  • In this paper, we propose an emotion recognition using static and dynamic facial images to effectively design human interface. The proposed method is constructed by HMM(Hidden Markov Model), PCA(Principal Component) and wavelet transform. Facial database consists of six basic human emotions including happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and dislike which have been known as common emotions regardless of nation and culture. Emotion recognition in the static images is performed by using the discrete wavelet. Here, the feature vectors are extracted by using PCA. Emotion recognition in the dynamic images is performed by using the wavelet transform and PCA. And then, those are modeled by the HMM. Finally, we obtained better performance result from merging the recognition results for the static images and dynamic images.

  • There are many feature extraction methods for face recognition. We need a new method to overcome the small sample problem that the number of feature variables is larger than the sample size for face image data. The paper considers partial least squares(PLS) as a new dimension reduction technique for feature vector. Principal Component Analysis(PCA), a conventional dimension reduction method, selects the components with maximum variability, irrespective of the class information. So, PCA does not necessarily extract features that are important for the discrimination of classes. PLS, on the other hand, constructs the components so that the correlation between the class variable and themselves is maximized. Therefore PLS components are more predictive than PCA components in classification. The experimental results on Manchester and ORL databases shows that PLS is to be preferred over PCA when classification is the goal and dimension reduction is needed.

  • Object recognition technologies using PCA(principal component analysis) recognize objects by deciding representative features of objects in the model image, extracting feature vectors from objects in a image and measuring the distance between them and object representation. Given frequent recognition problems associated with the use of point-to-point distance approach, this study adopted the k-nearest neighbor technique(class-to-class) in which a group of object models of the same class is used as recognition unit for the images in-putted on a continual input image. However, the robustness of recognition strategies using PCA depends on several factors, including illumination. When scene constancy is not secured due to varying illumination conditions, the learning performance the feature detector can be compromised, undermining the recognition quality. This paper proposes a new PCA recognition in which database of objects can be detected under different illuminations between input images and the model images.

  • In this paper, we propose an enhancement shot change detection method using the neural net and the robust feature selection out of multiple features. The previous shot change detection methods usually used single feature and fixed threshold between consecutive frames. However, contents such as color, shape, background, and texture change simultaneously at shot change points in a video sequence. Therefore, in this paper, we detect the shot changes effectively using robust features, which are supplementary each other, rather than using single feature. In this paper, we use the typical CART (classification and regression tree) of data mining method to select the robust features, and the backpropagation neural net to determine the threshold of the each selected features. And to evaluation the performance of the robust feature selection, we compare the proposed method to the PCA(principal component analysis) method of the typical feature selection. According to the experimental result. it was revealed that the performance of our method had better that than the PCA method.

  • This paper proposes a face recognition method based on modified Otsu's binarization and Hu moment. Proposed method is robust to brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes. As the proposed modified Otsu's binarization computes other thresholds from conventional Otsu's binarization, namely we create two binary images, we can extract higher dimensional feature vector. Here the feature vector has properties of robustness to brightness and contrast changes because the proposed method is based on Otsu's binarization. And our face recognition system is robust to scale, rotation, and translation changes because of using Hu moment. In the perspective of brightness, contrast, scale, rotation, and translation changes, experimental results with Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) database and the AR database showed that average recognition rates of conventional well-known principal component analysis (PCA) are 93.2% and 81.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed method for the same databases has superior performance of the average recognition rates of 93.2% and 81.4%, respectively.

  • In this study, we compare the recognition performance using PCA and RBFNNs for introducing robust face recognition system to pose variations based on pose estimation. proposed face recognition system uses Honda/UCSD database for comparing recognition performance. Honda/UCSD database consists of 20 people, with 5 poses per person for a total of 500 face images. Extracted image consists of 5 poses using Multiple-Space PCA and each pose is performed by using (2D)2PCA for performing pose classification. Linear polynomial function is used as connection weight of RBFNNs Pattern Classifier and parameter coefficient is set by using Particle Swarm Optimization for model optimization. Proposed (2D)2PCA-based face pose classification performs recognition performance with PCA, (2D)2PCA and RBFNNs.

  • We examined the sixteen quantitative characters of Trapa and conducted principal component analysis for T. japonica Flerow and T. bispinosa Roxb. in South Korea. Trapa bispinosa has been recorded as 'Ma-reum (T. japonica Flerow)' in the Korean flora, but this taxon is distinct from T. japonica in terms of width, thickness and upper horns of its nuts. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirms the morphologically distinct status for the two species. We suggest the common name 'Keun-ma-reum' for Trapa bispinosa to the Korean flora.

  • Representation based classification, kernel method and sparse representation have received much attention in the field of face recognition. In this paper, we proposed an improved kernel principal component analysis method based on sparse representation to improve the accuracy and robustness for face recognition. First, the distances between the test sample and all training samples in kernel space are estimated based on collaborative representation. Second, S training samples with the smallest distances are selected, and Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA) is used to extract the features that are exploited for classification. The proposed method implements the sparse representation under ℓ2 regularization and performs feature extraction twice to improve the robustness. Also, we investigate the relationship between the accuracy and the sparseness coefficient, the relationship between the accuracy and the dimensionality respectively. The comparative experiments are conducted on the ORL, the GT and the UMIST face database. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective and robust than several state-of-the-art methods including Sparse Representation based Classification (SRC), Collaborative Representation based Classification (CRC), KCRC and Two Phase Test samples Sparse Representation (TPTSR).

  • The anatomy of Korean diffuse-porous woods, 36 families, 75 genera, 145 species, 215 specimens was described and analyzed. Sixteen wood anatomical characters, habit and phenology factors were determined by simple correlation and principal component analysis. Strong positive correlations were found between vessel element length and fiber length, ray width and ray height, simple pits of fiber wall and paratracheal parenchyma distribution. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) disclose the primitive characteristics and the direction of xylem evolution of Korean diffuse-porous woods. The xylem evolution scenario for Korean dicotyledonous woods is considered to be developed in the direction of decreasing trends of vessel frequency, vessel element length, and length/diameter(L/D) ratio of vessel element but increasing trends of vessel diameter, fiber length/vessel element length(F/V) ratio, libriform wood fibers, simple perforation, and homogeneous ray composition. Increase of vessel diameter and decrease of vessel frequency seem to be related to the improvement of conductive efficiency, and increase of the vessel element length and occurrence of scalariform perforation in vessel element may be related to enhanced of conductive safety. Also the libriform wood fibers and ray features appear to have relationship with mechanical support and nutrient metabolism, respectively.

  • Plasma etching is used in various semiconductor processing steps. In plasma etcher, optical- emission spectroscopy (OES) is widely used for in-situ endpoint detection. However, the sensitivity of OES is decreased if polymer is deposited on viewport or the proportion of exposed area on the wafer is too small. Because of these problems, the object is to investigate the suitability of using plasma impedance monitoring (PIM) and self plasma optical emission spectrocopy (SPOES) with statistical approach for in-situ endpoint detection. The endpoint was determined by impedance signal variation from I-V monitor (VI probe) and optical emission signal from SPOES. However, the signal variation at the endpoint is too weak to determine endpoint when $SiO_2$ and SiNx layers are etched by fluorocarbon on inductive coupled plasma (ICP) etcher, if the proportion of $SiO_2$ and SiNx area on Si wafer are small. Therefore, modified principal component analysis (mPCA) is applied to them for increasing sensitivity. For verifying this method, detected endpoint from impedance monitoring is compared with optical emission spectroscopy.
