Polyethylene(PE) films were photocrosslinked by continuous UV irradiation. Benzophenone addition as low as 1wt% into the PE film increased the gel fraction up to 96%. The photocrosslinking was attributed to the recombination of PE radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of the added benzophenone. Also the crossliked PE showed higher thermal stability and decreased crystallinity with increasing UV energy as shown by TGA, XRD and DSC analysis. It was also possible to fix 5.4% octadecane into PE by the photocrosslinking. The crosslinked PE film containing octadecane showed lower tensile strength and modulus coupled with higher extension compared to that without octadecane, which can be used as a new plasticizing method for the crosslinked PE film.
Environmentally-friendly polymer composite films were manufactured from cellulose acetate (CA) and polyethylene (PE). To investigate the optimum manufacturing conditions for the composite, various tests such as thermal analysis, surface observation, IR spectra analysis, and elongation ratio of polymer composite films were carried out. The mixing ratio of each element and manufacture condition was found to be very important for the best goods.
Surface modification of hydrophobic polymeric materials to be hydrophilic or to have specific functional groups is of great importance for a diversity of applications of the materials. In this study, polyethylene (PE) film surfaces were modified by vapor phase photografting of hydrophilic vinyl monomers with different functional groups. The functional monomers were introduced on PE films by introducing the monomers in vapor phase using a vapor phase photografting apparatus designed by our laboratory. Functional monomers used were acrylic acid (negatively chargeable), acrylamide and allylalcohol (neutral), and allylamine and N,N-dimethyl aminopropyl acryamide (positively charged). The functional monomer-grafted PE film surfaces were characterized by the measurement of water contact angles and the attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The vapor phase photografting seems to be effective means for introduction of various functional groups onto polymeric substrates.

In order to investigate the effects of crystal structure in electrical breakdown of polyethylene film. Low molecular materials in polyethylene are removed by the method as follow. Polyethylene was dissolved in xylene and filtered through a glass fiber filter. And then, a polyethylene thin films of thickness $0.5 - 0.9{\mu}m$ are prepared with heat treatment from solution casting. To evaluate the performance of PE film, Electrical breakdown of PE film are measured on M( Al) - I (PE)-M(Al) system.
Physical analysis of some composite films of outer packaging at process cheeses in Korea is as following. In comparison with four composite films, tensile strength is $72.2{\mu}PET/PVDC/PE/AL-vac/PE\;film\;MD9.55kg/15mm,\;TD8.95kg/15mm>79.3{\mu}PET/PVDC/L-LDPE\;film\;MD5.37kg/15mm,\;TD5.01kg/15mm>96.9{\mu}PE/PVDC/PE\;film\;MD5.42kg/15mm,\;TD4.73kg/15mm>61.6{\mu}PVDC/PE/AL-vac/CPS\;film\;MD4.65kg/15mm,\;TD4.22kg/15mm$. Abstract The effect of the film stress on the thermal stability of TiSi, films under the dielectric overcoat was investigated. TiS$i_2$ films with the sheet resistance of 1.2 ohm/sq. were produced by a solid-state reaction between sputtered Ti film and single-crystalline Si in an RTA (rapid thermal anneal) machine. Dielectric overcoats such as the USG (Undoped Silicate Glass, Si$O_2$) film and the PE-SiN(S$i_3$$N_4$) film were deposited by AP-CVD and PE-CVD, respectively, on the TiS$i_2$ film. The thermal stability of the TiSi, film was evaluated by changes in the sheet resistance, film stress and microstructure after furnace anneals at 90$0^{\circ}C$. Agglomeration of the TiSi2 film high temperatures results in the increase of sheet resistance and the decrease of tensile stress of TiSi, film. The stress level of the TiSi" PE-SiN and ~SG films at 90$0^{\circ}C$C was 1.3${\times}{10^{9}}$, 1.25 ${\times}{10^{10}}$, 2.26 ${\times}{10^{10}}$ dyne/c$m^2$ in tensile, respectively. Dielectric films deposited by CVD on TiSi, was effective on preventing agglomeration of TiSi,. The PE-SiN film mproved the thermal stability of TiSi, more effectively than the AP-CVD USG film. It is considered that agglomeration of the TiS$i_2$ film under the stress of dielectric overcoat at high temperature can be caused by a diffusional flow of atom called Nabarro-Herring microcreep.reep.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of packaging materials (Ny/PE, PET/Al/PE, PET/PE/LDPE/CPP, PET/Al/Ny/CPP films, and bottle) and packaging methods (atmosphere and vacuum) on the physicochemical properties of Onion Kimchi and Rosemary-onion Kimchi stored at $5^{\circ}C$. Reducing sugar contents and pHs of Onion Kimchi and Rosemary-onion Kimchi decreased, whereas levels of titratible acidity and vit C contents increased with increasing the storage time. The fermentation of Rosemary-onion Kimchi was slower than that of Onion Kimchi. PET/PE/LDPE/CPP film was the most effective for Onion Kimchi packaging among all packaging materials tested.

This study investigated the effect of perforation by the Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella) larvae on various flexible food-packaging films, in relation to their thickness and type. Among the various flexible packaging films, polyethylene (PE), aluminum foil (AF), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were selected for this study due to their wide usage in food packaging. Based on their thickness, film penetration by P. interpunctella larvae was measured as in following order: PP, $20{\mu}m$; AF, $9{\mu}m$; PET, $12{\mu}m$; PP, $30{\mu}m$; PS, $30{\mu}m$; PE, $40{\mu}m$; PE, $35{\mu}m$; PS, $60{\mu}m$; and PET, $16{\mu}m$. P. interpunctella larvae rapidly penetrated through the packaging films regardless of their thickness and type. In particular, it was observed that PP of $20{\mu}m$ and PS of $30{\mu}m$ were completely penetrated by P. interpunctella larvae within 72 h, rendering thin PP and PS films less valuable as anti-insect packaging films. Our results show that the perforations by P. interpunctella larvae were observed in the thin films. These results imply that each packaging film has a marginal thickness against the perforations by P. interpunctella larvae.
Pyrolysis characteristics of waste plastic films were investigated by using a thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Thermogravimetric analysis results revealed that the pyrolysis of waste plastic films can be divided into two distinct reactions; (1) the decomposition reaction of starch at between 200 and $370^{\circ}C$ and (2) that of other plastic polymers such as PS, PP, PE at between 370 and $510^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis results obtained by using the revised Ozawa method indicated that the apparent activation energy of the pyrolysis reaction of waste plastic films was also changed dramatically according to the different decomposition reactions of two major waste plastic film components. Py-GC/MS results also revealed that the typical pyrolyzates of each polymer in waste plastic films were levoglucosan (starch), terephthalic acid (PET), styrene monomer, dimer, and trimer (PS), methylated alkenes (PP), and triplet peaks (PE) composed of alkadiene/alkene/alkane. The phthalate, used as a polymer additive, was also detected on the pyrogram of waste plastic films mixture.

It is very important to select superior inter-layer PMD(Pre Metal Dielectric) materials which can act as penetration barrier to various impurities created by CMP processes. In this paper, hot carrier degradation and device characteristics were studied with material variation of PMD-1 layers, which were split by LP-TEOS, SR-Oxide, PE-Oxynitride, PE-Nitride, PE-TEOS films. It was observed that the oxynitride and nitride using plasma was greatly decreased in hot carrier effect in comparison with silicon oxide. Consequently, silicon oxide turned out to be a better PMD-1 material than PE-oxynitride and PE-nitride. Also, LP-TEOS film was the best PMD-1 material Among the silicon oxides.
