This study presented facile method of cell patterning using fabricated PDMS patterns on polyelectrolyte coated surface. This basic principle is the fabrication of functional surface presenting two orthogonal surfaces such as cell adhesive and repellent properties. Cell adhesive surface was firstly fabricated with simple coating of polyelectrolyte multilayer. And then, the desired patterns of PDMS for the prevention of nonspecific binding of cells were transferred onto the previously formed thin film of polyelectrolyte multilayer. Thus, we could prepare novel functional surface simultaneously containing PDMS and polyelectrolyte region. As expected, the PDMS regions showed effective prevention of nonspecific binding of cell and the other region, exposed polyelectrolyte area, provided cell adhesive environment. The height of formed PDMS structure was about 100 nm. Based on this method, cell patterning can be successfully obtained with various pattern shapes and sizes. Therefore, we expect that this simple method will be useful platform technology for the development of cell chip, cell based assay system, and biochip.
With an attempt to investigate the correlation between the internal pressure distribution of slit nozzle and the thickness uniformity of slot-coated thin films, we have performed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of slit nozzles and slot coating of high-viscosity (4,800 cPs) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a gantry slot-die coater. We have calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) to quantify the pressure and velocity distributions inside the slit nozzle and the thickness non-uniformity of slot-coated PDMS films. The pressure distribution inside the cavity and the velocity distribution at the outlet are analyzed by varying the shim thickness and flow rate. We have shown that the cavity pressure uniformity and film thickness uniformity are enhanced by reducing the shim thickness. It is addressed that the CV value of the cavity pressure that can ensure the thickness non-uniformity of less than 5% is equal to and less than 1%, which is achievable with the shim thickness of 150 ㎛. It is also found that as the flow rate increases, the average cavity pressure is increased with the CV value of the pressure unchanged and the maximum coating speed is increased. As the shim thickness is reduced, however, the maximum coating speed and flow rate decrease. The highly uniform PDMS films shows the tensile strain as high as 180%, which can be used as a stretchable substrate.

Tribological behaviors of the hard film on soft substrate system were explored using the hard thin film of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated the soft polymer of polydimethysiloxane (PDMS). A DLC film with the Young's modulus of 100 GPa was coated on PDMS substrate with Young's modulus of 10 MPa using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The deposition time was varied from 10 sec to 10 min, resulting in nanoscale roughness of wrinkle patterns with the thickness of 20 nm to 510 nm, respectively, at a bias voltage of $400\;V_b$, working pressure 10 mTorr. Nanoscale wrinkle patterns with 20-100 nm in width and 10-30 nm height were formed on DLC coating due to the residual stress in compression and difference in Young's modulus. Nanoscale roughness effect on tribological behaviors was observed by performing a tribo-experiment using the ball-on-disk type tribometer with a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter at the sliding speed of 220 rpm, normal load of 1N and 25% humidity at ambient temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. Friction force were measured with respect to thickness change of coated DLC thin film on PDMS. It was found that with increases the thickness of DLC coating on PDMS, the coefficient of friction decreased by comparison to that of the uncoated PDMS. The wear tracks before and after tribo-test were analyzed using SEM and AFM.
Enhancement of the surface hydrophobicity of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin films deposited on substrates covered with titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanospheres was studied. First, a low-temperature solution-phase method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surface capping agent and a water/dimethylformamide (DMF) mixture as the reaction medium was used to synthesize monodisperse $TiO_2$ nanospheres. It was possible to easily control hydrolysis rate of the Ti-precursors and the size of the synthesized nanospheres by varying the amount of PVP and the volume ratio of the solvent mixture. Spray coating of the synthesized $TiO_2$ nanospheres under the PDMS film increased the water contact angle of the film surface to $150.3^{\circ}$. This simple treatment can modify the surface morphology at a nanometer scale without any long or complicated nanoprocess; hence, the surface enters the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter regime.

The piezoelectric composite film of ferroelectric PZT ceramic ($PbZr_xTi_{1-x}O_3$) and polymer (PDMS, Polydimethylsiloxane) was prepared to improve the flexibility of piezoelectric material. The bar coating method was applied to fabricate flexible nanocomposite film with large surface area by low cost process. In the case of using metal electrode on the composite film, although there is no problem by bending process, the electrode is usually broken away from the film by stretching process. However, the well-attached, flexible CNT electrode on PZT/PDMS film improved flexibility, especially stretchability. PZT particles was usually settled down into polymer matrix due to gravity of the weighty particle, so to improve the dispersion of PZT powder in polymer matrix, small amount of additives (CNT powder, Carbon nanotube powder) was physically mixed with the matrix. By stretching the film, an output voltage of PZT(70 wt%)/PDMS with CNT (0.5 wt%) was measured.
Composite membranes were prepared for membrane/cold condensation process for recovery of unreacted olefin monomer from the polyolefin polymerization process by solution coating and plasma polymerization processes. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) solution was coated on polysulfone (PSF) support and increase of prepolymer content in solution made more dense membrane structure to result in the increase of separation factor while absolute flux decreased. Permeation of organic materials through the composite membranes follows the sorption and diffusion mechanism, which brought about the results that separation factor increased with critical temperature of the organic materials, and that flux increased with the increase of the molar volume. Crosslinking period affected the permeation characteristics. Other types of composite membranes were fabricated by plasma polymerization of siloxane materials on polypropylene (PP) and PSF supports. PP was tested as a support for composite membranes, which had not been used so far in solution coating process, and plasma polymerization made the composite membranes equivalent performances to those of membranes prepared by solution coating process.
We have fabricated silver nanowire (AgNW) films as a stretchable and transparent electrode on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates using a spray coater. Inherently, they show poor surface roughness and stretchability. To tackle it, we have employed a conductive polymer, poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : Poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT : PSS). PEDTO : PSS solution is mixed with AgNWs or spin-coated on the AgNW film. Compared with AgNW film only, PEDOT : PSS film only, and polymer-mixed AgNW films, the AgNW/polymer bilayer films exhibit much better surface roughness and stretchability. It is found that spray-coating of AgNWs on uncured PDMS and spin-coating of PEDOT : PSS solution on the AgNW films enhance the surface roughness of electrodes. Such a bilayer structure also provides a stable resistance under tensile strain due to the fact that each layer acts as a detour route for carriers. With this structure, we have obtained the peak-to-peak roughness ($R_{pv}$) as low as 76.8nm and a moderate increase of sheet resistance (from $10{\Omega}/{\Box}$ under 0% strain to $30{\Omega}/{\Box}$ under 40% strain).

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can be deposited on various substrates using chemical vapor deposition process, which results in the formation of PDMS thin films with thickness below 5 nm. PDMS layers can be evenly deposited on surfaces of nanoparticles composed of various chemical compositions such as $SiO_2$, $TiO_2$, ZnO, C, Ni, and NiO, and the PDMS-coated surface becomes completely hydrophobic. These hydrophobic layers are highly resistant towards degradation under acidic and basic environments and UV-exposures. Nanoparticles coated with PDMS can be used in various environmental applications: hydrophobic silica nanoparticles can selectively interact with oil from oil/water mixture, suppressing fast diffusion of spill-oil on water and allowing more facile physical separation of spill-oil from the water. Upon heat-treatments of PDMS-coated $TiO_2$ under vacuum conditions, $TiO_2$ surface becomes completely hydrophilic, accompanying formation oxygen vacancies responsible for visible-light absorption. The post-annealed $PDMS-TiO_2$ shows enhanced photocatalytic activity with respect to the bare $TiO_2$ for decomposition of organic dyes in water under visible light illumination. We show that the simple PDMS-coating process presented here can be useful in a variety of field of environmental science and technology.
Elastic resistive pressure sensor is fabricated by a direct spray coating of silver nanowires (AgNWs) on uncured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and an additional coating of a conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). To improve the sensitive and stability, we have fabricated sandwich-structured AgNW/polymer sensor where two AgNW/polymer-coated PDMS films are laminated with the conducting surfaces contacted by pressure lamination. It shows a resistance decrease upon loading due to the formation of dense network of AgNWs. It is demonstrated that the sandwich-structured AgNW/polymer sensor exhibits very high sensitivity ($2.59kPa^{-1}$) and gauge factor (37.8) in the low pressure regime. It can also detect a subtle placement and removal of a weight as low as 3.4 mg, the corresponding pressure of which is about 5.4 Pa. It is shown that the protrusion of AgNWs from PDMS is suppressed substantially by the over-coated PEDOT:PSS layer, thereby reducing hysteresis and rendering the sensor more stable.
Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have recently been in the spotlight for their applicability in point-of-care diagnostics and environmental material detection. This study presents a double-sided printing method for fabricating 3D-μPADs, providing simple and cost effective metal ion detection. The design of the 3D-μPAD was made into an acryl stamp by laser cutting and then coating it with a thin layer of PDMS using the spin-coating method. This fabricated stamp was used to form the 3D structure of the hydrophobic barrier through a double-sided contact printing method. The fabrication of the 3D hydrophobic barrier within a single sheet was optimized by controlling the spin-coating rate, reagent ratio and contacting time. The optimal conditions were found by analyzing the area change of the PDMS hydrophobic barrier and hydrophilic channel using ink with chromatography paper. Using the fabricated 3D-μPAD under optimized conditions, Ni2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and pH were detected at different concentrations and displayed with color intensity in grayscale for quantitative analysis using ImageJ. This study demonstrated that a 3D-μPAD biosensor can be applied to detect metal ions without special analysis equipment. This 3D-μPAD provides a highly portable and rapid on-site monitoring platform for detecting multiple heavy metal ions with extremely high repeatability, which is useful for resource-limited areas and developing countries.
