This study was conducted to investigate the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in combination with BN/PE film on the shelf life and quality of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce during cold storage. The total mesophilic population in the sample packed in BN/PE film under MAP conditions was dramatically reduced in comparison with that of PE film, PE film under MAP conditions, and BN/PE film. The $O_2$ concentration in the BN/PE film under MAP conditions decreased slightly as the storage period progressed. The coloration of the iceberg lettuce progressed the slowest when it was packaged in BN/PE film under MAP conditions, followed by BN/PE film, PE film, and PE film under MAP conditions. The shelf life of fresh-cut iceberg lettuce packaged in the BN/PE film under MAP conditions was extended by more than 2 days at $10^{\circ}C$ as compared with that of the BN/PE film in which the extension effect was more than 2 days longer than that of PE, PET, and OPP films.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of surface modification on the fibrovascular ingrowth into porous polyethylene (PE) spheres ($Medpor^{(R)}$), which are used as an anophthalmic socket implant material. To make the inert, hydrophobic PE surface hydrophilic, nonporous PE film and porous PE spheres were subjected to plasma treatment and in situ acrylic acid (AA) grafting followed by the immobilization of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide. The surface-modified PE was evaluated by performing surface analyses and tested for fibroblast adhesion and proliferation in vitro. In addition, the porous PE implants were inserted for up to 3 weeks in the abdominal area of rabbits and, after their retrieval, the level of fibrovascular ingrowth within the implants was assessed in vivo. As compared to the unmodified PE control, a significant increase in the hydrophilicity of both the AA-grafted (PE-g-PAA) and RGD-immobilized PE (PE-g-RGD) was observed by the measurement of the water contact angle. The cell adhesion at 72 h was most notable in the PE-g-RGD, followed by the PE-g-PAA and PE control. There was no significant difference between the two modified surfaces. When the cross-sectional area of tissue ingrowth in vivo was evaluated, the area of fibrovascularization was the largest with PE-g-RGD. The results of immunostaining of CD31, which is indicative of the degree of vascularization, showed that the RGD-immobilized surface could elicit more widespread fibrovascularization within the porous PE implants. This work demonstrates that the present surface modifications, viz. hydrophilic AA grafting and RGD peptide immobilization, can be very effective in inducing fibrovascular ingrowth into porous PE implants.
The surface properties of carbon microfibers (CMFs) are modified by chemical deposition of carbon nanofibers via the so-called ethylene processing. CMFs and the modified CMFs (MCMFs) are investigated as reinforcement additives to fabricate polyethylene (PE) composites with enhanced mechanical characteristics. The mechanical properties of the PE-MCMF composites are found to be better and favorable for applications under harsh climatic conditions such as those in Siberia. Improved adhesive interaction between MCMFs and PE is responsible for these enhanced mechanical properties.

In this paper, we present an optimized design of RS(23,17) decoder for UWB, which uses the pipeline structured-modified Euclidean(PS-ME) algorithm. Firstly, the modified processing element(PE) block is presented in order to get rid of degree comparison circuits, registers and MUX at the final PE stage. Also, a degree computationless decoding algorithm is proposed, so that the hardware complexity of the decoder can be reduced and high-speed decoder can be implemented. Additionally, we optimize Chien search algorithm, Forney algorithm, and FIFO size for UWB specification. Using Verilog HDL, the proposed decoder is implemented and synthesized with Samsung 65nm library. From synthesis results, it can operate at clock frequency of 250MHz, and gate count is 17,628.

Recombinant immunotoxins are hybrid cytotoxic proteins designed to selectively kill cancer cells. A divalent immunotoxins, [B3(FabH1)-PE38]2, was constructed by recombining Fab domain of B3 antibody as a cell-targeting domain and Pseudo monas exotoxin A (PE) as a cytotoxic domain. Monoclonal antibody, B3, is the murine antibody (IgG1k) directed against Lewis Y-related carbohydrate antigens, which are abundant on the surface of many carcinomas. Fab fragment of this antibody was used in this study with the modified hinge sequence where last two cysteines out of three were mutated to serine. PE is a 66 kDa bacterial toxin that kills eukaryotic cells by inhibiting protein synthesis with ADP ribosylation of ribosomal elongation factor 2 (EF2). Fc region of B3 antibody was substituted with the truncated form of PE (38 kDa, PE38) on DNA level. [B3(FabH1)-PE38]2 was formed by disulfide bond between cysteines in the modified hinge region of B3(FabH1)-PE38. Each polypeptide for recombinant immunotoxins was overexpressed in Escherichia coli and collected as inclusion bodies. Each inclusion body was solubilized and refolded, and cytotoxic effects were measured. Divalent immunotoxins, [B3(FabH1)-PE38]2, had ID50 values of about 10 ng/mL on A431 cell lines and about 4 ng/mL on CRL1739 cell lines. Control immunotoxins, B3(scFv)-PE40, had ID50 values of about 28 ng/mL on A431 cell lines and about 41 ng/mL on CRL1739 cell lines. Divalent immunotoxins, [B3(FabH1)-PE38]2, had higher cytotoxic effects than B3(scFv)-PE40 control immunotoxins.

The worldwide effects of COVID-19 have led to a surge in online shopping and contactless services. The consumption pattern has caused the issues such as the environmental pollution together with the increase of plastic waste. Reducing the reliance on the petroleum based plastic use for the package and replacing it with environmentally friendly material are the simple ways in order to solve those problems. Paper is an eco-friendly product with high recyclability as the food packaging materials but has still poor barrier properties. A barrier coating on surface of the paper can be achieved with the proper packaging materials featuring water, gas and grease barrier. Polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) coatings which are generally laminated or coated to paper are widely used in food packaging applications to protect products from moisture and provide water or grease resistance. However, recycling of packaging containing PE or PP matrix is limited and costly because those films are difficult to degrade in the environment. This study investigated the recyclability of modified acrylic emulsion coating papers compared to PE and PP polymer matrixes as well as their mechanical and gas barrier properties. The results showed that PE or modified acrylic emulsion coated papers had better mechanical properties compared to the uncoated paper as a control. PE or PP coating papers showed strong oil resistance property, achieving a kit rating of 12. Those papers also had a significantly higher percentage of screen reject during the recycling process than modified acrylic coated paper which had a screen rejection rate of 6.25%. In addition an uncoated paper had similar value of a screen rejection rate. It may suggest that modified acrylic emulsion coating paper can be more easily recycled than PE or PP coating papers. The overall results of the study found that modified acrylic emulsion coating paper would be a viable alternative to suggest a possible solution to an environmental problem as well as enhancing the weak mechanical and poor gas barrier properties of the paper against moisture.
There have been many difficulties in utilization of polyethylene (PE) container for volatile ingredients because of its high permeability. We selected glycol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) lately being used and evaluated the stability of 0.5% chlorobutanol solution for PETG. We used PE bottle, glass flask and rubber stoppered vial for comparison and assayed chlorobutanol contents of the samples stored at various temperatures for nine weeks by HPLC method. The results indicated that the stability of chlorobutanol in PETG container was almost similar to that in glass flask, and was superior to that in PE bottle and rubber stoppered vial.
Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was assessed in terms of extending the shelf life of Solidago virgaurea spp. gigantea. In June 2005 Solidago virgaurea spp. gigantea were harvested from Ulleung Island, packaged in $30\;{\mu}m$ PP, $30\;{\mu}m$ Antifogging-OPP, $30\;{\mu}m$ LDPE, $18\;{\mu}m$ Macroperforated-HDPE, $60\;{\mu}m$ nylon/PE, or $85\;{\mu}m$ PVC/PE film, then stored at 4, 10 or $20^{\circ}C$ for up to 14 days. The $O_2$ concentration decreased to $9{\sim}10%$ in the PP and A-OPP packaging, to $12{\sim}16%$ in LDPE packaging, and to 2% in nylon/PE and PVC/PE packaging at $10^{\circ}C$. The $CO_2$ concentration increased to 5% at $10^{\circ}C$ in PP, A-OPP and LDPE packaging, but increased consistently in the nylon/PE and PVC/PE packaging. Weight loss was markedly reduced by all MAP films except M-HDPE, and which was enhanced with decreasing storage temperature. The soluble solids and pH were not affected by the packaging material at $4^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$, but were affected at $20^{\circ}C$. The highest score for sensory qualities (appearance, color and overall acceptability) was obtained for vegetables stored at $4^{\circ}C$ in PP films. Our results show that MAP using PP films and $4^{\circ}C$ storage can effectively maintain the quality of Solidago virgaurea spp. gigantea.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the skeletal, dental, and soft-tissue treatment effects of nonextraction therapy using the modified C-palatal plate (MCPP) to those of premolar extraction (PE) treatment in adult patients with Class II malocclusion. Methods: Pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalographs of 40 adult patients with Class II malocclusion were retrospectively analyzed. The MCPP group comprised 20 patients treated with total arch distalization of the maxillary arch while the PE group comprised 20 patients treated with four PE. Fifty-eight linear and angular measurements were analyzed to assess the changes before and after treatment. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and multivariate analysis of variance were performed to evaluate the treatment effects within and between the two groups. Results: The MCPP group presented 3.4 mm of retraction, 1.0 mm of extrusion, and $7.3^{\circ}$ lingual inclination of the maxillary central incisor. In comparison, the PE group displayed greater amount of maxillary central incisor retraction and retroclination, mandibular incisor retraction, and upper lip retraction (5.3 mm, $14.8^{\circ}$, 5.1 mm, and 2.0 mm, respectively; p < 0.001 for all). In addition, the MCPP group showed 4.0 mm of distalization and 1.3 mm of intrusion with $2.9^{\circ}$ distal tipping of the maxillary first molars. Conclusions: These findings suggest the MCPP is an effective distalization appliance in the maxillary arch. The amount of incisor retraction, however, was significantly higher in the PE group. Therefore, four PE may be recommended when greater improvement of incisor position and soft-tissue profile is required.

Poyethylene(PE) films could be modified by radiation grafting of N-vinyl pyrollidone(NVP) using radiation. FTIR spectra was used to confirm the modification of PE films. The modified films were activated by one-step or two-step methods for electroless Cu plating. Morphology of metallized films has been investigated. Electroless Cu plating onto the modified films depends mainly on the grafting degree and activation type. The electrical conductivity and adhesion of the metallized films has been investigated and tested in regard of grafting degree of samples.
