  • Based on pile load test results for various pile types that were constructed in-situ and pile design data of prebored PHC piles, the ratio of skin friction to total capacity (SRF) was analyzed. A SRF distribution range from the pile load test results for pilot test prebored PHC piles was 42~99% regardless of relative penetration lengths, soil types, and pile load test types. However, a SRF distribution range from the pile design data for prebored PHC piles was 20~53% regardless of relative penetration lengths and pile diameters. Also, a SRF distribution range from the restrike dynamic pile load test results for pretest working prebored PHC piles was a scattered range of 4~83% regardless of pile diameters, relative penetration lengths and soil types. The scattered SRF of pretest working piles was caused to the quality control issue on the filling of cement milk around piles and this quality control issue should be improved. The average SRF calculated by the current design method was estimated to be 2.2 times lower than the average SRF of the pilot test piles. It is because skin friction resistance is calculated at a very low level. Therefore, a new design method for skin friction will be proposed based on this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to the field application cost effectively and reasonably by developing the functional piles that reinforces shear force. CFP pile (Concrete Filled Pretensioned Spun High Strength Concrete Pile with Ring type Composite shear connectors) developed in this study increases the shear stress by placing composite shear connector and filling the concrete into hollow part of the pile. By placing the reinforcement (H13-8ea) and the reinforcement (H19-8ea) into hollow section inside of PHC piles, it also improves the shear strength due to increasing steel ratio. It reinforces shear strength effectively by dowel force that is generated by putting reinforcement (H13-8) into the holes of composite shear connectors for the composite behavior of filled concrete and PHC pile. The study was reviewed and compared the calculated result of the shear strength by limit state design method highway bridge design standards (2012) and experiment result of the shear strength by KS F 4306. We can design the shear strength reasonably as the safety ratio of 2.20, 2.15, 2.05 is shown comparing to design shear strength, according to design shear strength on each cross sections and the experiment results of the CFP pile.

  • A total of 73 pile design data for prebored PHC piles was analyzed to study the current design method. Based on the design data, a ratio of skin friction to total capacity from the pile design data was about 20~53%. Such low ratio of skin friction to total capacity tends to underestimate skin friction. Considering this tendency, the current design method should be improved. Also, an average design efficiency of PHC pile capacity was 70% and an average design efficiency for bearing capacity of soil or weathered rock was 80%, which shows slightly higher value than the former. This is probably due to the fact that the allowable bearing capacity is estimated to be equal to or slightly higher than the design load. Hence, the allowable bearing capacity should be estimated to be higher than the long-term allowable compressive force of the PHC pile. In the current design method, skin friction is calculated to be about 2.2 times lower than end bearing. The current design method for prebored PHC piles applied foreign design methods without any verification of applicability to the domestic soil or rock condition. Therefore, the current design method for prebored PHC piles should be improved.

  • Extension plate attached PHC piles and bolts spliced PHC piles were installed in field test site. Pile integrities were checked during installation with dynamic pile test and the actual pile conditions after installation were compared with integrity index (${\beta}$ index) by PDA test. Theoretically the break in near pile end or pile end (especially extension plate itself) was very difficult to access by integrity index (${\beta}$ index) and also require a high level of knowledge and field experience on PDA test. First actual wave equation of bolts spliced PHC piles due to bolts spliced equipment can be different with welding spliced. Second wave length of the stress wave from installing can be longer than the height of bolts spliced equipment (about 100 mm). Third Beta processing in PDA analysis function is very difficult to access without a high level of knowledge and field experience on wave equation. Above-mentioned three reasons can make conclusion that traditional PDA test in domestic site can not access the integrity of bolts spliced equipment in bolts spliced PHC piles.

  • Recently, for the design of pile foundations on the soft ground condition, it is recognized that set-up effects are another important factor which influence the characteristics of bearing capacity of pile. In this paper, the thirteen dynamic pile loading tests were performed at the two different construction sites and the end of initial driving(EOID) were also performed and then restrike tests were performed after certain time lag. The H-pile, pipe pile, PHC pile are installed by driving into the loose silty soil and then restrike tests were performed. Nine days after pile driving, the bearing capacity of H and pipe pile were increased whereas there is not bearing capacity increasement with PHC pile. When the dense silty soil, the restrike test results showed that the bearing capacity of H and pipe pile increased up to 1.17 times. The 1-st and 2-nd restrike tests performed after 6 and 12 day, respectively. The results showed that the bearing capacity of PHC pile was decreased but the bearing capacity of piles were increased up to 1.38 times after 13 days with the third restrike test.

  • Composite pile, which is composed of the steel pipe pile in which the large horizontal force acts and the PHC pile in which the small horizontal force acts by a special connecting devices, is being commercialized as a base material for civil engineering structures. The core of such a composite pile can be said to be a design criterion for estimating the joint position and stability of the connection device between steel pipe pile and PHC pile. In Korea, there is no precise specification for the location of composite pile joints. In the LH Design Department (Korea Land & Housing Corporation, 2009), "Application of composite pile design and review of design book marking" was made with reference to Road Design Practice Volume 3 (Korea Expressway Corporation, 2001). this is used as a basis of the design of the composite pile. It can not be regarded as a section change of the composite pile, so it has a limitation in application. Therefore, In this study, we propose a design criterion for the location of the section of the composite pile (joint of steel pipe pile and PHC pile) and evaluate the stability and economical efficiency of it by using experimental method and analytical method. Analysis of composite pile design data installed in 79 domestic bridges abutment showed that the stresses, bending moments, and displacements acting on the pile body and connection of the pile were analyzed. Through the redesign process, it was confirmed that the stresses generated in the connecting device occur within the allowable stress values of the connecting device and the PHC pile. In conclusion, the design proposal of composite pile joint location through empirical case study in this study is an improved design method considering both stability and economical efficiency in designing composite pile.

  • Axial compressive failure loads ($P_n$) of diameter 500 mm and diameter 600 mm A type PHC pile were calculated as 7.7 MN and 10.6 MN, respectively. In the static pile load tests, the maximum axial compressive loads of the above 2 kinds of A type pile were measured as 6.9 MN and 8.8 MN respectively, therefore these measured maximum loads were at the level of 90% and 83% of $P_n$ respectively. Long-term allowable axial compressive loads ($P_a$) of the above 2 kinds of A type pile were 1.7 MN and 2.3 MN respectively. From the bi-directional pile load test data on the prebored PHC piles, it was confirmed that the allowable axial compressive bearing resistance was estimated as 131% of the long-term allowable compressive load of the PHC pile and showed higher than the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the current design method. Therefore, it has been verified that the PHC pile can be used up to the maximum long-term allowable compressive load, and it is suggested that the ultimate pile capacity formula used in the current design for prebored PHC piles should be improved to accommodate the actual capacity.

  • Recently a concept of pile-tip enlarged PHC pile (Ext-PHC pile), for use in the auger-drilled construction method, has been developed and is being implemented in practice. A series of field axial load tests on both PHC and Ext-PHC piles were conducted at an experimental site. In addition, a parametric study on a number of influencing factors was made using a validated finite element model. The field axial load tests indicated an enhanced load-settlement characteristics for the Ext-PHC piles compared with the PHC piles, giving approximately 50% increase in the end bearing capacity. Also found in the results of the parametric study was that the increase in the end bearing capacity of Ext-PHC piles slightly varies with the mechanical properties of supporting ground as well as pile length, in the range of 1.25 to 1.4 time that of PHC. Overall, the results of the field tests as well as the numerical study confirmed that the end bearing capacity of PHC pile can be improved by the concept of.Ext-PHC pile.

  • The objective of this study is theoretical and empirical evaluation of the flexural performance of concrete filled pretensioned spun high strength concrete pile with ring type composite shear connectors (CFP pile). The specimens are comprised of standard CFP pile, PHC pile+composite shear connector+filed concrete (CFP-N-N), standard CFP pile with $1^{st}$ reinforcements (H13-8ea), and standard CFP pile with $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ reinforcements(H19-8ea). Flexural performance evaluation results showed that the ductility is improved with increased steel ratio, which leads to the increased maximum load by 46.4% (with $1^{st}$ reinforcement) and 103.9% (with $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ reinforcements) compared to standard CFP ( CFP-N-N). Comparing with the predicted ultimate limit state values of the CFP pile design method and the experimental results, the design method presented in this study is reasonable since safety factor of 1.23 and 1.40 times for each reinforcement step are secured.

  • Long-term allowable compressive Loads of PHC piles were analyzed based on qualification tests results by 17 small and medium PHC pile producing companies and product specifications by 6 major and 17 small and medium PHC pile producing companies. At the present stage, an average long-term allowable compressive load of PHC pile was designed at 70% level from current design data, and safety factor of 4.0 was applied to long-term allowable compressive loads of PHC pile despite of its excellent quality. Most quality standards of PHC pile are specified at KS F 4306. But compressive strength test method of spun concrete is specified at KS F 2454. As a result of analyzing quality test data supplied by each manufacturer, all quality test results showed higher performances than standard values. Therefore, it was considered that the capacity of PHC pile can be used up to the maximum allowable compressive load of PHC pile when PHC pile is designed.
