This study was performed to evaluate the PCBs-containing wastes using official test method. Ninety samples of transformer oil and various solid waste were collected to assess the analytical results. In the analysis of PCBs-containing wastes, the PCBs levels were detected in the range of 7.6 mg/kg to 23.8 mg/kg for transformer oils, $0.02\sim0.54\;{\mu}g/100cm^2$ for plat solid wastes, and 0.01~0.071 mg/kg for amorphous solid waste. In the cupper wire waste of the transformer with oil concentration level of 23 mg/kg, the analytical result exceed PCBs regulation level of 0.04 mg/kg. The new proposed analytical method for PCBs containing waste can be forced to effective management of the wastes.

The study on the development of rapid analytical method of PCBs containing waste was performed by considering the extraction, column cleanup process, analytical condition and so on. In the established method, new sample clean-up procedure, new quantification peaks and temperature program were introduced. Method detection limit of the method was 0.5 mg/L, and the method could save the total run time to 2/3, therefore save the analysis cost, The new rapid analytical method of transformer oil was suggested to the waste official test method.

This study was investigated both the Korean official soil test method and the international various methods for PCBs in soil sample. The analytical guideline of PCBs in contaminated soil were proposed based on the official soil test methods by discussing the extraction, column cleanup, instrumental conditions, quantification methods of peak matching and individual isomers. The total 28 soil samples were selected by consideration of PCBs-contamination, land use etc., and then analyzed using gas chromatography/electron capture detection (GC/ECD) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(GC/MS). In this study, the PCBs were not detected as peak matching method using GC/ECD, but PCBs detected $0.002{\sim}0.487{\mu}g/kg$ using GC/MS in background concentrations.

An analytical method was investigated for the meaiiurement of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) concentrations in air samples. Procedures required for column chromatographic clean up. silicagel (stage I) and gel permeation chromatography (stage II), were discussed. Identification and quantification of PCBs and OCPs were performed using a combination of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry/ selected ion monitoring. Recovery tests calculated from six samples are 68∼137% for PCBs and 58∼130% for OCPs except for endrin aldehyde. Instrumental detection limits determined for the PCBs and OCPs varied from 0.05 to 0.18 pg/m3 and from 0.71 to 16.82 pg/㎥, respectively. The method has been applied to the analysis of air samples collected at Ansung city, Kyonggi province, Korea. This method may serve as a screening protocol for the simultaneous determination of PCBs and OCPs in air.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were commercially produced as complex mixtures beginning in 1929. The PCBs manufactured commercially are known by a variety of trade names including; Aroclor (USA), Phenoclor (France), Kaneclor (Japan), Sovol (USSR) and so on. PCBs are a class of 209 congeners that were widely used in a wide variety of applications, including dielectric fluid in transformers and large capacitors; heat transfer fluids; hydraulic fluids; lubricating and cutting oils; and as additives in pesticides, paints, adhesives, sealants, and plastics. The quantification methods of peak matching and coefficient comparison were compared using the Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254, 1260 standards. Also, six transformer oils were analyzed as a main source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) emission into the environment. The transformer oils contained the pure and mixed of Aroclor 1242, Aroclor 1254, and Aroclor 1260. The analytical results using two quantification methods showed the little difference between the measured results.

The treatment efficiency of PCBs containing wastes has been investigated. The samples treated by electron beam and de-chlorination method were analyzed to verify the byproducts before treatment and after treatment. In the treated samples by electron beam irradiation, PCBs were not detected by comparing the peak matching using the Korean official waste test method. On the other hand, PCBs congeners were detected by analyzing individual isotope method using HRGC/HRMS. Most of PCB congeners in waste were decomposed to 3-chlorobiphenyls, lower chlorinated congener produced during the treatment of electron beam. In the chemical dechlorination treatment, it was found that the concentrations of PCBs in treated samples were lower than those of regulation criteria in Waste & POPs management law and the after treatment concentration were satisfied to the regulation criteria. Also, dioxins were not observed after the physio-chemical treatment processes of PCBs containing wastes.

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs) in samples collected from 43 kindss of water, 35 kinds of soil and 11 kinds of sediment in various place of Korea have been monitored using GC/MS/SIM analytical method. In our investigation, mean recoveries were $83.8{\pm}10.4%$ for water, $94.9{\pm}12.2%$ for soil and sediment samples and $80.2{\pm}8.7%$ for the spiked $^{13}C{_{12}}$-PCBs. Detection limits of PCBs for water, soil and sediment samples are 0.01 ng/ml and 0.05 ng/g. PCB congeners in water samples were not detected within quantitation limit, but trace amounts were detected in most of soil and sediment samples. The contamination level of PCBs in Korea was evaluated to be lower than in advanced countries like USA, Europe and Japan.

This study was performed to improve the analytical methods and re-establish the regulatory standard of PCBs-containing solid wastes for sufficient management in which has been concerned internationally. To do this, the sampling, pre-treatment and quantification methods which were used in USA and Japan were discussed. It was thought properly that new standard of PCBs-containing solid wastes was established through correlation with PCBs concentration of transformer oil. The surface wipe sampling was selected in the nonporous materials and cutting sampling in the porous materials. In the absence of transformer oils, electrical equipment is PCB-contaminated if it has PCBs at ${\geq}0.4{\mu}g/100cm^2$ as measured by a wipe test of a nonporous surface and if it has at 0.04 mg/L as measured by cutting test of a porous material. Also, new analytical methods for PCBs containing solid waste were proposed.
This study was performed to search for useful separation properties and elution orders of three GC columns (DB-1, DB-5MS, SPB-Octyl) for 209 PCBs congeners using M-1668A-0.01X-SET of the AccuStandard Inc.. In addition, to confirm the quantitative peak in peak pattern method, the IUPAC Nos. of PCBs congener peaks were identified with 4 Aroclor standards (Aroclor-1242, 1248, 1254 and 1260). The separation property of dioxin-like PCBs congeners by four columns (DB-1, DB-5MS, SP-2331 and SPB-Octyl) was excellent in SP-2331. DB-1 and SPB-Octyl columns are necessary to use with a column of other types.

The analytical method of 14 kinds of coplanar - PCBs was established and applied the soil sample. The three kinds of extraction solvents (toluene, acetone: n-hexane, dichloromethane) were selected to apply the soil sample. The silica gel, florisil and alumina column cleanup also performed to compare the elution recovery. The average recovery of selected solvents in soil A, B and C was surveyed the 84.25%, 56.09% and 44.69% for toluene, 52.56%, 81.42% and 58.53% for acetone : n - hexane and 55.94%, 71.33% and 61.05% for dichloromethane. The average recovery is represented 49.99% for silica gel (n - hexane 100 mL), 69.65% for florisil (6% ether/n - hexane 100 mL), and 65.23% for alumina (2% DCM : n - hexane 100 mL, 50% DCM: n-hexane 150 mL). In silica gel (n - hexane) and florisil (6% ether : n - hexane) cleanup, the 14 kinds of coplanar PCBs eluted until 40 mL. In the silica gel and florisil columns cleanup, the amounts of elution solvent can be reduced from these results, but the researcher has to confirm the elution amounts before performing the experiments. In alumina cleanup process, the result was obtained to the 100 mL of elution solvents (2% DCM: n-hexane 100 mL and 50% DCM: n-hexane 40 mL), therefore the change of elution solvent is necessary to develop the simple procedure.
