  • Abstract- In this paper, a new Partial Discharge (PD) detection using Pockels cell was proposed and considerable apparent chaotic characteristics were discussed. For this purpose, PD was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detecte by optical measuring system using Pockels cell, based on Mach-Zehner interferometer, consisting of He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, 50/50 beam splitter and photo detector. In addition, the presence of chaos of the PD signals has been investigated by examining their means of qualitative and quantitative information. For the former, return map and 3-dimensional strange attractor have been drawn in order to investigate the presence of chaotic characteristics relevant to PD signals, detected through CT and Peckels sensor respectively, in the normalized time series. The presence of strange attractor indicates the existence of fractal structures in it's phase space. For the latter, several dimension values of strange attractor were verified sequentially. Throughout this paper, it is likely that the chaotic characteristics regarding the PD signals under air are verified.

A qualitative analysis was carried out by drawing Return map for the normalized time series of the detected PD signals. The results are as follows:(a) Fixed points, between 0.7 and 1.0, are appeared clearly in the right upper area of the return map as the increase in the number of obtained data.(b) Considerable periodicity have been remarked even though exact period and length can not be determined.(c) The self-similarity can be also observed inasmuch as the late paths do not follow the previous ones. Accordingly, exact quantitative analysis such as embedding dimension, fractal dimension, and Lyapunov exponents should be carried out for deducing the quantitative properties regarding PD phenomena.

  • Partial discharges (PD) have long been recognized as a major contributing factor to catastrophic failures in high-power equipment. As the demand for high voltage direct current (HVDC) facilities continues to rise, the significance of on-line and real-time monitoring of PD becomes increasingly prominent. In this study, we have designed, fabricated, and characterized a highly sensitive and cost-effective PD sensor comprising a pair of copper electrodes with different arc lengths. The key advantage of our sensor is its non-invasive nature, as it can be installed at any location along the entire power cable without requiring structural modifications. In contrast, conventional PD sensors are typically limited to installation at cable terminals or insulation joint boxes, often necessitating invasive alterations. Our PD sensor demonstrates exceptional accuracy in estimating PD location, with a success rate exceeding 95% in the straight sections of the power cable and surpassing 89% in curved sections. These remarkable characteristics indicate its high potential for realtime and on-line detection of PD.

  • The optimal use of sonar systems for detection is a practical problem in a given ocean environment. In order to quantify the mission achievability in general, measure of effectiveness(MOE) is defined for specific missions. In this paper, using the specific MOE for detection, which is represented as cumulative detection probability(CDP), an integrated software package named as Optimal Acoustic Search Path Planning(OASPP) is developed. For a given ocean environment and sonar systems, the discrete observations for detection probability(PD) are used to calculate CDP incorporating sonar and environmental parameters. Also, counter-detection probability is considered for vulnerability analysis for a given scenario. Through modeling and simulation for a simple case for which an intuitive solution is known, the developed code is verified.

  • Since the obstacles and mines are of the risk factors for operating ships and submarines, the active sonar system is inevitably used to avoid the hazards in ocean environment. In this paper, modeling and simulation algorithm is used for active sonar systemto quantify the measure of mission achievability, which is known as Measure of Effectiveness(MOE), specifically for detection in this study. MOE for detection is directly formulated as a Cumulative Detection Probability(CDP) calculated from Probability of Detection(PD) in range and azimuth. The detection probability is calculated from Transmission Loss(TL) and the sonar parameters such asDirectivity Index (DI) calculated from the shape of transmitted and received array, steered beam patterns, and Reverberation Level (RL). The developed code is applied to demonstrating its applicability.

  • $TiO_2$ oxide semiconductor is being widely studied in various applications such as photocatalyst and photosensor. Pd/$TiO_2$ gas sensor is mainly used to detect $H_2$, CO and ethanol. This study focus on increasing hydrogen detection ability of Pd/$TiO_2$ in room temperature through Al-doping. Pd/$TiO_2$ was fabricated by the hydrothermal method. Contacting to Aluminum (Al) foil led to Al doping effect in Pd/$TiO_2$ by thermal diffusion and enhanced hydrogen sensing response. $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were sized at ~30 nm of diameter from scanning electron microscope (SEM) and maintained anatase crystal structure after Al doping from X-ray diffraction analysis. Presence of Al in $TiO_2$ was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at 73 eV. SEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy measurement also confirmed 2 wt% Al in Pd/$TiO_2$ bulk. The gas sensing test was performed with $O_2$, $N_2$ and $H_2$ gas ambient. Pd/Al-doped $TiO_2$ did not response $O_2$ and $N_2$ gas in vacuum except $H_2$. Finally, the normalized resistance ratio ($R_{H2on}/R_{H2off}$) of Pd/Al-doped $TiO_2$ increases about 80% compared to Pd/$TiO_2$.

  • Partial Discharge(PD) pulses propagate in gas insulated substation(GIS) with rise time shorter than one nanosecond. Therefore, Ultra high frequency(UHF) couplers which have ultra wide band(UWB) characteristics from hundreds of MHz to several GHz are desirable for the detection of the PB pulses in GIS. In this paper, the authors proposed a log-periodic antenna for GIS PD detection. Various parameters of the coupler such as frequency bandwidth, coupler gain, radiation pattern, coupler geometry were considered through the simulations and the experiments together.

  • This paper presents a diagnostic technique using ultrasonic for operating power transformer. Two methods are used as a base for detecting a partial discharge. One is a analysis of PD trend using counted ultrasonic signal, the other is a estimation of PD location source using cross-correlation. In this paper we implement detection equipment of partial discharge in power transformer. The desired system is utilized to two methods for PD detection and operated by graphical user interface(GUI). The results of test showed that the system can be adopted to real power transformer.

  • In this paper, a novel method has been proposed by use of HY-Pockels sensor for the detection of PD in GITR(Gas Insulated Transformer) in order to improve reliability and to overcome the shortcomings of other techniques which are currently employed. For this work, different types of the test specimen, simulating the winding of the real GITR, have been designed and fabricated to generate the PD. And then, the detection of PD has been realized by conventional methods according to IEC 270 and also the proposed novel sensor as well. Afterwards, their results are well compared to understand the correlation between the nature of the defects in the winding and their PD pattern.

  • In this work, it is proposed new PD(partial discharge) detection technique using electro-optic effect, for which partial discharges generated from needle-plane electrode in air were detected through optical measuring system by use of $LiNbO3_3$ electro-optic crystal. As a result, it is noticed that PD measurable phase intervals are limited by the asymmetrical D-E hysteresis loop of the crystal with defects and half-wave voltage. However, both number of measured PD pulses and their amplitude were increased with applied voltage, which likely implies that it is possible to detect PD through newly proposed electro-optic method.
