Autoxidation Core@Anti-Oxidation Shell Structure as a Catalyst Support for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) provide zero emission power sources for electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. Although significant progresses for the widespread application of electrochemical energy technology have been achieved, some drawbacks such as catalytic activity, durability, and high cost of catalysts still remain. Pt-based catalysts are regarded as the most efficient catalysts for sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their prohibitive cost limits the commercialization of PEMFCs. Therefore, we proposed a NiCo@Au core shell structure as Pt-free ORR electrocatalyst in PEMFCs. NiCo alloy was synthesized as core to introduce ionization tendency and autoxidation reaction. Au as a shell was synthesized to prevent oxidation of core NiCo and increase catalytic activity for ORR. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, electrochemical properties, and PEMFCs performance of the novel NiCo@Au core-shell as a catalyst for ORR in PEMFCs application. Based on results of this study, possible mechanism for catalytic of autoxidation core@anti-oxidation shell in PEMFCs is suggested.

병렬 사형유로를 채택한 냉각판을 통한 고분자 전해질 연료전지의 균일 냉각에 대한 전산유체역학 해석 연구 (Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on Uniform Cooling of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells by Parallel Multi-pass Serpentine Flow Fields)

  • 고분자 전해질 연료전지(PEMFC)의 열관리는 성능 향상과 내구성 측면에서 중요한 문제이다. 일반적으로 냉각수 순환 유로를 가진 냉각판이 여러 개의 단전지 사이에 삽입되어 PEMFC 내부에서 발생하는 반응열을 외부로 배출한다. 본 연구에서는 개선된 병렬 사형유로(MPSFF)를 향상된 냉각성능을 가진 냉각판 유로형상으로 제안하고, 이를 전산유체역학(CFD) 해석을 통하여 평가하였다. 비교를 위하여 냉각수 유로로 일반적으로 사용되는 사형유로 및 병렬형유로의 냉각성능에 대한 계산도 수행하였다. CFD 결과는 개선된 병렬 사형유로가 냉각판 표면에서의 온도의 비균일도를 상당히 감소시키고, 따라서 PEMFC의 내구성과 성능을 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여주었다.

  • There is a worldwide interest In the development and commercialization of PEMFCs for vehicular and stationary applications. The major problem in the practical use of PEMFCs is the deactivation of the Pt anode electrocatalyst by the adsorption of carbon monoxide. Therefore, intensive work has been devoted to finding electrocatalysts that are tolerant to CO in hydrogen at operating temperatures bellow $100^{\circ}C$. Also, DMFC is considered to be one of the most promising technologies for energy generation. But, the most important problem associated with the DMFC is the slow reaction rate of methanol oxidation and the second major problem is fuel crossover. So, the performance of a state-of-the-art DMFC is considerably lower than that of hydrogen-fuelled PEMFC. In this research, the preparation and characterization of electrode materials will be introduced. Also, some electrochemical techniques for the characterization of PEMFCs will be presented.

Recent Developments of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Design

  • PEMFC has high potential for future development due to its high energy density, eco-friendliness, and high energy efficiency. When it becomes small, light and flexible, it can be competitive as an energy source for portable devices or flexible electronic devices. However, the use of hard and heavy materials for structural rigidity and uniform contact pressure transmission has become an obstacle to reducing the weight and flexibility of PEMFCs. This review intends to provide an example of the application of a new structure and material for lightweight and flexibility. As a lightweight PEMFC, a tubular design is presented and structural advantages through numerical modeling are explained. Manufacturing methods to realize the structural advantages and possibilities of tubular PEMFCs are discussed. In addition, the materials and manufacturing processes used to fabricate lightweight and flexible PEMFCs are described and factors affecting performance are analyzed. Strategies and structural improvements of light and flexible movements are discussed according to the component parts.

  • The influence of potential and humidity on the electrochemical carbon corrosion in high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(HT-PEMFCs) is investigated by measuring $CO_2$ emission at different potentials for 30 min using on-line mass spectrometry. These results are compared with low tempterature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(LT-PEMFCs) operated at lower temperature and higher humidity condition. Although the HT-PEMFC is operated at non humidified condition, the emitted $CO_2$ in the condition of HT-PEMFC is more than LT-PEMFC at the same potential in carbon corrosion test. Thus, carbon corrosion shows a stronger positive correlation with the cell temperature. In addition, the presence of a little amount of water activate electrochemical carbon corrosion considerably in HT-PEMFC. With increased carbon corrosion, changes in fuel cell electrochemical characteristics become more noticeable and thereby indicate that such corrosion considerably affects fuel cell durability.

PEMFC 금속분리판의 내식성에 미치는 DLC 코팅층의 두께 및 결함의 영향 (Effects of Thickness and Defects of DLC Coating Layer on Corrosion Resistance of Metallic Bipolar Plates of PEMFCs)

  • DLC coatings have been widely applied in industrial fields that require high corrosion resistance due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and chemical stability. In this research, effects of DLC coating thickness and defects on corrosion resistance were investigated for application of metallic bipolar plates in polymer membrane electrolyte fuel cells (PEMFCs). Results revealed that a DLC coating thickness of 0.7 ㎛ could lead to a defect size reduction of about 75.9% compared to that of 0.3 ㎛.As a result of potentiodynamic polarization experiments, the current density under a potential of 0.6 V was measured to be less than 1 ㎂/cm2,which was an excellent value. Inparticular, the delamination ratio and the decrease rate of maximum pitting depth were up to 84.8% and 63.3%, respectively, with an increase in the DLC coating thickness. These results demonstrate that DLC coating thickness and defects are factors that can affect corrosion resistance of DLC coating and its substrate.

고분자 전해질 막 연료전지 응용을 위한 탄화수소계 기반 가교 전해질 막의 연구동향 (Research of Cross-linked Hydrocarbon based Polymer Electrolyte Membranes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Applications)

  • 고분자 전해질 막 연료전지(polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, PEMFC)는 환경오염물질 배출이 없는 친환경 에너지 변환 장치로 주목을 받고 있다. PEMFC의 구성요소 중 고분자 전해질 막(polymer electrolyte membrane, PEM)은 음극에서 발생되는 수소이온을 양극으로 전달하는 역할과 동시에 분리막으로써 연료의 투과를 차단하는 역할을 수행하는 핵심 소재이다. 대표적으로 Nafion®과 같은 과불소화계 고분자 전해질 막이 상용화 되어있지만 높은 단가 및 분해 시 환경오염물질이 배출되는 단점이 존재하여, 이를 대체할 탄화수소계 고분자를 활용한 전해질 막 개발에 관한 연구들이 수행되고 있다. 높은 수소이온 전도도를 가지며 동시에 우수한 물리·화학적 안정성을 갖는 탄화수소계 고분자 기반 전해질 막을 개발하기 위해 가교 구조가 도입된 전해질 막을 개발하는 연구들이 보고되고 있다. 본 총설은 가교 전해질 막을 제조하기 위해 이온교환 작용기가 도입된 탄화수소계 고분자를 활용하여 다양한 종류의 가교 전해질 막을 제조하는 방법에 대해 논하였다.

  • An electrolyte membranes for high temperature/low humidity is a demand for the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, we prepared hybrid membranes, which have novel glass content in the hydrophilic and hydrophobic part of sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) by in-situ sol-gel synthesis of various functional silane. The effect of silicate from functional silane content on the proton conductivity, water uptake of the hybrid membranes under high temperature and low humidity was quantitatively identified. The silicate content contributed to the enhancement of not only proton conductivity, but also water retention ability for PEMFCs operation.
