A large diameter roundwood is an important element of Korean traditional buildings, Hanok, and is hard to be dried without surface cracks. Four different pretreatments, such as pre-cracking, oil heating, kerfing-oil heating and PEG impregnation, were investigated for reducing the surface cracks of large-diameter roundwood specimens during heat treatment. The roundwood specimens of pre-cracking, oil heating and kerfing-oil heating showed surface cracks during pretreatment, but that of PEG impregnation did not. It was confirmed that kerfing reduced the total crack width. Among the four pretreatments and control only the PEG impregnation roundwood specimen had no crack on both outer and inner surfaces after heat treatment. The PEG impregnation specimen shrank only 1.6% in the tangential direction while the pre-cracking did 8.0%.
This study was carried out to experiment the dimensional stabilization of woods of red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) and sugi(Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) by vacuum impregnation of polyehtylene glycols(PEG) with mo. wt. 200, 400, 600, 1000; polypropylene glycols (PPG) with mo. wt. 425,725 ; PEG-acryloylates, and PPG-acryloylates synthesized, and then by water soaking. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The density of sapwood and heartwood was different from each other in both species. 2. The PEG and PEG-macromers with lower molecular weight by impregnation has increased the density of wood specimens more higher, thereby caused their higher volume expansion, and those with higher molecular weight than 600 has tended to down their density increment. 3. Before and after water soaking, the density decrease of specimen impregnated was high in woods impregnated with simple PEG and PPG, while lower in specimens impregnated with PEG-macromers and PPG-macromers. 4. So PEG-macromer was expected to hold the original dimension of decayed wood for antiques, but it was necessary to develop another penetration method as well as aqueous solvent.
PEG (Polyethylene glycol) impregnation in wood reduces the occurrence of checking during kiln drying. The volumetric shrinkages of wood PEG impregnated by pressure (PEG-P) or soaking (PEG-S) methods, and oven-dried by vent (VD) or air-tight (AD) methods were measured and compared with the controls. The average oven-dry weight of PEG impregnated specimens was larger than that of the controls by 3.6 g, but was not influenced by the drying methods. The average of the total volumetric shrinkage of PEG-P-VD specimens was the least (2.3%), while that of CON-S-AD specimens was the largest (28.9%). Within a drying method the total volumetric shrinkage of the control was the largest followed by PEG-S and PEG-P specimens, which implied that residual PEG in wood restrained its shrinkage during drying.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the treatment effect of PEG soln which is a common dimensional stabilizer to green log. sawing panel etc, on bonding product including plywood widely-used in secondary processing unit. The 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. with molecular weight of 400, 1.000 and 4,000 were prepared respectively, and also dipping the veneer in the PEG soln. spreading the PEG soln. on veneer and mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive were allowed. Then the ratio of PEG impregnation on veneer, the adhesive strength of plywood were epitomized as follows: The ratio of impregnation by PEG 4,000 at dipping condition was highest. while that by PEG 400 at same condition was lowest. However, the effect of PEG molecular weight on the ratio of impregnation at spreading condition did not occur. 2. The adhesive strength was great in the order of 4,000>400>1,000 in molecular weight of PEG at dipping and spreading conditions. In case of mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive, the adhesive strength was great in the order of 400>1,000>4,000 in molecular weight of PEG. Throughout three treatment conditions, PEG 400 was relatively favourable with about 10kg/$cm^2$ dry strength. 3. The adhesive strength was great 10 the order of spreading >dipping >mixing condition. 4. Although adhesive strength with the 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. was decreased by 35% and over, compared to control (non-treatment) adhesive strength, all types of PEG treatment except mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive exceeded the standard dry strength for common use panel. 7.5kg/$cm^2$. 5. In warm water-proof test, the adhesive strengths by all PEG treatment conditions were less than the standard wet strength, 7.5kg cot, and also delamination of glue line occured mostly in mixing in the PEG soln. in the adhesive condition.

Archaeological waterlogged woods require a process of dimensional stabilization for their conservation. PEG is the most widely used in the conservation of archaeological waterlogged wood. One of the easiest and commonly used methods is the impregnation of 40% polyethylene glycol followed by vacuum freeze drying. However, the waste fluid produced from the PEG treatment is black in color and has a severe odor due to the organic matter extracted from the wood. Thus It cannot be recycled and it was just thrown out. Color of waste fluid can be decolored with oxidation reaction by hydrogen peroxide. Properties of PEG before and after preservation treatment, and after oxidation with $H_2O_2$ were not changed. Dimensional stability of archaeological waterlogged Salix koreensis Andersson was studied with pure or recycled PEG. The ratio of impregnation solutions were 10:0, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 0:10 (pure PEG : recycled PEG). Impregnation process was carried out by putting the wood specimens 10% PEG solution for 5days, 20% for 5 days, 30% for 5 days finally 40% for 5 days. All of the specimens showed the weight change rate of 25%. SEM results provided that the dimensional change of were less than 4% PEG impregnated specimens. Comparing with pure PEG impregnation system, conservation precess mixed PEG also showed no significant changes. Conclusively, the recycled PEG can be used for archeological waterlogged wood conservation precess.
This study was carried to provide basic data for the research of the effect of PEG impregnation on preventing wood from cracking during heat treatment. Three popular softwood species were selected for investigating the PEG penetration rate and retention depending on PEG molecular weight, PEG retention after heat treatment and their EMCs. The average retentions of PEG400 were reversely proportional to the basic densities of three species and those of the other PEGs showed similar behaviour as well. It is obvious that PEG retention decreased as PEG molecular weight increased with a species. PEG impregnation increased or decreased the moisture contents of the specimens within 2%, and increased their basic densities by 16.8% as a maximum. The Weight Percentage Losses of PEG400 during heat treatment were the largest among three PEG levels, which implied that lower molecular weight PEG leached more than the highers. There was less difference in EMC between PEG impregnated and control specimens at low RH, but their difference increased at high RH.
The novel Aloe gels were prepared with dewatering and impregnation by soaking (DIS) processing of Aloe vera leaf slice at four different temperatures (25, 35, 45 and $55^{\circ}C$), using dehydration solution of 40% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG4000). The PEG-impregnation to Aloe vera leaf slice during DIS was observed depending on immersion temperature, and the PEG-impregnated Aloe vera gel (PEG-i-AVG) obtained was characterized using $^1H$ NMR, FT-IR, GPC, XRD and TGA. The PEG-i-AVG had the higher levels of Aloe bioactives (glucomannan and O-acetyl contents) and better quality indices by $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy than those of native Aloe gel. Also, the obtained Aloe gel maintained the bimodal patterns in higher molecular weight region by GPC indicating no degradation of polysaccharide from native Aloe gel. The result observed by SEM confirmed a surface modification by forming the porous structure, and TGA result exhibited better thermal stability than that of native Aloe gel. XRD result revealed that the crystalline structure in Aloe gel was led by incorporation of PEG. Significant decrease of %insolubility and high enhancement of water solubility index were observed, respectively, and highly ordered conformation such as a helix structure was also indicated by Congo red reaction. We concluded that the modification effect for enhancing function of native Aloe gel was successfully obtained by DIS process using PEG as a dehydrating agent. These results suggested that this DIS process had a high potential for developing a new minimally processed product from Aloe vera leaf.
It is reported that excavated carbonized wooden objects tend to have more peeling and deformation stemming from the coexisting of different types of parts of objects. However, there is little research results on this. In this experiment, the sugar alcohol method was used and then compared with the results of the PEG4000 method which widely uses. This research targets: prediction of strength by weight increase, investigation of the dimensional stabilization effects by measuring the rate of shrinkage change, condition of drug penetration and change of wood texture by using a scanning electron microscope. As the results, the PEG4000 method needs a phased approach over 80% impregnation. On the other hand, the S A method remains steady from over 40% impregnation. The Deformation of carbonized wooden objects used in this experiment is considered as the phenomenon by shrinkage of non-carbonized parts. The PEG4000 method is verified the shrinkage in the samples treated with 20%, 40% and 60%; the S A method is verified the shrinkage in the samples treated with 20%.
The conservation has been conducted for the fragments of an wooden boat in the Neolithic Age, excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea. The vacuum-freeze drying have been applied to mostly to the small relics, such as wooden lacquerwares or small wooden goods etc.. Therefore, the large objects like a wooden boats have been treated almost by air-drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG solution. The air-drying is needed to impregnate with PEG aqueous solution during long period and run the risk of the fault generation. This report explain an example adapted for the fragments of the wooden boat by humidity-controlled drying(HCD) with slow adjusting moisture content. We did the chemical pre-treatment, PEG aqueous solution. The concentration of the aqueous solution was increased gradually from 10% to 80%. After the impregnation, the objects were dried by the HCD. The dimensional stability of the fragments after treatment was good.
Among the treatment results of test samples of the antique lacquer-ware, the treatment with PEG#3,350 40% solution displayed excellent effect with low shrinkage ratio; in weight gain the treatment with Sucrose 19%+Glycerin 1%(t-butanol 5% in water) solution showed consistent increase. However during the impregnation process of Sucrose, the weight of the testing samples decreased by dehydration because the inner part of the test samples and the treatment solution showed concentration gradient. Therefore, we concluded longer impregnation period should be necessary to prevent dehydration. Since both higher and lower molecular weight treatment chemicals could penetrate into the wood of the lacquer-ware, air drying and conditioning after impregnation treatment with high concentration chemicals would be possible, as well as vacuum freeze-drying.
