It is necessary to convert butene-2 into butene-1 with higher added-values through positional isomerization. In this study, hydro-isomerization of butene-2 with hydrogen over Pd/alumina catalysts was investigated in a fixed bed reactor. The yield of butene-1 over Ld-265 catalyst was higher than that over other catalysts. The yield of butene-1 was highest (5.3%) under the conditions of reaction temperature of $75^{\circ}C$, reaction pressure of 150 psig, 2-butene flow rate of 48 cc/h and hydrogen flow rate of 3 cc/min. We conducted simulation for the process composed of a hydro-isomerization reactor and a distillation tower. In the case of 78% of tray efficiency, we obtained over 99% pure butene-1 through a distillation tower with 171 steps (R=120).
We present a novel electrochemical method to fabricate a single Pd nanowire based on direct current assisted dielectropheresis (DEP) process between two predefined metal electrodes. The electrochemical methods was investigated as functions of frequency and voltage for optimal growth conditions of Pd nanowire. The synthesized Pd nanowire have a good resistance of $1\;k{\Omega}$, diameters of several hundred nanometers on average and lengths of $8\;{\mu}m$. Finally, the single Pd nanowire was capable of detecting hydrogen in the concentration range from 100 to 2500 ppm with high sensitivity and response time, thus demonstrating its suitability for use as a hydrogen sensor.
A highly interferent-resistive membrane, poly-5-amino-1-naphthol (poly-5A1N), underlied beneath enzymeembedded poly-1,3-phenylendiamine (poly-m-PD) network for miniturized continuous monitoring glucose sensors. The enzyme layer was prepared from a mixed solution of glucose oxidase (GOx) and m-PD monomer by simple electrolysis. The mass change of poly-5A1N was monitored by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ and the corresponding thickness was measured. Successive electropolymerization of poly-5A1N and poly-m-PD create a several tens nm-thick bilayer showing excellent selectivity for $H_2O_2$ and low activity loss of immobilized enzymes.

The electrode kinetic parameters at the Pd/0.5 M LiOH electrolyte interface have been qualitatively studied using the phase-shift method. The phase shift $(\phi)$ depends on both the cathode potential (E>0) and frequency (f), and $\theta$ is inversely proportional to the fractional surface coverage $\theta$. At an intermediate frequency (10 Hz), the phase-shift profile $(\phi\;vs.\;E)$ can be related to the fractional surface coverage $(\theta\;vs.\;E)$. The phase-shift method can be used to estimate or plot the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The rate (r) of change of the free energy of adsorption with $({\theta})$ is 22.3 kJ/mol. The equilibrium constant (K) for adsorption and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{\theta})$ of the adsorbed hydrogen atom $(H_{ads})$ are $3.7\times10^{-3}{\Delta}G_{\theta}>-8.4kJ/mol$, respectively. For 1$0.38>\theta>0$, the energy liberation or the exothermic reaction for hydrogen adsorption at the Pd cathode can be occurred. The electrode kinetic parameters $(r,\;K,\;{\Delta}G_{\theta}$ depend on the fractional surface coverage $({\theta})$ or the phase shift $(\phi)$.
Salsolinol (SAL), a compound derived from dopamine metabolism, is the most probable neurotoxin involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we investigated the modification and inactivation of human ceruloplasmin (hCP) induced by SAL. Incubation of hCP with SAL increased the protein aggregation and enzyme inactivation in a dose-dependent manner. Reactive oxygen species scavengers and copper chelators inhibited the SAL-mediated hCP modification and inactivation. The formation of dityrosine was detected in SAL-mediated hCP aggregates. Amino acid analysis post the exposure of hCP to SAL revealed that aspartate, histidine, lysine, threonine and tyrosine residues were particularly sensitive. Since hCP is a major copper transport protein, oxidative damage of hCP by SAL may induce perturbation of the copper transport system, which subsequently leads to deleterious conditions in cells. This study of the mechanism by which ceruloplasmin is modified by salsolinol may provide an explanation for the deterioration of organs under neurodegenerative disorders such as PD. Human embryonic stem (hES) cells can be induced to differentiate into tyrosine hydroxylase expressing (TH+) cells that may serve as an alternative for cell replacement therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). To examine in vitro differentiation of hES (MB03, registered in NIH) cells into TH+ cells, hES cells were induced to differentiate according to the 4-/4+ protocol using retinoic acid (RA), ascorbic acid (AA), and/or lithium chloride (LiCl) followed by culture in N2 medium for 14 days, during which time the differentiation occurs. Immunocytochemical stainings of the cells revealed that approximately 21.1% of cells treated with RA plus AA expressed TH protein that is higher than the ratio of TH+ cells seen in any other treatment groups (RA, RA+LiCl or RA+AA+LiCl). In order to see the differentiation pattern in vivo and the ability of in vitro differentiation-induced cells in easing symptomatic motor function of PD animal model, cells (2 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ cells/2${mu}ell$) undergone 4-/4+ protocol using RA plus AA without any further treatment were transplanted into unilateral striatum of MPTP-lesioned PD animal model (C57BL/6). Following the surgery, motor behavior of the animals was examined by measuring the retention time on an accelerating rotar-rod far next 10 weeks. No significant differences in retention time of the animals were noticed until 2 weeks post-graft; however, it increased markedly at 6 weeks and 10 weeks time point after the surgery. Immunohistochemical studies confirmed that a reasonable number of TH+ cells were found at the graft site as well as other remote sites, showing the migrating nature of embryonic stem cells. These results suggest that in viかo differentiated hES cells relieve symptomatic motor behavior of PD animal model and should be considered as a promising alternative for the treatment of PD.

This study is concerned with the oxidation of carbon monoxide on platinum and platinum-palladium catalysts. Catalysts were made by the impregnation method and flow reactor was used in the catalytic reaction. As for the mixed gases, carbon monoxide concentration varied from 1 to 4% and that of oxygen from 1 to 4%. $N_2$ was used as carrier gas and GHSV varied from 24, 000 $h^{-1} to 60, h^{-1}$. The temperature range was from 200 to $600^\circ$C. It was also taken into consideration that the heat and mass transfer resistance of our catalysts was negligible in the study. Experimental results showed that platinum-palladium catalyst was about 1.5-3.9% superior to platinum catalyst in conversion yield. When we used platinum-palladium catalyst, we observed that carbon monoxide oxidation was found to be 1 st order with respect to carbon monoxide concentration. Activation energy of the catalyst was 23.5 kcal/mol.

We studied whether kinase pathways are involved in TCDD-induced gene expression by treating specific kinase inhibitors ncluding MEK1 inhibitor PD98059, p38 inhibitor SB202190, PI-3 kinase inhibitor Wortmannin or LY294002 or protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor Genestein and then tested the effects of individual inhibitors on TCDD-induced gene expression of cytochromelAl gene (CYPlAl). Our results show that PD98059, MEK-1 inhibitor reduces dioxin-inducible transcription of CYPlAl. p44/p42MAPK, that is phosphorylated by Mek-1, are phosphorlylated by treatment of TCDD, peaking at lnM, 30min treatments. Overexpressions of p44/p42 MAPK dominant negative mutants suppress dioxin dependent transcription of DRE-driven reporter gene in a dose-dependent manner. Our results demonstrate that p44/p42 MAPK is essential for transcriptional activity of AHR/ARNT heterodimer. We found that PD98059 dose-dependently blocks TCDD-induced DRE binding of the AHR/ARNT heterodimer, thereby it reduces TCDD-induced gene expression. Therefore, our results indicate that Mek-1/p44/p42 MAPK pathway is involved in TCDD-induced gene expression, [This study was supported by a grant from Korean Research Foundation Grant (X01529)to H.
