in industrial application due to the simple control algorithm and in general, PI controller is used for control of current, torque, position, and speed for the wound induction motor drive system. However, the system may result in poor performance since sensors have to be used, which in turn is limited by the environmental condition. Recently, to overcome these problems, many sensorless vector control methods for the wound induction motor have been studied. This paper presents MRAS method with on-line stator resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor drive. In conventional MRAS method, in low frequency, stator resistance variation can result in poor performance. Therefore, to overcome several shortages of the conventional MRAS caused by parameter variation and enhance robustness of the sensor less vector control, this paper investigates a MRAS method with on-line stator resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through digital simulation.

Design of I-PDA Controller Incorporating FFC for Flow Control Systems

  • In this paper, a design of I-PDA controller by CDM to control a flow process whose structure is first order lag plus a dead time is introduced. The factor of dead time of the process is approximated by second order Pade approximation in order to get a third order system. The simulations show that both of the transient and steady state specifications can be fulfilled. However, the transient response of the I-PDA control system still has long rise time. Then, a feedforward controller (FFC) with two adjustable parameters and one derivative time is introduced into I-PDA control system for improving the speed of the system response. It is shown, from the simulation results, that the performance of the I-PDA control system with suitable FFC has shorter rise time and no overshoot, while settling time remains almost the same. The performance comparison of the proposed control system with the PI control system with and without FFC is also made.

  • This paper designed a robust control of an induction motor using a disturbance cancellation observer of a feedforward control. The speed response of conventional PI controller characteristic is affected by variations of load torque disturbance. In the proposed system, the speed control characteristic using a feedforward control isn't affected by a load torque disturbance. High speed calculation and processing for vector control is carried out by ADMC300 digital signal processor. Validity of the proposed control method is verified through simulation and experimental result.

  • This paper deals with speed control of AC servo motor using a Adaptive fuzzy high gain observer. In this parer, the gain of the observer is properly set up using the fuzzy control and adaptive high gain observer that have a superior transient characteristic and is easy to implement compared the existing method is designed. In order to verify the performance of the Adaptive fuzzy high gain observer which is proposed in this paper, it is compared estimate performance of High-gain Observer and Adaptive High Gain Observer with the computer simulation. Effectiveness of the proposed high gain observer is proved from the experiment to compare the case with a speed sensor to the case with Adaptive fuzzy high gain observer in the speed control of AC servo motor.

  • Using the magnet gear, it is possible to transmit power without mechanical contact. As the drive shaft in a magnet gear-based speed reducer system is isolated from the drive shaft, the system is a two-inertia resonance system that should cope with an external load with the limited air-gap stiffness. On the other hand, the drive shaft or low-speed side is controlled only by the torque of the drive shaft through an air-gap, and the excessive oscillation or the slip can then be generated because of an abrupt disturbance that is different from the general mechanical gear system. Therefore, the disturbance loaded at the low speed side should be measured or estimated, and considered in the control of the driving shaft. This paper proposes a novel full-state feedback controller with a reduced-order observer for the speed reducer system using a magnet gear with a unified harmonic modulator. The control method was verified by simulation and experiment. To estimate the load at the low speed side, a novel observer was designed, in which the new state variable is introduced and the new state equation is formulated. Using a full-state feedback controller including the observer, the test result against disturbance was compared with two D.O.F PI speed controllers. The pole slip was compensated within relatively a short time, and the simulation result about the estimated variable shows a similar tendency to the test result. The test results showed that the magnet gear-based reducer can be applied to an accurate servo system.

  • In the rolling of steel or non-steel metal the most important quality aspect are thickness and flatness. In thickness, there are two important factors. One of them is getting close with accurate goal, nominal gauge, the other is minimize gauge bandwidth, the variation in gauge. In this thesis, we proposed the fuzzy model AGC to minimize gauge variation along the length, developed the rolling mill dynamic model using the math mode of the rolling mill process and the rolling model related with the variety character of the rolling material. We compared the gauge control efficiency of fuzzy model AGC and PI mass flow AGC. We have got a simulation result, that the exit gauge variation of PI mass flow AGC was 2 micron and fuzzy model AGC was 1.2 micron at 1200mpm of rolling speed when each controller was rolling 5 micron of material that is the entry gauge variation.

  • Recently, the needs of system performances such as working speed and processing accuracy in machine tools have been increased. Especially, the speed increment generates harmful heat at both moving part of the machine tools and handicrafts. The heat is a main drawback to progress accuracy of the processing. Hence, a cooler system to control temperature is inevitable for the machine tools. In general, two representative control schemes, hot-gas bypass and variable speed control of a compressor, have been adopted in the water cooler system. In this paper, comparisons of system performances according to the control schemes in a cooler for machine tools were conducted in detail. Each proportional-integral feedback controller for the two different control systems is designed. The system performances, especially the temperature control accuracy and coefficient of performance which is a criterion of energy saving, were mainly analyzed through various experiments using 1RT water cooler system with different two types of control scheme. These evaluations will provide useful information to choose suitable water cooler system for the engineers who design controllers of the cooler system for machine tools.
