  • Purpose : During brain MRI scanning, subject's head motion can adversely affect MRI images. To minimize MR image distortion by head movement, we developed an optical tracking system to detect the 3-D movement of subjects. Materials and Methods: The system consisted of 2 CCD cameras, two infrared illuminators, reflective sphere-type markers, and frame grabber with desktop PC. Using calibration which is the procedure to calculate intrinsic/extrinsic parameters of each camera and triangulation, the system was desiged to detect 3-D coordinates of subject's head movement. We evaluated the accuracy of 3-D position of reflective markers on both test board and the real MRI scans. Results: The stereo system computed the 3-D position of markers accurately for the test board and for the subject with glasses with attached optical reflective marker, required to make regular head motion during MRI scanning. This head motion tracking didn't affect the resulting MR images even in the environment varying magnetic gradient and several RF pulses. Conclusion: This system has an advantage to detect subject's head motion in real-time. Using the developed system, MRI operator is able to determine whether he/she should stop or intervene in MRI acquisition to prevent more image distortions.

  • As the construction sites are far from the construction site offices, the construction workers perform work on the sites with a variety of reference books and materials. This inconvenience may lead to construction accidents, and as such, the demand for mobile app development for simplifying work is increasing. Therefore, in this study, the trends of mobile research and mobile app development, and their application to the construction field were investigated to develop a mobile app that would help construction workers process their work. Based on this, mobile services applicable to construction sites and work process improvement plans were proposed. To apply the proposed work process, the functions of the existing construction project management system were improved, and a mobile app that could be used in both the Android and iOS environments was developed.

The data were collected by questionnaires from Oct. to Nov. in 1997. The number of subjects was 210 OHNs and 176 employers, response rate was 47.1% for OHNs and 23.2% for employers. The SAS PC program was used for the descriptive statistics. The results were as follow: 1. More than three years career was preferred for qualification of OHN by employers and OHNs. OHNs preferred that all instruments and materials should be equipped in each industry, but employers preferred that they should be equipped by OHN. 2. For the limit number of industries and employees per one OHN, employers preferred average 2.25 industries and 307 employees, OHNs preferred average 3.0 industries and 448 employees. Both of them preferred two times visit per week for all day long. 3. OHNs wanted that the local office of Ministry of Labor could act as mediator, but employers preferred direct contact individually. For the average wage, employers preferred 887,000 won per month, but OHNs preferred 1,960,000 won per month. 4. OHNs preferred the Korean Association of Occupational Health Nurse as the recruit agency. Finally, employers and OHNs have the opinions that they can choose this system depending on the condition. There is in need of development of effective strategy for this new system such as manpower development, cost-benefit analysis, establishment of occupational health service standard, advertisement for employers, and government supported project.

  • This research is a byproduct of a project initiated by a major airport in Korea. The airport aimed to enhance airside safety and weighed a few IT options that may strengthen its current safety practices. In order to satisfy requirements unique to the airport and to inherit existing legacy systems, a PCS-based mobile database system was proposed. We first discuss technical aspects of the system as well as design issues in mobile systems before we compare two specific alternatives for transactional service handoff. A simulation study comparing two types of coordination follows before we present a scheme that manages transaction processing and locating service in mobile environments. Finally, we discuss the limitations of the scheme from the perspectives of the airport in question along with other research issues.

  • Today, through developing country's Official Development Assistance (ODA) project, Republic of Korea is giving help in establishing communication networks, furnishing PCs and etc, as a help of information base expansion. And to resolve digital divide between countries, Republic of Korea's IT service group dispatch business has also significantly contributed to enhance information application level of developing countries. The conclusion and suggestion of this study is as follow. It is obvious that utilization of information can be affected by capability improvement of developing country's informatization level. However, developing informatization strategy level and environment in long term wise will cause greater influence than to raise immediate informatization base level. Overall, settlement of long term digital divide seems possible when we elevate developing countries' informatization strategy level and environment.

  • The main purpose of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate a weight control program for overweight elementary school children The results of our previous study in 1996 Identified overweight as one of several health problems among elementary school children in urban areas The research method utilized was a quasi experimental design using one group in a pre and post test comparison The sample consisted of 198 children from 3 elementary schools in Kyung-gi Province who were 20% over the ideal weight for their height Height and weight were measured and a BMI score was calculated at the beginning of the program and monthly thereafter. The program had three components: physical exercise, counseling of children, and health education of children, parents, and teachers. The program lasted from March, 1997 to November, 1997. The data were analyzed using an SAS PC statistical package. The results indicate that the overweight children in two elementary schools had statistically Significant changes in their BMI score after the program while those in one school id not. When the process notes were reviewed it was Identified that the school which showed little change averaged less physical exercise, and less parent and teacher participation in the program In conclusion, a school based weight control program is an effective way to manage and prevent obesity for overweight elementary school children It is suggested that a school wide exercise program may be better accepted by overweight children than a program specifically designed for overweight children only. One of the most important factors which determine the successful outcome of any health promotion project in school is the enthusiasm and cooperation of the principal and school health nurse.

  • The docking and in silico ligand screening procedures can select small sets of lead -like candidates from large libraries of either commercially or synthetically available compounds; however, the vast number of such molecules make the potential size of this task enormous. To accelerate the discovery of drugs to inhibit several targets, we have exploited massively distributed computing to screen compound libraries virtually. The Korea@HOME project was launched in Feb. 2002, and one year later, more than 1200 PC's have been recruited. This has created a 31 -gigaflop machine that has already provided more than 1400 hours of CPU time. It has all owed databases of millions of compounds to be screened against protein targets in a matter of days. Now, the virtual screening software suitable for distributed environments is developed by BMD. It has been evaluated in terms of the accuracy of the scoring function and the search algorithm for the correct binding mode.
